I live in Carrollton and we take our dogs on walks in the greenbelt. A year ago two bobcats tried to attack our smaller dog. I ran them off but now I open carry when we go on walks. We have seen coyotes, Bobcats and even a Jaguarino out there. I wouldn't shoot them unless I had no choice but rabid animals are always a danger as they are unpredictable.
For you to walk your dog outside in the Nome facility of mountain lions or bears is animal abuse keep your dog in his yard and pick up the doodles from his yard and maybe your dog will be safe
This is why coyote populations need to be managed. Coyote populations increase and are pushed into city areas when there are not enough predators to control the numbers. Most wild coyotes are fearful of humans... however, in situations like this they lose that fear.
oh wow. that brings back memories, strange how different fate work... Depends on how young the children were. If they were the size of teenagers, then yes. If they were younger children like Kindergarten or Elementary age, it makes more sense. Coyotes are opportunists, and particularly young children that are seemingly unattended could easily be seen as viable "prey" to a Coyote. At the very least, the fact that the Coyote retreated after adults noticed and reacted to the attack means that rabies should be off the table as far as what caused the attack, as a rabid Coyote would just keep attacking regardless of the danger it was in, and it wouldn't stop until it was dead. The fact that the Coyote tried to drag the targeted children back into the woods to me indicates that the children that were attacked were all very young and small (I would guess no older than 4 or 5 years old), as teenagers would definitely have fought back and also been large enough that a Coyote would likely not even risk attacking them in the first place.

Wait, wait, wait! Activists say that coyotes don't attack people. They are experts in the matter.

Food has to be scarce around there so pets and small children will be on the menu.
Coyotes are also opportunistic, so even if food isn't scarce, an unattended young child could still look like viable "prey" to a Coyote.

Have you seen the Amish coyote hunts? That is exactly how they flush them out, except hunters are waiting further down to take them out.
