  • Can the 2019 Sherco 500 Factory do single trail? I take it out in some sandy single up in Northern Victoria to find out. While not technical single trail it gives me a feel for the bike and its agility. In this sort of fast flowing single trail the 500 is perfect and very easy to ride. The best part is the versatility though as I run low on fuel and decide to ride home on the tar the 500 can handle this with ease as well. Love this bike.

Great single trail that one! Know it extremely well. I actually used to do the loop in the opposite direction and kept going down Back Boga Road before riding out to Goshen intersection along Lake Boga-Ultima Road and then back along Donald-Swan Hill Road where you were riding the single trail and back to Swan Hill. The loop usually takes around 50 mins. I actually did a video of the loop on my channel.

@@dirtbikeadv it isn't quite as good as your videos mate. I don't have the gear to talk while I am riding.....but I doubt people want to hear me huffing and puffing either 🤣

Very simular to our single tracks here in S.A Steve.
Because of all the rain, there all over grown at the moment aswell, in the past we have spent the entire ride with 5 guys with electric zip saws making tracks safe from those overhanging trees that block tracks.
The 500s make a good all round bike for most terrains.

Hi Steve. I heard you say the rotating mass hasn't been an issue, but I would like to know how it truly feels compared to the agility and feel of the 390. I have an XR400 and an XR650L. I would like to get a Beta and I plan to go to one of their demo days here in Ohio so I can try them all out. At this point I'm considering the 390 or even the 350 as I want something more agile and easy to handle in the rough stuff.
My XR400 is a great bike, but it's not really light. I made it street legal so there is some additional weight compared to a stock bike. The bike certainly isn't horribly heavy, but I'm 57 now, and as I get older I find that lighter is definitely better. The Honda is about 280 lbs (127 kilos) and it's kick start only. I see guys riding 240-265 lbs (109-120 kilos) KTM's and Betas, and I want to play too. For reference, I went on an organized enduro ride last summer on the XR400 when it was 90 deg F (33 deg C) with 90% humidity, and it kicked my butt. I started to suffer from heat exhaustion. I'll admit the kick start only feature was the main problem, but the weight was a big factor as well.
So I have convinced myself I need to go small and get a 350 or 390, but I also know I will be taking the bike on the asphalt at times. I don't like to ride on the road, but it's a necessity. Before anyone reading this suggests that I should just buy a 300 2 stroke for single track, please understand that I rarely go on a "single track only" ride. I am not a racer, and I will never be a racer. My trips are usually a mix of hard and easy terrain with some road work in between. I'm trying to find a bike that is a good compromise that allows for an easier time in the rough stuff, but still allows me to go 65mph if necessary on the asphalt without ringing the guts out of the engine. It's at this point that I start to wonder if I would be better off with a KTM or Beta 500 instead. However, that leads me right back to the question about excessive rotating mass and agility which is what I'm already dealing with. It's a vicious circle. I don't want to spend a bunch of money and realize I made a huge mistake.
I would appreciate your input. Thanks for reading this long post.

Hi Jim, yep my eyes are sore from all that reading.... Lol. Me personally I think you are thinking the right thoughts and going through the right processes, evaluating your terrain and riding style. One more thing to consider is your weight. If you are over 95kgs U might want to consider going to the 500's if your under the 350-390's are going to be perfect for what U want. The Beta's are the most agile in the market so if U are over 95kgs I would point U in thr 480 direction. The Sherco and KTM 500's are a bit more heavy to ride and less agile. If under 95kgs go the 350 if U like to rev the guts out of it and make it sing or go the 390 if U prefer to coast along lower in the rev range. Both great bikes. (Just between you and me I'm going to sell the Sherco 500 and get a 480 Beta. I weigh 95kgs)
      Hope this helps
      Regards Steve

@@dirtbikeadv Thanks for the reply Steve. I'm 1.8m and 100kgs. I'm not a skinny pup anymore so the 350 is probably out plus I don't like running in the upper rev range anyway. Remember I have an XR400. That bike is all about low rpm grunt and a decent mid-range. So since the 480 has good agility, I may lean towards it. I'm looking forward to trying the 390 and the 480 at the next demo day. Take care.

Can you do a quick run down between the sherco 500 and the husquivana 701 enduro which is better for road usage round town and general day rides including highways and what's better for off-road trails as I am in 2 mind and both bikes are around the same price but husquivana is packing 200 more cc

Shall do a bit later on the computer. Great question

    • @dirtbikeadv
      @dirtbikeadv  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi MrWW, yeah all very good questions and a situation I found myself in two years ago. An enduro bike set up for adventure or a dedicated adventure bike. Lots of questions to be answered here.
First up the 701 is better around town, day rides and highway rides no question but when the trails get rough, steep or you want to ride single trail the 501 excels.
So I started with a Beta 480 put a comfy seat, tower, rear rack and a long range tank. th-cam.com/video/hZOd8hR4KbY/w-d-xo.html
It was a go anywhere ADV bike that was reasonably comfortable and had reasonable range but with the tower no longer any good for single trail and enduro work and was not really designed for long highway days. MMMM?
Decided a two bike policy was the go with a Beta 390 and a KTM 690 with Rade tower, rack, comfy seat and extra Rade tank. Kept the 390 stock just using a Wolman E base some small rollies and a backpack and I had a great Ultralight ADV bike. (Since upgraded to Sherco 500 for a bit more power and some easier highway cruising) The 390/500 was still good for single trail and enduro work and I had a 690 dedicated mid weight ADV that was suitable for touring. That's where I am at now.
What you need to decide is what the majority of riding is you are going to do. You can leave the 501 stock and do what I do with a rackless system for ultralight ADV work and still use it for enduro work. Alternatively, you can set up a 501 with tower, rack, long range tank and just have it as a dedicated ultralight ADV bike. The KTM500 and 501 are the best option for this with their longer stroking motor. If you run with a 701 you will have a a nice light ADV and touring bike but nothing to do single or enduro riding on? Have a think about your predicted usage and make a decision from there
      Good luck
      Regards Steve

@@dirtbikeadv Hi mate, I wonder if you can elaborate a bit on the 390 working a bit hard? Were you doing too much open riding or did you find it working too hard everywhere? Will the 390 cruise happily at 80-90km's on transport sections between the good bush riding? I am considering selling my CRF450X and upgrading to either a a Beta 390 or a 480/500/501 as my allrounder bike. My other bikes are a Beta 300 and KTM 625. I love my 300 but it's bloody appalling to ride on transport sections. I'd be quite interested in hearing your thoughts on the differences between your 390 and Sherco 500. There's very few reviews going around comparing Beta 390's with 480/500's. I love the format of your video's, you give practical information for us regular blokes. Cheers.

@@bushybill7189 Hi Bill, yeah I don't like to rev bikes in general too hard just prefer to use the lower 75% of the rev band. I see guys on wr 250 and they just have to wring the poor things neck to get where there going. Secondly I believe you should buy a bike according to your weight so at 100kgs on on the upper end of the scale and add to this some camping gear and extra fuel and I've probably got 130kgs on the bike. So on the more open roads and big long hills I'd have to drop gears to get there so I just felt like I was working the 390 a bit hard. The bike had it all lite and agile in the single and yes no problem cruising on the open stuff at all. Just I'm a fat bastard.
Now the Sherco 500 does it a fair bit easier on the open stuff and is still agile so for me it is a win, win. My bike cruises easier but is still agile.
      Thanks for watching
