Another great video thanks.
I felt this in my soul. I am a mobile mechanic in Detroit and so far I've covered a good 45% of wayne county. I show up with a uniformed shirt with my name and ASE patch on my sleeve. Shitty customers, underbidding certain jobs, etc all comes into play. I also dont really like doing jobs for friends & family.
Shit im not ase certified . I'm youtube certified lol i might get me a patch. I wonder if people treat you better when your wearing your setup. You should do both
Doing jobs for friends and family will definetly cause most people to take massive losses however luckily all my friends and family look at it the same way I do……….. for example my guy Steven rebuilds transmissions on the side and like an actual shop he charges x amount per hour for labor according to Alldata when I needed my transmission done I call him up cause he’s my buddy but I don’t expect a discount matter of fact first thing I ask him is ay what’s your going labor rate he tells me and I say aight bet do mine………. Im not asking my buddy to help me out with a buddy discount m. Im going. To pay him his full price because If im going to have to pay someone to do the repairs Imma pay my people to to do it 🤷🏼♂️
I prefer to work for my Friends and Family. They usually give more than I ask. Its everyone else that thinks they can negotiate.
Sometimes, I wish my family would come to me first to show them before just going to the dealer and spending too much at repairs that I could easily knock out in 30 min to an hour. My Dad went to the Ford dealer to get his windshield washer fluid tank and pump replaced(2014 Ford F150 Ecoboost) because it was leaking. They were going to charge him over $400 for the parts and labor. Thank goodness he called me and told me. I found the new OEM pump and tank online for less than $100. BTW I told my Dad he should have bought the 5.0 instead of the 3.5 Ecoboost, but he wanted better gas mileage. Oh well I tried lol.
I feel your pain people friends f4mily who need to be really greatful for the helping them save money or serious repairs shops really put a hurting on your funds rs
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences.
My pleasure!
I love this guy I’m just starting off this side business!
Good luck brother. You will do great things
"2lbs of pressure" is exactly my thought process.
Damm right
Nothings worse than a customer standing over your shoulder asking you about every last thing you touch
Good advice.
I was writing down struggles mobile mechanics go through but man I need more paper 😂 #8 described me and I don't even work on the business!! LOL.
On a real note, Amazing value what you provide here to mechanics in this market, I gathered a lot of insights from this video to give valuable help to mobile mechanics, definitely recommend. Thanks Thomas!!
Everything you said is 100% correct! Another thing I would add is not everyone can just become a mobile mechanic out of thin air because they fixed they’re own brakes in their backyard. If you haven’t got shop experience and don’t know how things are ran or working with customers in this field, then you shouldn’t become a mobile mechanic. I’ve been in many different shops over the past 10 years before I left my job to start my own company. And so far it’s been going great. Still have weeks that are slow but that’s inevitable. And weather is DEFINITELY your #1 enemy out there. Summer time is very harsh.
Starting a Mobile Tire Business. I do every tire there is under the sun from loaders, semi, lockrings, lawnmower, forklift, grader, tractor, implement, even did a few airplane tires in the past. I don’t think these are reasons not to be a mobile mechanic,I think these are obstacles you’d run into as a mobile mechanic. God bless you man.
What’s up man great video. I want to know how do you charge to travel to jobs sites and me being in New York how would you suggest charging for poor weather conditions?
If you come to my house, you're treated with respect, have an indoor space available with a 2 post 8000 lb lift to use. 180 psi air pressure too.
I work at night and sleep all day.
Tell me how much, I pay, and let yourself out when you're done and I'll see you next time.
I need to be your mechanic or have your money or both
Bro you aren't kidding, I'm looking for a short on an old crv right now, I found the wiring diagrams for the particular circuit, its about 20 pages long.
I ilike the way you don't try and sugar coat anything you tell it like it is, that is the kind of man i like to be around.
Awesome man love the content just got my LLC approved in Michigan progress rolling
Im proud of ya ma keep me updated
I own the travelling mechanic here in Vancouver BC canada and i have had guns pulled on me. People have tryed to rob me etc..thos video is very true
Your best video yet. Great job continuing to up your game and content. You have an excellent grasp on the struggle. I would only add #11. You sort of mentioned it, but for me this one is important. Just had an issue yesterday. 11. There is nobody to cover you when you make a mistake. You have to own it and eat it. SFMF
Thank you brother that surely means alot to mean SFMF
U right bro I'm a mobile mechanic down jacksonville nc people are people
honestly i want a colorado like that one in the video how is the maintnance????
I just moved to ohio and ive thought about doing this for years. I was a mobile mech in the late 90s for a petroleum transport company, and i can work on cars etc, but i really have no idea where to start.
Thank you Thomas, I have a shop at home and have been thinking about venturing out, this will be a great watch. Love your content !
Is that your full time job. How busy are you and is it a small garage
@@semperfimechanic Yes I have a tire machine balancer 1 hoist 46x60 shop. I have it divided in half so heat and AC is nice in the Wi summers and it is just me. I am busy all the time. I am a single dad 100% and my customers are flexible so for that I am so grateful. The hustle has to be there all the time as you show us!
Love the video brother. Straight shooter with a humble big heart. God bless you and your family.
Thank you man this means awful lot
Kinda what I expected. I'm happy enough to deal with customers in my line of work specific to my industry. But general public? I don't know if i could do it. Especially if everyone has a sob story. Keep on keeping on. Thanks for the video.
Yea its very hard especially when your a decent human being because everyday you find yourself feeling bad for someone
I was taught that your balls are for business and your heart is for friends and family.
Facts
That’s right.
Another great vid man, this channel needs to blow up, you talking the real talk and more people need to hear it, my old man’s a heavy duty diesel mechanic out in the field no fancy shop to work in out in the elements that makes that job way harder, so you got my respect. Have a good one !
Thank you brother this means alot to me. And i hope the channrl blows up to a little
What app do you advertise on because Craigslist does not work
Google my business site
You opened my eyes to a lot of things. Thank you!
I'm still gonna go for it, that's probably because I'm also a crazy veteran 😊
I have been a mobile mechanic for a year now. It's pretty badass. I can fix anything with nuts and bolts. I should of started right after high school. everything you mention in this video is true. Keep it coming.
Im proud of ya man you are doing more then most
Amen brother, im a mobile mechanic in michigan, you really tipped off some great points, people don't understand the struggle, I work extremely long hours every day or I fall behind on my work, usually about 6 or 7am to 10pm or later depending, ive been blessed and have only had a few bad customers so far and 43 5star ratings.
Thank you for making this video so people can possibly see what we go through.
I wish you well my friend and hope you are blessed every day to have good and safe days.
Brother Im proud of you man and just keep doing it. We know how bad it can get
I love watching your channel. Been watching for a while. 1st time commenting. You’re a cool dude man! Keep up the videos!!!!
Thank you brother that means alot man and I hope you comment more often
All true... Many single mom customers complain about being broke.... Totally avoidable, being in that situation. Most have cigg buts/vape cartridges/empty Starbuck cups scattered about the interior. EBT & the baby daddies can step up...
Because ppl automatically assume that because you’re not a brick and mortar shop you aren’t worthy of the same respect/labor rates. So they want you to do a $800 job for $150 ..
Your absolutely right about that
That’s what I deal with as a mobile mechanic
You’re exactly right. And they want you to do leg work (run back and forth from parts stores) and pay for the parts up front. 99% of the time the people don’t have the money for the repairs to begin with. If I sense even an inkling of that cheap-ass-ed-ness I pull the plug right away. So I basically do almost none of that type work.
@@drew5992really? Don’t you hate that they suck
@@drew5992I’m a mobile mechanic
As a fellow mobile mechanic, I can vouch that this is all 100% true!
Great video again brother
Well said buddy
Bro spoke facts 👊🏼
I hear ya brother, my biggest thing is number 9.❤
My best friends are from Columbus. I think a lot of these issues come from the amount of drug use.
Hey Thomas, thanks for the great content! You are pretty much correct on all counts and as a automotive and diesel technician for over
35 years, ive seen and experienced lots of scenarios while driving service truck and doing on site repairs, towing, road service etc and you definitely have to have or grow some balls dealing with the general public as you will definitely run into all kinds of people that expect you to work for free and they don't give a fuk whether you can feed your family or not!
🇺🇲✌️
Thank you boss this means the world to me.
I've been a mobile mechanic for a long time where's the best place to advertise....
imagine drivin a 95 caprice with a attitude like dont mess up my distributor optispark😂🤣😅 no manners
Your videos are getting pretty dam good bro 🤙🏽
I started up my mobile mechanic gig last year after watching your videos.
Sadly, I had to put it on pause about a month after starting due to surgeries but I'll be getting it going again this month 👌🏽
Keep the videos coming
Thank you man and i hope you get back out there
good shit thomas.. even with me getting everything setup legally, marketing and all that you made some real decent points i didn't think about. I did fleet work and emergency mobile service for a trucking company for years so i'm no stranger to the idea of people treating you like shit, gotta give a few kind words and don't let them push ya around or try to take advantage of you. very good points none the less. thanks!
What kind of work do you do know. Im thinking about trying to get into fleet work
@@semperfimechanic I was a fleet mechanic for a local trucking company for 10 years repairing tractor and trailers. I moved to working on garbage trucks for almost 2 years learning hyd systems and dealing with the nastiness with all that for 28 an hour in Chicago. Then moved to heavy equipment for an asphalt company but was laid off during Covid that was 45 an hour with union benefits..
then got a job managing over the road driver shop but sustained an injury that put me out for 9 months with surgery, got back into the workforce back into garbage truck and sewer truck repair and had enough and quit to follow a mobile mechanics business after landing some money after the injury from workman’s comp which is assisting in the start up which is very minimal because I already own 3 toolboxes filled with tools I got over the years of being a fleet and refuse mechanic
My advice to you is, being a fleet mechanic has its benefits. I loved it with refuse as we had a 200 plus fleet of trucks to always repair. My supervisor would get the dvirs from the drivers assign us work we would go get the truck pull it in the shop and get to work. Depending on the industry you’ll be putting in stupid hours. Refuse I put in 13 to 15 hours a day 6 days a week because garbage trucks always have to roll. Anymore questions DM me brother!
Biggest thing that I’m worried about is 7 what do I do when they don’t want to pay. And also what legal paperwork is required after the job
I've had it happen and I've pulled important fuses and literally drop the keys in my shirt pocket and leave. People are sneaky though. They find a way to steal. The legal route is a mechanics lean so the title can't be transferred without the debt being paid. It's quite the process and not worth the effort most of the time
Dude , anyone with the balls to work on any vehicle on I 95 or I 40 in N.C. has my respect !
Amen to that
I lose more $ because I can’t not help a lot of people, i try to help out when I can, but it seems like I lose more $ than I make helping people, my wife gets so pissed at me
It's tough having a heart in this biz
@@semperfimechanic Yes it is, it’s tough having a heart period these days
i was expecting more specific scenarios... reasons were too broad and vague
Right on! 😂😂😂
People tend to forget the headaches that come with any business. This one is no different
There is s reason most samall businesses fail
Love your videos brother, great content.
Thank you brother that awesome to hear
Love your perspectives! Ive worked from my home garage on cars for people for extra cash over the years and sometimes when between day jobs. Its a tough gig. I have people drive or tow their cars to me so i dont have to work out in the weather unless i want to. Hate to say i think id probably stereotype people. If someone looked like they couldnt pay id skip the job.
You can normally tell on the phone call. I'll ball park high to make sure im covered and feel out the conversation
He’s eliminating any possibility of competition LOL
That's good 😅
I worked part-time as a parts sales rep at Advance Auto Parts when I was starting off as a TOYOTA Tech. There Alot of asshole cheap ass customers. Even at our location, it was a nicer area. People want YOU to fix their car for free, basically. 15-year-old Mercedes part costs $500. The customer pissed off, saying it shouldn't cost that much. I explained to them that a Mercedes Benz AMG cost $60k to $80k new. So what that it's a cheap POS now. It's still expensive to fix. I could not imagine having to deal with that on a daily basis. It wasn't worth it. Commercial accounts were bad, too. They want the "I'm special / your friend hook up prices," especially for parts that will cost $$$$ but want it $ and delivered in 5 min.
Every single thing you said was exactly right
MY ADVICE TO EVERYONE WHO LOVES WHAT THEY DO BE THE MOST EXPENSIVE IN YOUR INDUSTRY PERIOD. BUT YOU MUST BE THE VERY VERY BEST DON'T FOCUS ON THE MONEY FOCUS ON YOUR WORKMANSHIP THE MONEY WILL FOLLOW FACTS!!!. YOU CREATE BAD CUSTOMERS WHEN YOU BECOME COMPETITIVE. MASTER YOU YOUR PASSION AND EVOLVE OR YOU WILL DISSOLVE. THANK YOU FOR ALL THESE VIDEOS.
So much truth!!! Love this episode
Thank you brother means alot to me
Kudos my brother you've come along way and unfortunately in this time and age there's always going to be a floaters in the punch bowl much respect to you I've done it all my life as soon as you thought you seen it all one pops up better then the last just keep keeping on. Proud of you man.
Thank you bruv that means the world to me
Sup Thomas! Just checking in lol. I been around, busy...but still here showing you love man. Keep up the great work. Cheers from Boston
I'll give you 20 why you shouldn't never go in debt to Snap-On, Mac, Cornwell, your mother-in-law lol It's Rough mixing grease with your BLOOD..lol
Yea im lucky there. I dont have expensive tools and the stuff I do have is mostly donated by my great subscribers. First off if you drive a truck like me as a mobile mechanic you can only so much in there

Ive done a solo housecleaning business off and on for a few years now and most of these would apply to that as well. Right now im just door dashing after covid shut me down and a move to Colorado. Thinking about getting back into the housecleaning because it does pay better, but finding people that arent nuts or cheap is a challenge.
Yea I can see how its same in alot of areas

Number 9..... I got stories about number 9. 2 recent ones, My Fiancée passes away and I am grieving, posting on FB about it. A customer goes on my personal page complaining about his car and why he doesnt have it back yet. Dude still owed me money and thought he could complain and Sue (he Lost) his way out of it. 2nd Customers car catches fire at my shop as they drive it in for service. It was very difficult to find replacement parts for this fire damaged vehicle and I had mt Fiancées funeral to go to. This chick tells my mechanic she don't care about my fiancée, she just wants her car back after being at my shop with FIRE damage for a week and a half. I gave her money back and told her good luck!
Sorry for your loss my friend. May God give you peace and understanding.
@@Satchero Thank you and bless you as well!
I’m glad I don’t do this job in America. I’m from the UK and the worse thing us mobile mechanics have to deal with is the weather, always fricking raining and cold.
AMEN!!! I agree with 100% of this
You started talking about safety and I knew for a fact guns were gonna get mentioned. Thanks for not disappointing. Stay Free, -P6
I don't really have the disrespect problem, but I am the guy the dealership calls when they can't figure it out. They are happy when I show up, because the know they will get a confirmed diagnosis when I leave and I will be right 99.9% of the time and I will pay for the repair if I was wrong. And I work on a ton of cars that people have spent $1000's of dollars trying to fix at other shops that throw parts at them. I had one towed over to my house today. I will have a video up on it soon. The other shop said they said needed a whole new engine, and a bunch of other stuff. Said the engine was locked up and wouldn't let the leave with the car, because It wasn't safe to drive.... It just needs a new water pump. I save my customers a lot of money. Most of my customers are regular repeat customers. I take on a very limited amount of new customers. The big one is Garage Keepers Insurance. You need it if you are going to take customers cars on test drives. I have built my business very slowly over time, over the last 10 years, and I work a full time 8-5 and just work on the evenings and weekends. I carry a gun, keep a SBR in my vehicle, carry pepper spray and have a few stun guns staged around. I have never had to use them again a person, but I have had to shoot a pit bull and pepper spray a few dogs.
U r right
If you can make 100 gs a year it’s worth it
Yea that would be but thats an awful lot. Not sure if thats possible for me
Good video an ima say I don't wanna be a mobile mechanic after this id rather just make good money working under a guy thanks dude
Everyone knows the good things about being a Mobile mechanic, but not too many know the bad side of it

Can you make a video on 10 reason to be mobile mechanic

In about a month from now, we should live stream a zoom and compare notes. Maybe bring in another mobile mechanic so you both can laugh at my new adventures, ha!
Im excited for ya brother, you will do great what city and state are you working out of
@@semperfimechanic Based out of my residence in Crystal Springs, MS. But I'm making myself available to pretty much everywhere from Jackson to the Gulf Coast.
Except for downtown Jackson. I don't have enough guns to make me feel safe there. Will do roadside on the freeways, but to hell with the rest.
Ive been in business now for 6 months. i related to everything you just said. Too bad im a felon so ill have to pack a black powder muzzle loader lol
