That smile Mona gives Max as she dies, coupled with the ominous sound effect in the background as the other panels fade away to show that she'd just finished bleeding out, that shit fuelled my nightmares for months till I came back and beat DOA mode. I was never happier to beat a game than the moment I saw Max and Mona holding each other, alive.

@@maverickslastoddworld6476Mona dying is a much better fit thematically than having Her survive,for example Max mentioned at the end of the game that confronting the past is "Like kissing the lips of your dead love, darkness waiting in the hole of Her mouth" also even the official Wikipedia page for Max Payne has Mona listed as deceased, that is Max's "curse" throughout the Franchise, He always gets to live, but can NEVER have a truly happy ending

This game was more than a movie, more than any other games during that time.. wow over 10 years passed. Such a level of depth and story telling. Above all the main BGM is so Divine and touching. Hearty thanks to the entire team. You made everyone feel the pain of Mr.Payne.

Probably one of the most tragic and sad endings to any video game. At least Max Payne 1 had a silver lining at the end and in Max Payne 3 he found some sense of peace. In this game everything goes to shit
Actually. In this game max finally accepts everything that happened and moves on with his life. Until mp3 retconned it.
Play it on "Dead on Arrival" mode and you'll see a different ending ;)

In my entire life playing video games, this was the ONLY game I didn't feel any satisfaction in finishing it, after killing Vlad, after finishing watching the graphic novels, getting the credits up... My mind and my body was a terrible feeling of emptiness, sadness, melancholy, desolation... as if I were Max himself, as if Mona had just died in my arms, as if I myself were reliving the tragedy of my own wife and my little baby. No other game has given me such a thing, and it's precisely this experience that makes Max Payne 2 a masterpiece, one of the best games ever made. Amazing how reviewing this ending here, all that horrible feeling we feel when completing the game for the first time, just comes up unexpectedly.

Playing max Payne 3 I felt like i forgot max payne 2! After watching this I instantly remembered the entire story line!! Good video man!!
I know a man who has nothing left to lose. He cant be killed, and he can dodge bullets. The only point of his life is to live through the pain.
Watching this legit made me tear up I remember buying this and many nights spent playing this hard to believe it's been almost 18 years.

"Now, like all my loves, she was mine forever", "in the act of seeing, I am reborn" & "I had a dream of my wife, she was dead, but it was alright".. all simple and kind of melodramatic lines that hit incredibly hard emotionally given the context of the two games. max is one of the most tragic anti heroes in any form of media, and this ending was absolutely perfect. Going through tragic loss once again didn't break him, but reawakened him, Mona showed him he could still love and care about something other than vengeance. Beautiful game series, shame that Max Payne 3 kind of wiped it's ass with the series' trademark poetic writing and emotional complexity, that's rockstar for you! (They make the most overrated games in the industry from a story standpoint IMO). MP3 had the best gameplay of the 3 for sure, but other than that games intro and ending cutscenes (which I'll admit give some nice close to Max's journey), the story is a MASSIVE downgrade from the Remedy days.
Max payne 2 might be the greatest game ever made, the ending is utterly Perfect... And then max payne 3 goes and takes a steaming dump all over it with "Max is Back and hes Shooting Brazillians, Baby!"

I was a teenager when I played this game. It did take a toll on my emotions at that time but it just made me stronger.
After spending an hour to make this game work, I was finally able to play the game for the first time ever. The whole campaign's journey was one that despite was way more bittersweet than the previous, was something that was really worth playing! This game is gonna have a special place in my heart. Beautiful.
Such tremendous writing. Of the 3 games, 2 is still my favorite. I even beat it on hard where you get the alternate ending and Mona lives. The writing and character work is phenomenal. I was heartbroken to hear of James Mccaffery's passing.

Max Payne 3 was a masterpiece. However in terms of cutscenes style's, and no nightmare levels, It was disappointing. However l loved how it was dark and gloomy and Brazil felt like a fresh air, but I hope if they will make Max Payne 4 I hope it's in New York. It had it's unique atmosphere.

Notice how Max says "But it was alright" differently in the 2 endings? In the Mona ending it sounds like he's moving on and letting go of Michelle and beginning his new life with Mona. Whilst in the original ending, it feels like he's accepted Michelle's passing and is no longer mourning even after Mona has died. Truly fantastic writing, fantastic voice acting and an incredibly powerful ending. R.I.P James McCaffrey, we'll never forget you ❤

I still remember those school days when i was afraid to play this game yet i finished its all level except the last one( My big brother when i was in school completed final level. I was so angry at him that i didn't talk to him for two days).

I understand many players will feel betrayed by the default ending (Mona's death) but the alternate ending just feels like a figment of Max's desperate imagination as he always thought he could enjoy happiness after all the hardships he has gone through. It's like Max picked up the pieces of a broken mirror and tried to fix it and hurt himself.
I keep telling people had mona lived she would've went to jail for killing sebastian gate the U.S senator and max would've went tojail or have been fired with no pension
No matter how many times you play but max payne and igi never gets old..
The lousy thing about Max Payne III, is that they didn't put back on max's past memories, as the FINAL battle with Lem, the murders of Mona, Valerie, Vinnie and Woden would have been sensational
They did but they ret coned it for example in Max Payne 2 Mona snuck up behind max and pistol whip him before they can get to Woden panic room however in the Max Payne comic after the fall , he had a chance to confront Woden before vlad killed him
There's tons of lousy things about Max Payne 3 as a story and as a sequel. Rockstar made a great over the top action game with awesome combat, but IMO completely butchered the tone/story and characters

kinda BGM played when Thanos fulfilled his destiny in Infinity War and found a place at end to rest himself. But you could actually see how much pain he went through in achieving his goals...you could look in his eyes..his sufferings.... and BGM rises...he smiles with pain....
6:28 - if you turn the TV in the far end of the room, the news host will say that Bravura actually survived the injuries and is in stable condition (despite the Max's dream).

This game was way way ahead of it's time what a storyline the whole team of this game successfully portrayed a broken man life and his tragic moments happened in his life this game is still now better than any other games ❤MAX PAYNE❤
With not saying much I know how opiates can be, and Max Payne 1 & 2 give a very depressive tone from the main character, it is very well thought, since I've noticed how opioids can eat away chunks of your persona and depress the hell out of you, and only a detective like Max Payne can give the accurate depiction of how it is to try to think clearly when on opioids.
But the games themselves, even with small budget cutscene comics was great, storytelling dragged me in as a kid and now as an adult after few replays, I love the story too

The only reason the secret ending works on any level is because you have already lost Mona in a previous playthrough before that. It would be such a dumb and pointless ending if it was just Mona surviving all along.

Fuck man.. This game was something else, It was so stylized as a 3rd person shooter with it's bullet time and the rest of his moves.. I still remember when I used to save and quit it used to come up saying something like "I was afraid" or something and the 12-13 year old me used to be at it again! "I had a dream... You know I honestly wished there had been more backstory to Vladimir Lem, it would have been nice to have seen when he first became a member of The Inner Circle, and to see exactly how and why he developed so much bitterness and resentment towards Alfred Woden, the voicemail to Woden from Vlad in the final chapter basically implies that Vlad felt unappreciated by Woden, and that's the closest thing you get to an answer smh
