I love the Zing woods. Ping was known for their utilitarian "function over form" approach to club design. After 2 generations of laminate woods Ping added a little flagrant style to the Zing woods with that big bold toe decal and the option of the blonde finish. Stunning woods if you ask me.

I have a set of PING ZING 1,3, & 5 Woods in Blonde finish with KT-M Steel shafts with Avon Chamois Grips a very soft grip. The Spalding Executive woods circa 1977 also a laminate have an unconventional shape as well. Great video on a great driver, thanks VG. Geoff.

I find these for $2 sometimes. I do like my old ping. Love my Powerbilt persimmon.

I still have a Powerbilt persimmon in the queue. Great persimmons!

@@TheVintageGolfer it’s a shame what happened to the brand. I reshafted some irons from 1983. Momentum blades.

I had the ping eye 2 wooden woods and then the ping zing 1,3, and 5 woods still have the zing 3 and 5. Loved these clubs still take them out to the range from time to time. would maybe still game the 5 wood.

In the early 1990's, I began playing the Taylormade System 2 Drivers, the first an 8.5 degree with a Royal Precision 7.5 steel shaft at 43.5" and a year later a 9.5 degree with my first graphite shaft, a True Temper EI-70 x-flex at 44.25". That 9.5 graphite shafted driver was just incredible for its day - it was the first driver that, when struck well, gave me 300 yards of carry.

I love this driver and still play them. I could go longer with newer clubs but I just love the feel.

Could you look at some persimmon woods? I watched a Lee Trevino video where he was demonstrating his 6 wood out of the rough and his argument was that the incredibly wide shaped hosel is what allows it to glide through so easily. I’ve been looking at a Ping ICI ever since!

John---It's kinda different in a way your results on the range you said were around 200 yards into a bit of a breeze but on simulator you were ave. 225 yards. That's what I have seen outdoor real golf vs. indoor simulator golf. Same results on average. It's why I don't put much validity into simulator numbers when purchasing new equipment. Simulator = marketing. 😄 Scott

I’ve been to a track man outdoor range. The track man was saying I was hitting it 285+, but the balls were only getting to the 250 marker. Lol.

I'd heard that the head volume was a little larger than usual on these, do you know what it is?

@ng8981 I have a Ping Zing driver and guessing around 250ish cc volume. Majority of older persimmon that John has used on his YT channel are in the 195cc area. Thing to remember is most older persimmon and laminated maple especially with steel shafts are 43.50" playing length much closer to ball than the 460cc modern metal heads that are 45"+ playing length.

Ping was able to perfect the laminate club head in the 70s and 80s and because of it's low slung, wide body shape it swung a lot easier for it's size than an oversized persimmon or laminate from other manufacturers. They were able to make them larger still because of their process. I have and game the Eye 2 woods and I estimate the driver to be 235 ish cc. Not bad for 1985.

Not that different than Wilson Staff's from the '70's...my first real set. It's still, 85-90% the golfer and 10-15% the club...
