Thanks for visiting Pikeville! But you were sooo close to Main Street and second street which was to your right at the parking garage. Historic courthouse where the hayfield and McCoy trials took place and lots of local food and shops. Also the Appalachian arena and city park. All the really pretty downtown places you missed lol Hambley Blvd (the road you were walking on) is basically a bypass of the actual downtown. You’ll have to come back sometime and explore more :)

I loved the city and will be going back soon. There's so much I'd like to check out on a 2nd and 3rd visit. Pike County is Kentucky's largest county so it's really impossible to see all of it in a day, let alone a few hours.

It's common in mountainous areas that towns are built in the valleys between the mountains thus the towns are narrow and stretched out. Building on steep hillsides isn't practical and would be difficult to access in winter when covered in ice and snow.
It is also common there will be a creek or small river tracing its way through the valleys which supply water to the towns.

Myers towers are for low income housing and students, its over 40 years old, my mom is on limited income of 700dollars a month and she's living in the Myers tower on 8th floor, its definitely adged but it was a 1st of its kind in the 80s. Lol

It's a beautiful building on prime real estate but there's just a few folks who probably should be more mindful of what they put on their balconies. It's not the worst thing but visually it takes away from the aesthetic of the city. That's more a management issue than anything else. Thanks for the comment!!

Myers Towers is subsidized senior housing for persons over age 62 or with disabilities. It is part of Pikeville Housing Authority. Not atypical for the period it was built, the building certainly is not big on aesthetics . I am a retired MSW with a concentration in Older Adult Issues and End of Life Care. And I have lived in four different senior housing projects. Having a private area to sit outside, access to fresh air, is a luxury in low income senior housing, albeit that that option at Myers Towers is not visually attractive from the road below. As you observed, many residents there have set up their balcony in a way to enjoy that uncommon feature in senior housing. It would be a draw for elders, like myself, to seek housing here. I was pleased to see and hear you talk about the greenery and general cleanliness in downtown Pikeville. However, your perseveration over the balconies at Myers Towers building was offensive and unnecessary. What is your problem?

I figured it was something like that. It doesn't look to be in bad shape, but I couldn't get over all the towels on the balconies.
