Restoration videos of any sort are entertaining. I love watching other people spend their money and turning a sow's ear into a silk purse. As long as they finish the project. I hate investing months then watching the person give up.

To call that engine weird was an understatement. It's more of a Frankenstein engine. Ford steel bigblock head on an Aluminum block. Thats trouble right there. Many known inherent problems with that engine and it's no longer supported by Mercruiser--parts are hard to find. Use the larger 4 inch heat exchanges, engine is prone to overheat. Careful with the cam seals in the front, prone to leak. The one I owned produced great torque and power and got 4 cylinder gas mileage. Good luck with the boat.

People who say that don't understand boat ownership. Boats require constant maintenance, upkeep, and modification. In Wizards case that's just as much fun as using the boat. Even more of a reward cuz you did it yourself. If you buy a boat thinking your going to use and abuse it with no upkeep you will learn real quick. Which is what I suspect the previous owner learned.

Half of Ford 460, Mercruiser used to design and cast their own engine blocks before the went with GM blocks. Camshaft driven engine coolant circulation impeller. If you see coolant weeping from housing seals have failed and it will groove camshaft end. We used to speedi-sleeve them back in the day otherwise you will have to change cam out which is probably NLA.

We have almost exactly the same boat (montego versus santego). We love it, great craft. Very well made.
    Things to look out for:
    1. Alternators are a really weird design off the crank pulley. Convert to standard delco alternators
    2. Water pump is driven off the camshaft. The cam seals wear out and cause leaks, front cover has to come off and put sleeves on the camshaft where the seals ride.
    3. The drives will need the impeller replaced. Check the drive bellows and prolly plan on replacing as well. Inspect the gimbal bearing while it’s out.
    4. I converted the distributor to electronic ignition to get rid of points and condenser. Hotspark.com
The 3.7L 4-banger is a great engine. They get a lot of flack.
For a boat that big you’ll want to make sure the trim tabs work properly. It will really help with planing.

Replace them before they sink you. Make sure the outdrive boots are newer and not cracked or they will sink you. Make sure the bilge pump‘s are actually pumping water and not just making noise or they will sink you. Fyi... smooth bore bilge pump hose will move more water than corrugated hose. Good luck with her!

Those are also know as 170, or 470. The biggest piece of shit mercruiser ever put out. They had the blocks machined, used ford head and internals. Closed cooling, no alternator, stator instead.
I know in the past mercruiser was offering a bounty on these blocks for rebuilding because they aren’t made anymore. I worked in the marine service industry and whenever these has a motor problem, we would always suggest repowering with a Chevy motor, and sell the block to mercruiser. Never had a customer that did the repower regret it. Either the stators or closed cooling were always problematic.
Nice 1989 boat, just shitty engines.

This boat project is different because husband and wife are both in favor of it and will work on it together. Also they have indoor storage for it already, so winter is covered. So many boat owners bail because they never ran the numbers and / or the spouse hates it. Also, if you can't do a lot of stuff yourself and have to hire people and / or don't enjoy working on your boat then don't even think about it. Just rent a boat once in a while. Or make friends with people who own boats. Also some marinas can start to feel like a trailer park, which may or may not be your thing. And some people just plain get seasick and don't like being on the water as much as they thought they would.

I used to work for Carver Boat Corp. back in the late 80s and this was probably the boat I helped build or polished the stainless steel rails on it,i,m not sure as I was being shuffled around to various jobs at the company. But trust me,the 27 Santego is a good cruiser to own and enjoy. It,s sad that the previous owner of the boat he got it from never took any good care of it. When you own a boat like this or any cruiser or motoryacht, you have to have the will, ambition and drive and money to take care of it if you want good retail value out of it. You have to keep them clean, which is a constant chore, and make sure the engines are well maintained and all the mechanicals are in good working order. A good boat to have but the previous owner didn,t seemed to give a shit about keeper this Carver in good shape which now is going to cost a lot of money to fix up. Is it worth it?

That boat isn't that bad. As a guy with 30 years in the boat repair/detailing business in SW Florida, that thing can be made into a creampuff for relatively little, if you know what your doing.
Those engines tho.......That's what really kills the resale, and desireability of this particular boat. I'd repower with small block Chevy v-8. Mr Wizard may find the cost of doing that VS. rebuilding those 3.7's to be remarkably similar. The outdrives should bolt right up.

I owned a Carver Santego 27 for 5 years and it's a very rugged boat. Built like a tank. My boat had the optional Chevy V-6 engines producing 205 hp each. That's why your boat has Chevy bell housings, with adapter plates for the 4-cylinders. You will find that this boat is so heavy that 340hp will not put her up on plane without a struggle, but you can re-prop the boat. BTW, the leading cause of failure of the Ford/Mercruiser engine is rotted and clogged risers which caused overheating and blown head gaskets. New risers are a must.

@@TheNortheastAl Same here. I got burnt as well a few times. The salt water eventually eats at everything. It's a constant upkeep. I live in Florida and my family has always been into boats, from a 21 foot Boston Whaler and Donzi to a 32 foot Trojan and Riva to a 44 foot sailing Swan boat and, for a short time, even a 60 foot Hatteras. Maybe the maintenance on a boat may be more affordable if is only in fresh water. But, I don't know by how much. I think that if you are going to buy a boat, buy a small one with outboard engines and center console that you can pull out of the water with a trailer and hose down and keep in a garage. Because, the humidity and the salt will eventually destroy everything, and I mean everything.

Mercury only used them for a couple years because of the issues. Most famous of which, is the water pump failure, then the head gasket blows and cooks the engine. Between the block and the head are two dissimilar metals. They just don’t usually recover after that. Most guys pull them and stick in 3.0 gm engines. Same engine mount pattern and don’t usually need to change the gear ratio.

Same as plumbing. I split a hose on mine, $120 at the marine store, $14 at the plumbing store..it's the exact same thing!
Same as rope. Mine was grey and white (similar to wizard's) and I wanted all black lines. $400 for 6 at the marine store. $150 for a 400 ft roll at the hardware store. I bought the fid to put the eyes on the ends myself. I sat there one saturday afternoon doing them. You should have SEEN all the other boaters sitting around watching me. Once they figured out I could do it, next thing you know they're coming to me when they replaced their lines. I made about $1000 that summer making new mooring lines for people.
