I've read from one of the Expanse crew that Jane was absolutely in love with The Expanse universe and his place in it, and on his last shooting he made an entire speech thanking the crew for the wonderful art they created together. The entire show reeks that the people who were working on it loved what they were doing.
I don't normally binge shows, but I flew through The Expanse in a week. My wife wasn't watching it at the time, but she walked in the room on this episode right at the part where Miller walks in on Julie. I screamed at her "If you are gonna watch this show ever DO NOT come in here right now!" 😂 I got to the end of season 3 before she decided to give it a go, I paused at the end of 3 and rewatched it from the beginning with her so we could both see what happens after season 3 lol.
My dad was telling me for months that I HAVE to watch this show. It wasn't until I was sitting and binging all the way to season 3 with my jaw dropping further and further like WHAT??? It's soo good. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
Beautiful reaction to a beautiful episode. The writers took their time with fifteen episodes to build this moment. I've lost count how many times I've watched this.... it still gets to me. What an amazingly written, directed, acted show! Dawes told Miller he hadn't lost everything, but when he did he would see what matters most, clearly for the first time and it would welcome him home. Miller told Naomi that he sees Julie and knows she isn't there but she takes his hand and says you belong with me. We all cried... but he finally found Julie. All I will say is this won't be the last time you will need tissues. Looking forward to the next one!
The focus on science, on physics, on understanding the way the grounded universe of the Expanse works... is so that when the Protomolecule starts ignoring the rules, you really understand just how terrifying it is for the cast. "Can you believe a guy like me would believe in something?" Damn, that line is heartbreaking. A would be tough guy, a hard-bitten noir detective, laying his heart open. Letting himself be vulnerable. Amazing writing, amazingly acted.
No matter how many times I watch this episode, the crew toasting Miller with his bottle of Ganymede Gin always hits me. Powerful episode and great reaction.
i love the idea that Proto-julie is confused and afraid when first talking to Miller, but when he takes of his helmet and 'joins' the protomolocule she becomes focused and calm, cos Miller is calm. she's using his strength in their final moments..
Yes, crying along with you as this is such a beautiful episode. Miller found his way home with Julie. Avasarala defended her home the best she could. The Roci crew were ready to sacrifice their home to save Earth. So much heroism. And I loved that the bird affected you too. For whatever reason, the protomolecule likes the bird, an ancient species related to the dinosaurs, and seems to use it for some type of non verbal communication. I always found that profound and beautiful even if I could not understand it.
I think the bird was like a signal between Miller and Julie. I always thought that the proto-molecule had some quality or trait that existed outside of time. Julie saw an image of Miller and the bird as she was dying, even tho she'd never met him. Miller saw flashes of Julie after he got irradiated on eros, even tho he never met her. He told Naomi that he saw her clearly, taking his hand and telling him 'you belong with me' which happened in the end. And they were both eventually infected by it, tho at different times. It's like their fates were somehow intertwined by the PM. Like the universe was telling each of them that they would meet and they would need each other.
That is gorgeous. I think it affected me mostly because I grew up believing birds were deceased loved ones coming to check on us and protect us. Little signs that they're still around, and that you're on the right path. But now I'm crying again thinking about the protomolecule using the bird image for guidance.
This episode was the one that confirmed for myself that this show, regardless of genre, is/was imo the single greatest tv-series that I've ever seen, (and I've seen a boatload of tv shows over the years), . Even if your not a hardcore fan of sci-fi like myself, this series the very least should be considered the best sci-fi tv-show ever made. Great reaction!!
It's unbelievable how terrific the authors write. With Julie, they created a character that was hardly shown and left such a massive impression that I was in tears. It was over with me when this incredibly strong personality said that she was just going home. How tragic is that?
"What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls a butterfly" is a quote from the Richard Bach book "Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah". In the book it's attributed to a fictional book of maxims called The Messiah's Handbook. It's basically about putting faith in something greater than yourself and hoping everything will work out, even if you can't see it. It's not really clear if Estabon is being sincere or sarcastic imo.
Yooo! I love Richard Bach! JLS is one of my favorite books ever and the reluctant messiah is so full of great maxims, didn’t catch that reference, thank you for pointing it out!!
It also relates directly to the theme of metamorphosis, which is central to the protomolecule, and to what Cortazar has been talking about when he goes on about "becoming."
I Have watched all seasons of this great show countless times and seeing this episode and your reaction to it makes me wabt to start it over again. Did you ever imagine when you began watching this you would be on a ride this powerful?
Hoo boy, this show is just getting started! There is SO much crazy shit to come! Can't wait to see you continue going on this journey!!! Oh, and the books are AMAZING. You should absolutely read them! I'm on my second read-through of them currently and enjoying them more than my first!
One of my favorite little 'actions' in the entire series is when Errinwright smacks that little comm unit on his desk across the room. It never stops being funny.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us Mage. The power of good can bring "home" even fallen tragic figures like Miller. Him and Julie needed each other from the get go, to complete each other (well, mostly Miller) and to get the job done of saving Billions.
I watched the first season, LOVED it, then read the first book and ABSOLUTELY loved it. In the end I had to put the books down and finish the show so the books didnt ruin the show for me. This is a top 10 show for me. And the books, for me, are even better. The way they describe the protomolecule and eros in the book is soo cool and creepy. Anyway, I'm rambling. Love your stuff Meg!
The way this show can have you on the edge of your seat one moment, and in tears in other moments, is proof that this show absolutely deserves an Emmy Award!! Maybe even two or three of them. Always have some tissue near by. There are many more episodes that will have you in tears. It is my opinion that a true Hero, dies willingly to save everyone else. Miller is a True Hero in my mind. Miller's story arc was just fantastic.
The psudo-gravity on Eros is only 1/3rd G, a comfortable gravity for Belters. Similar on Ceres. As Miller is a belter, from Ceres, the gravity on Eros feels normal to him.
Yes, just think about it, when they burn with 15 G, that's 15x the comfortable gravity for Holden and Amos, but 45x for Naomi and Alex. How they could even survive this is astonishing.
@@VoodooMcVeeyeah my only real gripe I have with this future is that the Belters are pictured as the real badasses of space and I am like bruh they start with a very serious disadvantage when it comes to going even a bit faster with your ship
Three things stand out to me when I watched this episode. One the bird. Have you ever read the poem Ode to a Nightengale by John Keats? The bird guides the seeker to his beloved. And for the journey love alters the poet permanently. The second is Miller fed Julie the nuke. If you notice she got a lot stronger after he did that and the nuke shut down. He earned her trust. The kiss was completely unscripted. I think Florence Faivre (Julie) talked to Thomas Jane and she initiated that. Last the scene with Christian and her husband got me more than the Julie/Miller scene. The idea that you’ve built your life with someone and now you have to watch them die. Thanks
Reactions are so interesting, especially to a show like this one. Each episode holds up another ink blot and the reactions reveal so much. Great material for psychology students.
This episode was so beautiful. ❤ I know it's sad. I also feel like it's a love story. The protomolecule connected with humanity, it reflected the beauty and love of humanity back at it. It was also wonderful that Miller was able to come back for Julie in this way when she'd been left all alone. I'm sad that real Julie died alone.
After s01e08, after all this suspense to find Julie, and we just find her dead… it was gut wrenching. I was so sad and confused and wondering where this series was going to go. Then this episode amazed me. Their persons weren’t saved, but they were saved/redeemed in a way that up for s01e08. This is ONE of my favorite episodes. Don’t worry, more will come. And we don’t tell you when! 😅
This shit had me sitting in my room in silence at 4am on a college night just starting at the screen dead eyed after the credits. Probably one of the best sci-fi media ever to exist

Eros hitting Earth would have almost certainly set off the near destruction of humanity. There would likely be just enough stuff out on Mars and the floating in the Belt that they could scrape together some kind of ecosystem but that's assuming Mars could get along with the Belters long enough to do even that.
Miller and Julie were connected through the protomolecule the connection went backwards through time Julie saw miller at the moment of her death as she became one with the protomolecule and from that point on Miller kept seeing Julie as he was connected to her and he saw the moment where they met in a dream he told Naomi how she held him and said you belong with me.
Also, as for reading the book, you may not want to start reading yet. I think most will say once you finish book 2 in the show, then it’s a good time to start book 1. It’s just season 1 is kinda sorta a blend of the first two books. I don’t want to say more than that.
For sure if someone wants no show spoilers the books probably should come a few season behind. For me I wasn't as worried so between season 1 and 2 I read everything that had been published to that point, and so I had some ideas what Season 2 had in store but it was still awesome.
