    What are the best Kill Teams for new players? Kill Team has a ton of factions and the list is changing constantly, so where should you start?
    In this video I have a few criteria that you should consider. The price should be under $70. They need to be cheap. They should be fairly simple. They should be good, at least not garbage tier. And it should be a Kill Team that won't be replaced anytime soon and outdated.

    My “beginner faction” vote is for Kommandos, because one box builds all the specialists and they have higher than average wounds, which is a bit of a buffer for those new to line-of-sight rules.

      They also fun to paint, since it Ork and you paint them however you want

      Totally agree. With a lot of the other boxes you get stuck having to pick which specialist you want

      Orks are a ton of fun to paint, and if you make each one a little different it doesn’t look weird like it would with a lot of teams

      Nah not at all, Intecessors. They are brianless, they can just win by... being on the board. The vast majority of matchips can barely even score against them.

    VetGuards are great, but if you want to get all possible options you'll need to buy two boxes, and I find them quite hard to build for a beginner.
    For absolute beginners I personally stick to the compendium and would recommend either Space Marines or Necrons. You can easily find single models or sprues for cheap and they are much easier to build and paint while their rules are not too complicated to learn.

    Great vid mate! Spot on with your starter team choices! I dig the Scions as another good choice, but as we all know they will probably be replaced at some point in the near future!!

      Thank you! I really should have shouted out the Scions, only reason I didn’t was I keep hearing rumors that they are getting a new team before too long.

    I think a good beginner faction to try is Space Marines. Just about everyone has some and from my experience they're very easy to pick up as a new player!

    The team that I’d recommend for beginners playing against other beginners is Space Marines. One box of intercessors or infiltrators can be split with a friend for 2 five man teams (balanced against each other, so no need for the sixth operative) and they’re fairly simple with easy to understand gear and ploys. 3 APL is much more forgiving for newcomers since they can move more to learn positioning and can do mission actions as well as other actions. The limited number of operatives makes the game less overwhelming to learn and the lack of specialists prevents mindflood by learning the basics before having to learn special rules for both your team and your opponent’s team. Honestly with the context of the Phobos Strike Team, I’d say the best thing to start with may be a box of Reivers, that way if you decide to graduate on to the expansion team you have a set of compatible models ready to go. That’s my two cents though, I know that it’s different if you’re jumping into the deep end and playing against experienced players with their own teams. While compendium marines are easy to learn and play, they are kind of doo doo garbage compared to other teams higher on the tier list.

    • @NightfireGamingYT
      @NightfireGamingYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are great points. Space Marines were going to be on my list, the only reason most of them didn't make it was that because you got that 6th model, some of them stop being 1 box or you couldn't split them with a friend if you are playing "by the book". Obviously my channel has a ton of homebrew and "how to be cheap" stuff, so playing 5 v 5 with them is a great idea to me.

    It breaks your second rule but obviously the best starter team is warpcoven because win or lose, it's all going according to plan.
    Jokes aside probably death guard, blight launcher +plasma gives 2 sources of ap, and their resilient rule (5+ fnp and can't be injured) gives them some cushy forgiveness for inevitable misplays. Though they're slow af, they do have ways to move a little faster

  • @citizendisco
    @citizendisco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Really useful. I do kinda think VetGuard are pretty complicated for a beginner. I’d advise Scions myself. Decent but simple. Might break the rule of ‘won’t get replaced’ with Karskin coming (maybe). Kommandos are a great call!

    Jumping into 40k universe tonight. Learned theres a community nearby so i cant wait to see which faction i might jump into. Might do trynaids which i know might have a high learning curve but im just gonna enjoy playing em as one of the life game rule is play what you think looks cool even if i lose, as this game will be a new experience for me

      I absolutely love Tyranids. I think you’ll be fine playing them as a first team.
      If you go with Warriors, it can be an expensive team. If you go with Genestealers it won’t be bad cost wise and either set up is decent and won’t have a bad learning curve.
      I personally like the Warriors more as far as looks/playstyle but that’s totally personal preference.
      Also welcome to the hobby!

  • @CrimsonTemplar2
    @CrimsonTemplar2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My recommendation for a beginner team is Grey Knights - ideally start with a mirror match to learn the game.
    The others you mentioned are good options, but GK have 6 bodies & you can build a couple options out of one Strike Squad box.

    • @NightfireGamingYT
      @NightfireGamingYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using a mirror match is a good idea, I’m trying to get one of my friends into Kill Team and I’m suggesting Grey Knights to him 👍

    • @CrimsonTemplar2
      @CrimsonTemplar2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My thinking is that a mirror match is optimal because it is balanced against itself. I tried teaching a friend KT with Marines vs Kommandos (in my defense those were the minis at hand) before I realized how thoroughly outclassed compendium marines were, so it left a sour taste in his mouth about the game.

    • @NightfireGamingYT
      @NightfireGamingYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CrimsonTemplar2 Good point. My first few games of Kill Team 2021 were basically the best vs the worse teams (on accident, no one knew the meta) so a few people were immediately turned off by it. We got them to eventually get back into the game but I was worried for a bit. Mirror matches would have made that way easier.

    • @NightfireGamingYT
      @NightfireGamingYT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would get any two of the Kill Team specific boxes. Like the Eldar Corsairs. Those teams will all be decently balanced to each other and you can pick the ones you think look the coolest/ the most fun.
      And if you don’t have all of the terrain and other stuff most of the boxes will have 2 teams and everything you need.

      @@NightfireGamingYT I remember there were people who actually performed well with kroot in tournaments. They are the most fun race to play kill team they have a weirdly satisfying presence.
      They are not great for new players though back then i remember they were extremely fragile and they played like glasscanons requiring a really good understanding of the board and on prioritizing risky targets, those who played usually had lots of experience with most races prior. Have no idea if any sort of rebalance took place.

    I mean, Phobos and Blooded have QUITE a few extra rules… You’ve got all the special abilities and decision fatigue of Phobos, along with the intercessor special rules, incursor special rules, and the choice of operatives. There’s also all the special rules for Blooded, commissar, bullgryn, etc, not to mention Blooded tokens.

    While custodes are easy to play I wouldn't necessarily recommend playing them if you want to keep opponents to play against. My deathwatch have been wiped playing against them and the other player we had rage quit our campaign because his traitor legionaries team was table as well. With that said chaos marines can be a fun and beginner friendly team. It gets more interesting once you add cultists.

      Good feedback. My group had that issue when the game first came out and they were the 4 APL team but it hasn't been too bad since. A lot of people I play with tend to play the more powerful teams so I think that helps. Not on purpose, they just think they are the coolest teams and they happen to be strong.
      Chaos Marines would be a solid choice, I've actually seen several other people recommend them for a first team recently.
