What I always loved about this episode is how it ties up Millers story arc. We saw earlier he has a heroic impulse to save people - here, he ends up saving earth. He does it by using his intuition to realise that Julie has infected the protomolecule back, and is piloting Eros. He saves the girl - at least from loneliness and from being abandoned - and gets the girl. And then he dies. It’s a great way to tie up his story - and hers.

Such a smart writing choice too. Hordes of panicked people running around in the streets (as a lesser production might choose) is way less effective than one close personal story.

The Miller arc from a belter who doesn't care about much, including the belt, to a savior of Earth, is quite the journey. Glad you enjoyed it. As you're two months ahead on Patron this won't surprise you: many characters are on arcs.

Them being long haul truckers at the beginning and becoming a crew is the most TTRPG thing about the show and really shows its roots. "your caravan gets attacked by goblins, what do you do?"

As far as your questions about the protomolecule and Julie, it's hard to talk about since-as you guessed-there's more to learn about the protomolecule. It is worthwhile to think back to some things we've already seen though. First, in s2e1, Miller tells Naomi that he dreams of Julie taking his hand and saying, "You belong with me." And she did that in this episode. Then think back to season 1, and Julie's last thoughts before she died. She saw that bird that Miller always saw on Ceres. And she saw Miller standing in her doorway wearing the hat that he left on Ceres.
I'm not going to say *anything* else about that stuff. I just wanted to remind you in case you forgot, since some folks forget those scenes given their brevity. In my experience, for those that remember the scenes and take some time to form theories, at least 25% of the time they get something right. And the rest is just a lot of fun to discover. 😁
Oh and speaking of s2e1: remember that doctor that Holden had to kill in this episode? On The Marasmus? We saw that doctor talking on a news broadcast that Miller and Holden were watching while they were getting their cancer treatment in the Roci's sickbay. It took me a few rewatches to catch that one. 😅

Thanks for the reminders. This show is definitely brilliant from even just a storytelling standpoint. It must be very rewarding to binge, even if I'm not binging lol. If I had more time this weekend I would almost certainly rewatch the first book, before the next episode.

@@CasualNerdReactions It's an amazing binge. I've done it five times now. I've noticed new details each time. Even in the first episode, I've noticed details that didn't register until seeing much later episodes multiple times. The planning and discipline it took to create this is hard to wrap my head around.

It really is the best book to TV adaptation I have seen, and with the authors being so involved in the process all the changes really make sense to serve the story.

    • @pssthpok
      @pssthpok 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

The quality of the source material plays into it too. Though having read them, I can see how parts would be difficult to just transcribe into video (inner monologues have to have their points made in a different way). And the number of characters is large (some were fused together into series characters).
I swear that I can FEEL the devotion of everyone who worked on this show to make it as great as possible. I think it starts with the script and producers, and then flows outwards to casting, acting, directing, costume, props, lighting, editing, you name it, The Expanse EXCELLS at it.

The protomolecule is one of those things where you'll likely change your idea of what it actually is a few times before you actually get it. The series is really good at presenting it in new ways to help narrow down our understanding of it over the seasons/books, so I'd say to avoid asking for explanations because the show will get you there in time

The thing about the story and the transition from book to TV series, this show took storytelling to a Whole next level. This show does such a fantastic job of breaking the status quo of story tropes, while keeping the audience engaged. They did in fact do a good job with their scope, though the books did make the passing of time more realistic in the books, but you can't rightly expect audiences to be happy with months or even years of downtime between events.
But, don't worry, things don't really slow down from here.

Also, the adaptation added the Earth/Avasarala scenes (to get Shohreh on contract), and added scenes from the Butcher of Anderson Station novella. It really was amazingly done! I'm still teary eyed from the end... Onward to Book 2!

Perhaps the first of many times when Clinton Shorter's brilliant score rises out of the background and really overtly elevates a scene. He wrote it and they recorded it and when he watched it sync'd to the video and dialogue he decided it wasn't in the right octave to hit the feels as effectively as he wanted. There wasn't really time or budget to do it again, so he paid out of his own pocket for a string player in London to re-dub each part (in Air Studios IIRC, which has a beautiful acoustic for that kind of thing).

I feel this episode explains why Julie saw the bird and Miller in the hat and why Miller was seeing Julie. The Protomolucle can defy the laws of physics so who's to say that it sent messages and influences back through time to bring Miller and Julie together for this episode. They were fated to be together and that's beautiful. Thank you Joe Miller! You will be missed.

Really made me wish Hollywood would adapt more books, back when The Expanse was still going. There were a few years there were it seemed like all the best TV and movies were stories taken from actual books or at least short stories (Arrival). But now they just butcher everything, and they've been speedrunning their way through any IP with a built-in audience and making awful adaptations of it. Learned all the wrong lessons, it seems. Now they're on to ruining video games.

More than hope, Miller starts down the path because he wants to show his bosses that he isn’t a fuck up, he’s a good cop that does good work. When he needs to. One of Millers defining traits is needing to show his boss that he’s smarter than them.

I believe Amazon rights for The Expanse expired two years after the Season 6 finished because they didn't produce any Expanse-related content. So Alcon Entertainment is free to peddle it to anyone else. Will be hard though, because events of books 7-9 require... a lot of budget. Movies are an option.

This episode does not spoon-feed you as to how we are seeing gleaming blue Julie Mao. It leaves you wondering how that could happen, so let's wander around a bit. The avatar of Julie is naked in a Barbie-doll sort of way. We last saw her naked and dead in that shower in the Blue Falcon, or maybe our last look was when Dr. Dresden was drawing some fluids from her body to serve as the essence of the innoculations later given to the residents of Eros, once again while her corpse rested in that same shower stall. There was no scene showing her transported into the lobby of the Blue Falcon. Someone or something moved her there, or possibly built the avatar in that spot. I think the latter is more likely, and the builder is the protomolecule, but you can beg to differ it you like.
Back when I watched this episode, I was convinced that what happened to Julie involved disassembly of her corpse into atoms/molecules, mapping of same by the PM, and then storage of that data for later retrieval. That includes mapping of her brain and all the synaptic connections. The PM would have to possess monumental storage capacity to accomplish that result, but I've read that computer scientists right now are working on biologically-based data storage system and quantum rather than binary storage techniques, and the reports say the increase in storage capacity will be unbelievable. So, to me, the idea that the PM could store all the data needed to recreate anybody infected on Eros (hence the voices heard on Ceres before the Roci left for Eros) seemed within the realm of possibility. I'm not at all certain why Julie's body had to be so accurately reproduced. Maybe all those "cables" running out of her underside imply she was some sort of CPU needed to run Eros. Maybe her consciousness desired to create that body, and the cross-infection proposed by Miller actually did happen. I don't know.
The idea that a person might achieve immortality by having their brain saved to a hard drive and then downloaded into an android or some commandeered youthful human body is a fairly common Sci-Fi story line. Sometimes the "youthful human body" is a genetic clone kept in suspended animation until the death of the original person triggers the awakending of one of the clones. It's all interesting speculation and the basis for some stimulating conversation. There is always also the religous angle to consider. What is a soul? Can you download one and save it for later use in a new body? If a soul is not invovled, what exactly is a human being? This episode, I think, begs the viewer to ask all of those questions. A lot of questions got answered by this book-ending episode, and it is the way of The Expanse to always present you with a new and larger set of questions whenever it answers some for you. It is also the way of The Expanse to eventually answer some of those new questions for you, so strap in and enjoy the ride.

This Book was titled "Leviathan Wakes" after all - and only the the Book is titled "Leviathan Falls"
So whatever exactly the titular Leviathan is that was just unleashed, we're going to have to deal with it for a while.
