Haunted York House in Pikeville KY & how its connected to the Hatfield and McCoy feud

  • Just for some October fun!
The James York house was built in the late 1800s (Colonel John Dils house) Its neighbors are Perry Cline and Randall McCoy's old house. If you visit 223 Main Street today, you can see the original stained glass windows and fireplaces in the same places they were more than a century ago when the bloody Hatfield & McCoy feud was approaching its end. But there’s something important missing from the old Queen Anne/Second Empire residence - its tower. The tower was mysteriously removed during the mid-1900s and no one knows why, but there is speculation. Perhaps it had something to do with the bloodcurdling screams of a child. The girl’s name was Geraldine Creekmore and she was the daughter of Tot Ruth York and her husband, Tom Creekmore. According to local folklore, baby Geraldine would wail and wail for no discernible reason. It seems she fell ill and suffered a high fever that caused permanent brain damage. As a result, her loud screams were a frequent occurrence that disturbed the neighbors.
Geraldine spent a great deal of time in the tower room of the family home and townsfolk reported that when she would see people walking past, she would scream from the window. The piercing cries unnerved adults and terrified children. Geraldine died sometime in the mid-20th century, but even after she was laid to rest, many avoided the York House, claiming it was haunted. People walking or driving along Main Street at night told tales of Geraldine in a flowing white garment standing in the window where she always stood. Others claimed to have heard her hair-raising screams, particularly when there was a full moon. Before long, the family removed the tower, the most distinctive and attractive feature of the old mansion. Thereafter, stories of the haunted York house began to fade, though in the 1980s, students at Pikeville College reported lights going on and off of their own accord and other strange activity at in the old mansion.
But there’s a happy ending to this tale. In 2014, the City of Pikeville purchased the home and during restoration, workers discovered the original walls and windows of the tower room stored in the spring house out back. Hopefully, the tower room will be returned to its proper place atop the old manse and perhaps Geraldine will return to her favorite room. Will her spirit gaze down from the restored tower and her cries once again pierce the stillness of the night under the soft glow of the full moon?
Watch the video to see how its connected to the feud.

The Creekmore mansion was a different house that was located on Elm street. It was recently purchased and demolished by the University of Pikeville

Great video! A historic house haunted house is beyond interesting. Back before handicapped children were accepted into society, people w/ wealth sadly hid their child in an attic or a room called “the disappointment's room.” Could that be a reason the tower is no longer attatched? Maybe rid the house of a shameful practice?

My aunt owned this building and ran The Classy Stork during the filming of this video. The sellers didn’t tell her the code to the basement. Strange.

Great Video! However, John Dils/Dials is my Dad’s Great Grandfather. He had several more than 5 children. Closer to upwards of 10 with two different wives.

    Hello,
I was just wondering if this is the property where the gentleman will only let family members, and descendants visit , like once, or twice a year ?. Thought it was that whole thing of a law suit and the gentleman getting upset.
    Thanks. Love the knowledge.

Wow! I just happened onto this by accident and what a surprise. I never knew about the Hatfield/McCoy connection to this house. My husbands Great Grandfather, Lou C. Smith, married Augusta and James York's widowed daughter Kate in 1917. They lived in one of the other Dil's Mansions on 179 College St with Kates adopted daughter Pluma McCoy, who died in 1922. Pluma had taken Kates first husbands last name of Campbell as they fostered her. I believe Plumas mother Addie McCoy died during childbirth. Apparently Lou and Kate are both buried in the Dils Cemetery. Is there anyone who can confirm this for me?

In that part of pike county, you either have a cemetery on a hill.....or down in the creek bottom.

Thank you, for a very interesting, and informative video. Cool looking house, I am guessing that whoever owns, or oversees the house will not
permit any pictures of the inside, but
a person can take as many pictures of the outside as wanted. There is a historic house about 15 minutes from my home. No pictures inside the house are allowed, but a person can take as many pictures of the outside as wanted. This would have made a great video for Halloween.
Thank you very much, take care.
