    A couple notes on this: Yes, you CAN make more power with a turbo setup, or going with a 6.0, or whatever else. However, this test was done in the interest of proving that there are many ways to gain power. Hot Rodders have been building 383's for decades and making great power from small block Chevy's. If you're interested to see what doing a turbo setup would gain you, check out our LST Turbo Camshaft test video from a couple months back!

    Seems like the way to go for the money. You have more displacement than the 6.2 and half the money. Plus you can gap the rings and set it up how you want... good stuff!

    Be very careful. People have been known to do this and end up pulling the skirt out of the bore and snapping rods. Look up the video by Tom Nelson Racing engines "Why is the LS so good" and you'll find out why. Unless you are running an RHS block I dont suggest this. You rock that piston in that cylinder just once and your motor is history. Just something to consider when picking out which piston you are going to run.

    • @masta51
      @masta51 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 3.9 has a lot better options and 580-590 hp so leaving a little more on the table for a conventional ring pack. The 4.0 slugs now on the market move the rings tighter up high and removes the skirt so it's less likely to rock in the bore. They should have just went to a 6.0 or bbc 8.1 if they want to make some real power.

    • @jubjub905

    That engine won't hold up in the long run you would be pulling the piston too far out of the sleeve. Watch this video and he explains why.

    I have a 2004 5.3 engine with 706 heads and I also have a set of 243 heads. What the best heads to put on a 5.3

    • @Compcams1976
      @Compcams1976  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      243 Heads are generally considered to be the best stock casting Cathedral Port heads there are.

      COMP Cams Does 243 heads work best with flat or disc pistons. Would I lower my compression if I put them on my engine

    • @Carado5150
      @Carado5150 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would lower the compression but just have the heads milled or run a thinner head gasket. 243 is a better head.

    Why not just start with a 6.2? They make aluminum 6.2 put the same heads intake and cam on it and it makes the same power 6.2 liters is like 383 ci

  • @nastychevys

    I love the info, but the whole 5k bolt on 5.3l stuff seems a little rich for an engine I can replace for 500 bucks.
    I mean how many dollars per horsepower are you willing to spend? Why not take that same 5.3, and stuff a good cam, and a single turbo to make the same 600, and do it with way less money, and effort. Plus when it blows up from beating on it you are only out a junk yard engine, and not a high dollar rotating assembly, and heads that are trashed.
    Just seems like a lot of playing "pick the most expensive parts" engine building, and we have yet to hear any real speed secrets.
    Right now the only speed secret seems to be a fast lsxr manifold that costs 3 times what a tbss manifold costs, and it delivers very little comparatively.

    • @mastertek383
      @mastertek383 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And what the fast intake does gain in hp is paid for with precious feetus pounds out of the torque account

    • @KingJT80
      @KingJT80 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The block itself is pretty damn strong. So it wouldn't blow up with a stroker kit in it and you probably wouldn't spin it past 6500-7k. But a turbo would be good with about a .550 lift turbo specific cam in a stock 5.3 but you don't wanna run a crazy cam with no valve relief or else it'll be a boat anchor way sooner than later

      @Richard Skipper a 5.3 makes sense when everyone is taking everything else and caught on to cheap hp LSXs

      @Richard Skipper Actually, in the past year alone we've released more budget friendly engine and valvetrain options than ever before! We know where the market is, but there is also a limit to how "cheap" we are willing to produce products and still maintain a high quality standard.

  • @albertgaspar627
    @albertgaspar627 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem is going to be piston rock when that increased stroke pulls the piston out further at BDC. Those who run these strokers long enough on the street are reporting these issues at refresh time.

      L77 was a 6.0 only offered in the Caprice PPV. The L76 was the 6.0 in the G8 and trucks which I think you’re talking about. Look at the head casting number, the L76 has 823 heads and the L33 has something else
