Beast master was off because of the action required to use em and the fact is we want Rin Tin tin or Lassie but we got was Old Yella. (Rangers need a magic work to!)
Per the PHB section on mounted combat, "if the mount provokes an opportunity attack while you're on it, the attacker can target you or the mount." The wording's a bit weird but, any way you look at it, anyone riding a pteranodon wouldn't provoke any opportunity attacks since the pteranodon itself doesn't provoke opportunity attacks.
Fun fact - The Beastmaster companion is not limited to 1/4 CR. That's just what you start with. There's nothing saying that you can't get higher CR companions as you play, either through quests or downtime or whatever.
I'm catching up on the podcast and heard the delightful voice of Eric Silver so I had to hustle on over to TH-cam from Spotify to watch this one. Love Eric, love you two, love this show and Join the Party is my favorite real play podcast. Keep up the great work, all of y'all!
I think it's confirmed that tasha's cauldron will give the beastmaster the Primal Companions from ua. Some decent beast companions that actually scale well with the ranger
I have liked and commented! I continue to serve the dungeoncast X3! Are you there milords? Once again these fair lands of knowledge and laughter are under siege, and I-i fear I may be at fault for this travesty. Shades from some unknown unholy place now swarm the city. It began two days ago on the night of hallows eve. The children were wearing their masks mimicing monsters, preparing to have their fun throughout the night. Then the shadows attacked. The guard and I were overwhelmed almost immediately. The peoples screams and the clanking of our metal armor and weapons still have my ears ringing. I couldn't stop these monsters, I couldn't save the people they took. The night was long, when daybreak came the day was quiet. We tried our best to find as many surviovors as we could, but the things returned the next night. Fires broke out as people fled and the guards fought. I feel faint now...I'm tired. The damn things took a chunk out of my belly. The blood still hasn't stopped gushing. I had to crawl inside of this abandoned alchemists shop to take cover. The only light I have in here comes from the light of the fires blazing outside shining in. I-i can't move, my body won't move. I'm exhausted, I used all of my energy smiting as many of them as I could... *the paladin falls unconscious on the floor of the shop. Shadows stalk the streets for people to take for their own. This place is devoid of knowledge and laughter now.* Well that was a fun bit. Hope you enjoyed reading it. My power went out after writing it the first time so I had to rewrite all of it. I don't think it was as good the second time I wrote it. 😑 Also really liked seeing your friend on today. I never watched the original monk episode so I haven't seen him before. He made the episode even more fun and this episode flew by. Didn't even feel like I watched a video that was over an hour long. I'm glad someone else drew the Witcher comparison, I was thinking "is that a witcher in the thumbnail?" When I saw the two swords on the characters back in the thumbnail. Speaking of the monster slayer subclass and the witcher, this reminds me of a character I've wrote. I actually mentioned the idea for this character in one of my past comments before I detailed him further. I never came up with a class for him because I ended up writing him into my own little stories that aren't related to dnd. He's a dwarf named grem diamond-shatter. I won't get into his family names backstory, because then I'd have to write down all of my Dwarven lore to explain it. This comment would be much longer. Anyway I digress, the idea for grem's character was heavily inspired by the idea of a witcher. He's essentially a mercenary that specializes in slaying monsters and for him preparation is half the battle. He keeps meticulous notes on every beast he can, magical, or mundane. He's lived long enough to train in the use of several different weapons and he owns his own business for killing monsters. He's also kind of greedy and a bit of a penny pincher. 🤑 He hates being overcharged for stuff he buys, and he dislikes missing out on payments for his work. Still he has a good heart. Hes usually friendly and takes care of his own. Not an incredibly original character, but I'm fond of him. He's known for strategising before any hunt, and always carries various tools and weaponry on him so that he's always prepared for a fight. He usually has some kind of basic melee weapon wehter it be an axe, a sword, etc. A dagger hidden in his boot. A special crossbow to snipe things from afar and take down flying enemies. And he has a device attached to his wrist that acts like a mini shotgun of sorts. It doesn't do a huge amount of damage and its short range, but it can be used to blast something in the face to stop it in its tracks while he makes his escape, or even utilizes the opening to deal some damage. He also knows how to trains some animals as mounts, and currently has a warg he can ride around. So basically his whole deal as a character is coming up with clever plans to fight monsters. Welp thats all I have this week, don't know if anyone's even going to bother reading all of this, but I hope it was enjoyable enough. Hope your day is going well will and brian. Can't wait for SQS tomorrow! 🙂
Im playing a beastmaster right now. He has a wolf companion and also took the magic initiate feat for find familiar and has an owl familiar. Its really fun with these two.(and the other players)
I once ran a character with a monkey, and the DM ruled that the monkey could use a monk specific amulet that allowed it to use ki strikes (this was third edition). I forget the specifics, but it was so much fun visualizing this critter leaping through the air and Kung fu-ing the shit out of our enemies! He was a good monkey 🐒
KInd of like you said we homebrewed Shared Spells to level 7 and at level 15 we gave the animal companion the barbarians bear totem Rage ability with bonus damage and resistance to everything but psychic attacks once per long rest (we nicknamed this 'going Cujo'). Plus the pet also shares the level 20 Foe Slayer bonus. The giant crab makes a good companion with its incapacitating claws and high base armor.
Strongly disagree. Eric seems to have very little understanding of the core game, and It seemed he was only on this episode to try and promote his game/stream.
@@duncanlang3743 What? He DMs on a well-known DnD podcast, and has for several years... And of course he's promoting himself, that's what people do. Will and Brian have been interviewed by him on Join The Party, and they promoted their show too. It's just how you get your name out there.
@@pricerowland Fair enough. I totally respect and understand the idea of streamers sharing the spotlight with each other. Its one of the only ways they can advertise their content. Giant Frog, swim speed, decent hp, but also its bite is an automatic grapple and restrained status. The opponent must use its action to break it, so if you can keep that up you can get alot of free attacks against an enemy.
As a DM and a player here's my hot take on the Beastmaster Ranger. It isn't fun, both to play and to have on your team. The pet slows the game down once combat starts, the pet will get mauled by just about anything, and your friend at the table will get frustrated that the subclass just doesn't deliver on the class fantasy. As a DM you will generally have to homebrew some items or handwave some rules to compensate for the pet having the durability and damage of a wet noodle. The class SHOULD feel like the Beastmaster Hunter from WoW, where you and your pet do bath salts and chimp out on enemies for crazy damage and immunity from crowd control. The "Drakewarden" UA Ranger subclass looks like a great redesign of this subclass based off of overwhelming community feedback. It scales as your group progresses, it buffs the party (so it's not veiwed as annoying by the other players at the table), and it delivers on the fantasy of growing in power in tandem with your companion creature.
If your wondering why the Beast Hunter might know zone of truth... negotiations is this really a blessed holy water or is it just water that you pulled from the well, do not need to find out you got cheated when you facing undead. Or perhaps your hired to take out that small band of goblins but they do not tell you that their just the underlings of a local orc crime boss or warlord, and they might take offense to you taking out their underlings.

Burrow speed doesn't make tunnels. You have to have the tunneler feature. You're just pushing dirt with burrow.
The spell zone of truth is for shape changer monsters.
The spider is a cool beast, but I can't see letting in make an entire spider web in 1 round. Maybe over the course of a day?
Isn’t beast master getting overhauled with tashas cauldron?
I'm unsure of that but Ik in Tasha's Cauldron they're publishing the UA - Variant Class Features for all classes (with minor changes)
I think the ranger along with other classes is getting varient features and the beastmaster is getting something in the form of improved beasts.
I'm using the new Tashas rules for ranger. Ita different but fun. And you feel like a 3rd wheel outside your terrain.
