Very nice explanation. I'm doing the same since long time as music is my passion. And now I am able to recognize many raag. I have now a list of hundreds of songs based on different raag. With best regards from Pakistan.
I am from Maldives, I've always loved Indian songs without having much awareness of the ornamentations and the beauty of it but when I first heard the use and details of Gamakas and Harkats and the breathtaking Instruments like Sitar I was like gone to another world. And this helped me making great music and this is the thing what I am inspired most. Melodies and feelings expressing the highest level of human emotions Pranam🙏
She is so alive .... so beautiful... I am learning shastriya ..( indian classical Hindustani version) ... and I can't get enough of it ...lots of practice but all pleasure.
The most enlightening and entertaining Ted talk I have ever heard ...on almost every topic I get a feeling I already knew significant part of it or my understanding is contradictory(which I hold on to).....BUT here it’s like going from ZERO to a few notches up in terms of my knowledge about music or at least the broad ideas about the nature of music. Thank You 🙏🏻
This is such a fantastic description... What a beautiful way to describe Indian music... I was a student of Indian classical music till I got married and shifted to Germany... I still try to listen to it but I can no longer sing... This has been a beautiful journey back to the roots... The magic of Raags... The beauty of the combination of notes... I am in awe...
DHANASHREE, U R GR8..! U HV DONE WHT NO ONE ELSE HAS...ANALYSED AND SIMPLIFIED THE 'MISTRY' BEHIND INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC..GOD BLESS..MAY UR TALENTS SHINE FOR THE WORLD TO APPRECIATE WHAT MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT.. U MADE MY DAY, WEEK AND YEARS...!
excellent perspectives on music from the frame of reference of indian music. i'm listening to someone speak a global language with the seven notes, which transform themsleves into seven wonders, spread around the world!
Dhanashree you are an amazing amazing musician, I just happened to stumble upon this video and I am totally blown away with the beauty of your voice As far as i am concerned G-D has kissed your vocal chords ,in a another life i would be honored to have had the dust of your muscial wisdom yo, you are truly a special woman
Dhanashree Pandit-Rai, my former teacher, breaking it down for everyone, clear as day. Wonderful interesting and illuminating instruction. A great video to help people understand this basic conceptual difference between Indian and other musics. Great to hear her beautiful voice too!
Wow....I loved this workshop! I can't believe I get it.....I have a frog or toads's capability of understanding music. Only thing I can say is that I know what I like For eg. I absolutely love Vande Mataram AND I loved the song which used to come on Doordarshan with all the classical singers singing the patriotic song....and that was also Raag Desh. So I know I love Raag Desh. I have realised that there are 100s of examples like this in my case. I think it's crucial for us to know WHY we like something when it comes to music. It shortens the selection process when you want to listen to something really good that appeals to you. Thank you, thank you....I finally get it.
What a wonderful talk. Loved it. More so because you chose chose to appreciate non Indian music and not denigrate. That's what makes you special and unique. Do keep up the good work. I wasn't aware.....but you and I were almost neighbours......on setalvad Road.....we lived in Ramkrishna Nivas 60 years ago.
That Norwegian wood example I Always knew from western music perspective that based on Mixolydian & Dorian mode( for some portion) never thought about Bageshree. Amazing explanation from Dhanashree. It's interesting to see how these ragas blends with popular music still unknown to people.
it was great hearing you dhanashree it is a great welcome to youngsters to understand these nuances! iam a lover of all music esp indian classical!i truely enjoyed your talk!
As a jazz musician and student of Indian raag, it was truly refreshing to hear this treatise. Similar to my study of yoga, I feel I'm dipping my toes into an ocean. I am trying to bring some of the melodies my mom used to sing (while making rotis during my childhood) into my jazz music. The challenge is in creating the supporting chords for the rhythm section. For example in Raag Bhairo, the Dha-komal leads to half-diminished-7 chords.
Dhanashree!! I LOVE THIS!!! So wonderful to hear you teach us and offer a perspective much needed of what Western ears learn when opening minds and ears to Indian music and all world music. You changed my view of music when I studied with you years ago! Miss you and love you!
I almost accidentally came to this while searching for 'zamzama' and felt very happy. I congratulate you for such a brilliant, crisp and comprehensive encapsulation of the basics of Indian classical music that will help listeners in relating to it. I suggest you may also l include some songs of K L Saigal to demonstrate Rags and the embellishment of notes for enhancing the expression contained in the renderings. I wish our classical musicians also see their music in the larger perspective.
Hey Dhana, finally got down to watching it. you know my preference for music but I thoroughly loved this. Love the way you draw the similarities. will listen to my next raag with Ajay with a bit more patience. HA! All the best
What a performance: down to earth, clear, simple language, light-hearted and congenial, but always thought-provoking and profound. Magical, really. Made me kick myself for not taking more of an interest in Indian music all these years. Now maybe I will and will also take some tips from you. Wish I had been there that night. I've wondered what I would speak about, if I was ever asked to do something like this. Whatever it is, if I can be half as engaging as you were, I'll be satisfied. dilip
i did this in 2004 with various genres scales . unfortunately only 105 people got to hear it. I do not have the kind of exposure or fame . I appreciate the approach. I wish more people heard mine too :(

Hi Dhanashree, A fantastic demonstration and presentation indeed! You have compressed so much of educative value in a short time! Next time you could perhaps make a passing ref to Carnatic music too as a part of the Indian system. Cheers! vs gopal
