They are for *most* Bach. I'm not a big fan of their performance of the Double Violin Concerto on TH-cam. But for just about everything else by Bach they're among the best.

When it comes to Bach's Cantatas, Oratorio and other vocal works I'd also recommend Bachstiftung TH-cam channel. They are just as good!

@@Nooticus I go with Masaaki Suzuki - I have his 55 CDs of church cantatas as well as some of the seculars. The other version I would recommend is Philip Herreweghe & Collegium Vocale Gent.

There is not much better than Bach. As a kid, I was fascinated by Switched On Bach. That is where my Bach fascination started about 60 years ago. Mike in Oz

As a keyboard and piano jazz musician, I always return to Bach. With Bach you find an endless source of surprise and inspiration. The inner lines, subtle tonalities, modal changes, and disonances combine to form a whole that transcends it's parts.

If you like this you will love Bach's St Matthew Passion. If you don't want to react to the whole piece - it is rather long - you should react to 'Erbarme dich mein Got'. One of the most beautiful pieces.

The trumpet in this very good performance is a so-called slide trumpet (Tromba da tirarsi) from the 17th century, which was used to play chromatic tone sequences in middle pitches. The instrument could not establish itself and was later mostly replaced by the soprano trombone towards the end of the 17th century, but this instrument also remained a marginal phenomenon. The introduction of valve technology on trumpets and horns from the early 19th century was a very important improvement in the playing possibilities of these brass instruments.

There's a saying "When god is at work the angels sing Bach, when he's resting the angels sing Mozart." This is a great cantata. You'd like the Sinfonia to Cantata 29, And the Mass in B minor - long but worth it

Lovely of you to react to this channel!! They have quality content and very informative documentaries about the pieces they play!
Also, just a bit of info, during the duet after the intro and recicative, the violinist plays on what is called a "Violino Piccolo". It's tuned slightly higher than a normal violin and is slightly smaller. 😊

One of my favorite Bach vocal pieces is his motet, "Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied" (BWV 225). It's in three parts and about 16 minutes long. I strongly recommend you listen the version by the RIAS Kammerchor and Akademie fur Alte Music Berlin, conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann. You can find it on TH-cam, and it has (at least to me) the best sound quality compared to other versions.

Hello my friend from the UK 😊 Wachet auf is something I listen to at least once a week. This is a lovely period performance but my favourite recording is the well known Richter/Bach orchestra and choir of the mid 1960's. I highly recommend it, it's an almost unreal other world sound due to the powerful forces he has at his disposal. Keep up the great work comrade 😊

Thanks for playing this for us. I've never heard the piece with English translations before. Bach's music has been a lifelong love of mine. Some things I appreciate about this piece: The rock steady pulse in the orchestral/choral sections feels so much like a walking or marching pulse. What is this supposed to be? Jesus' footsteps as he approaches us? The piece derives it's drive, I think, from that steady walk throughout.
I've never understood Bach's metaphor of the 'bridegroom' (brautige). He uses it over and over in his sacred pieces. I suppose the bridegroom is Christ. But why the wedding metaphor, exactly? And the allegory of the wise and foolish virgins, again the bridegroom approaching the bride, but most of the virgins are not ready. This is another trope in Bach's (Lutheran?) lyrics, the watchers waiting in the dark, but just what is waited for is never explicitly told. I suppose that again, this is the arrival of Christ. The second coming? I was raised a Lutheran, but these fine points of allegorical theology were never taught to me.

I'll be blasphemous here and say try the opening chorus bumped up a bit in speed - ignore the words - treat it like a sinfonia with voices - and some real joy and dancing emerges. Terribly naughty of me - but I dare you.
