After working with herding mixes all my life, I have found myself with a whippet puppy. Ya...a whippet. I've gone from "work, work, work to please my mom" to utter indifference about working with me. Sure, he loves to snuggle, but he has no stamina for learning. Needless to say, I am now learning how spoiled I was with "easy dogs" and I'm learning a lot about Whippets. I stumbled on your video after searching for engagement ideas. WOW! What a difference! I watched the engagement part, the auto sit part , and then find my face. I grabbed my boy's lunch and headed to the dog room to try it out. GAME CHANGER!! In just a few minutes, my boy was dashing to me for that treat. He figured out auto sit really fast, and even stayed engaged for a little Find my Face. While I didn't remember to use some variant energy, I will definitely keep that in mind once I get more engagement from puppy. I am so happy now that I have some tools that I can use to work with this dude. I'm looking forward to building a great relationship with him. I love this. I'm a ff trainer and was struggling with a very low drive, zero focus shepherd. You got my Juju up and with just the change of my games into moving the dog into me. Man. Genius. Just one correction. Most human communication is also nonverbal. It's amazing how little communication is actually done through speech itself between people. Most of the time it's body language, sound inflection or deflection, and more.

I currently have four. They sometimes get kind of pushy when we're interacting with another, but it's manageable and we just make sure to give good feedback, and lots of opportunities for one-on-one time.

I really like your methods of training a lot of your ideas are fresh, I'm old-school training and so these methods I am really eager to go ahead and share these along with my old school methods because they work I like sharing them with my friends who have young dogs -- puppies and using them with my puppy and intermingling them. I just recently found your videos. I have been around dogs all my life and have some good skills with training. But you have given me the next level I have been looking for with my current dog Copo. FYI with great respect, this was a little too much info for me, I could have stopped at #2 variant energy and then picked up the last two in another show. I have a 9 week old puppy and he is quite the jumper and nibbler but 1hr of doing the "Auch" training in conjunction with variant energy already got him understanding! Can you share how you recommend to prime a continuation marker as one of the first things a puppy learns, even before there is a sit? I would like to focus on my continuation and terminal on my BC 12 weeks at the same time and finding challenges on scenarios to anchor the YES (puppy I like what you are doing please continue or wait for me to come to you to reward you).
Your YES strikes me as the Terminal marker as the dog is in movement. Did I misunderstand?
I would like to achieve a continuation marker (for me YES) with an implicit STAY. My terminal marker will be FREE.

i didn't know it was called engagement, but this is how i baby step into the idea of starting training. one dog i had was a 2 year old rescue, he was not potty trained, so he was a 2 year old puppy, couldn't touch his paws....training should start with engagement, baby step in to gauge your dog or puppy's receptive level...have subscribed and enjoying your videos. i want to expand my hand signals, i'm always interested in what other trainers have thought to use....perhaps you've already made that type of video, will look through your library of videos, thanks.

What do you think of biosensor or ENS training?
Love the video! How would you incorporate your way of presenting rewards with techniques such as shaping, where every point of progress is rewarded until the desired behavior is reached? Doesn't it make it more difficult to recognize progress if the dog is always moving to reach the reward?
Actually it's pretty easy. You just insert the extra steps before the END reward. I didn't talk about it in this particular video, but we also use a Duration Marker ("Good") specifically for shaping. When the duration marker is used, that's one of the rare occasions food is handed to the dog. This is how we get Stays, stationing behaviors, and other things we need to build with successive approximations. I also use it for "drip-feeding" to condition an attraction to a certain position such as a Heel-Sit, or hanging out on a station. Those are all inserted before the POP at the end with the end marker, "Yes." Shaping actually goes really quickly like this.😉

i like to use hand signals too, it is very helpful. now i'm training a border collie, they rate high on response to visual signals...so will be doing that. she does demand barking, 15 weeks old, so i do turn away from her and say nothing, she comes in front of me and does a beautiful sit, that's my on button !
Auto-Sits are really a super behavior to have. It just fills the vacuum of SO MANY annoying behaviors. It's rad. Good work!

I am looking to improve engagement when outside or in new places, as my 1yo shepherd tunes me out in those situations.
You start this video saying that these exercises should be done in a neutral environment. When the dog excels in a neutral space, would you then continue to do these exercises in progressively more distracting environments?
Hi Sebastian. Yes, that's usually how we do it: as I mentioned in the stream, most dogs feel like this is play, so we can use this in new places to kind of activate their attention. It also helps condition them to view new environments as interesting opportunities for reinforcement-that's a huge confidence builder!

Generally with a puppy your primary concerns are: (1) Socialization, (2) ABI (bite force training), (3) Potty training, and then (4) Household manners. Usually things are in that order of priority. From there, you can also start training some of your basic skills and manners as soon as you get your puppy-Sit (esp. the Auto-Sits from this video), Leave It, some waits/stays, and getting them used to hardware like their leash and collar and harness and stuff. The rest kind of evolves organically as you co-habit together. Add-on other things as you discover a need for them.

These videos are the best. I'm going through like, ALL of them right now. We are about to bring home a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy. I'm a bit worried though: we want to crate train her, but we're not sure where she will sleep for the first few nights? Like... we can't just lock her in the crate without the positive reinforcement it takes to make her Want to go in it (which takes days-weeks)... do you have any advice?
You can have her in a crate the first night.
When working on sit stay and come how would you work on a dog sitting the whole time while you walk away because my pup just wants to follow me and I don't want to discourage the following but I do want to be able to call him to me and he comes if we are in a situation
I have a question, so I recently just purchased a dog, he is a lab male and about a 1 month old , should I try to train him or wait until he is about 2 months old ? I know his age is a bit too young but sadly that's just how it is around my country , even if he return him he will be just put back on sale :(

What are the treats you use at your center?
My main question is with regards to structured eating, and treats handed for successful completion of task/puzzle, does it not get to a point where a young small dog has been over fed? Is it best to keep track of how much is handed to keep in line with recommended daily intake?

Oh heck yeah. We do this stuff with all the puppies in the puppy classes. And I have lots of clients who've had dogs for years that come to us and we teach them this. It's like they awaken a whole new dimension to their relationship.

Hi! I got my American Bully XL yesterday. She’s only 8weeks old. What should I work on first and progress into. I know socialization is important but I want to get her started on training before she gets too old. I need help on where to start. Please help! I had a puppy before and didn’t know a thing. I’m still learning with my new puppy on how to raise her. I want to make sure this time I train my dog correctly.

How do you end a training session? I have a 3-year-old Pit Bull that I recently adopted. He is very high energy while training(gets the zoomies). I can see him getting frustrated when we are done or tired. He is very manipulative lol and It almost seems he does bad things cause he knows if he does a good thing after he will get a treat lol. Help! :)
Question: How do you avoid that this basic engagement exercise to "follow you" ends up sabotaging future attempts to teach "stay"? I'm thinking both the lesson to "torpedo" into your hand to get the food, and also the "follow me" exercise can create a dog that breaks a sit as soon as they hear "yes" or break a stay as soon as they hear "yes"? How would I avoid this? Hope you see this comment.
Hi Emmeline. Great question. We use our duration marker "Good" for those. When we ask for the Sit, we signal "Good" (instead of "Yes") which indicates the dog should "keep going." We ask for the Stay, and then we terminate the Stay with "YES!" which signals they can then move to us. We don't use a "release word" because "Yes" functions exactly the same way and it's superfluous in our system to have a separate release word; Yes already does that. Thus, we can easily build Stays where the dog comes to us, or we go back to the dog-either way "Stay" means "Remain in position until I tell you otherwise." The neat thing about this is that not only can we build stellar Stays, but we cross-train Come (Recall) at the same time.

This is awesome to start with a puppy. My only questions is would this create an anxious dog who needs to be with you all the time trying to figure out how to turn you on? Haha btw I have labs and got a chuckle out of the throwing the paw up, roll over etc.
Hi Ian. I’m in desperate need of some help and I watch you all the time so hopefully you or someone might be able to help me...I have a four month pomeranian puppy boy, my first dog. He absolutely hates being handled and panicks when I hold him to try to cut his nails, even just adjust his collar (he has an adaptil junior feromone necklace). I dont know what to do, he tries to bite me and squeels and try to get away. And this was just from trying to adjust his collar 😪 Should I keep going until i’m done and just let him have at it, or should I stop and try again later? I dont want to kill his trust in me. So I buckle under his antics and I feel like it gets worse every time, but all the advice I can find is to give him treats to distract/get him to calm down and associate with something positive, but it just doesnt happen and in the end I cant do anything to him. I feel like this is ruining our relationship and it breaks my heart. Please please please help us!

What about small dog and pups, are you always stand, and make them look so much up? I sit on the floor with those dogs, or it is not necessary?
I don't think it's necessary to sit on the floor. My Jack Russel is pretty small and he's pretty great with all of this, too.
Is there any reason to not try this engagement with a velcro dog? Our pit-mix rescue follows us everywhere, could it increase attachment? Is this something we would want to try later down the road instead?
It will increase attachment in some aspects, but the benefit of increased confidence will help them detach in the long run.

Simpawtico Dog Training ah I love it, thank you! I think I'll have to do some tweaking to my marker words. Sigh. I use "good" as a continuation marker -- he doesn't get rewarded then, but he will if he keeps holding that position. "Yes" is less about freeing a dog from a command and more "you get rewarded!!" "Free" let's him know he can get up. So for a sit stay for example, I ask him to sit. He sits. I take a step back. "Good." Another step back. "Good." And then "yes!" I undo the distance between us to reward him while he's still sitting. Then I let him break, and it starts all over again.
Yes meant rewards, not necessarily that he could break from position to come and GET the reward, ya know. For the first year of his life I knew next to nothing about communication and marker works and leash pressure and all that, so just now that we've got communication pretty solid, I'd hate to change it up and risk confusion in him, and ultimately distrust, which I've worked so hard to repair.
What is confusing to me is if I'm teaching "place", for example. I'd use "yes" a few times every few minutes and feed him for choosing to stay on place. "Yes" and then close the distance to reward.
If we did it where I'd say "yes" each time and Atlas bounds off place to come and get his reward, like you suggest, would this only reinforce that being OFF place is more rewarding than staying on it?

@@noahatlas5240 I'm not an expert, but I just watched one of his videos where he talks about duration. His reward style didn't change, but he did train the dog to extend duration. So teaching a dog to stay in "place" could still be rewarded his way with the dog moving and the dog seems to know that it was the patience/duration being rewarded, not the movement/break.

Hi! We have an 8 week old Cockapoo and this is our first time owning and training a dog. What do you do when the dog doesn't show interest when doing the engagement. Stop and try again later? or are there other tips you would suggest
Might be too early. Brand new puppies are kind of suppressed for the first few days-even the whole first week. Let them find their niche a little bit and adjust to the humongous change of leaving the litter and moving to (essentially) a foreign land, and then you should see much of those things start to move faster.

Could you let us know when the Jack Russell is due to appear? I really need help with mine; every time I think I'll have to give up he makes me fall in love again. The sweetest most communicative little guy, so protective and just loves me don't know why. But you must agree it's a very specific sort of personality. Toileting especially is still a mystery after 3 yrs.

one should be showing this with a new dog one for each stage
we are really struggling with recall with our 6 month old beagle. When he is called he will look for a treat in our hand and if he doesnt see it will not come and just ignore it completely.. maybe because he doesnt want to come inside or because whatever he is doing is more fun than listening. it is a challenge.
Recall is the most amazing, most safe, hardest and developed of all commands for me. Protect and respect it. Don't over come😂

Hey there. I think you're asking about the Modular Reward Events video that popped up while I was talking…? That's not necessarily a "reactive dog" video, per se, but understanding the principle will definitely help a lot. Quick question. What if your dog starts staring and sitting in front of you all day while doing chores or something. Do you engage with them every time? And if you don't, won't they unlearn the on button?
They can start doing that sometimes, but you can give them differential reinforcement-meaning you can reinforce/praise every instance you see, but not every single time gets the BIG rewards (like food, toys, play, etc.). Life and learning are all about navigating the "fuzzy" elements and learning how to apply what you've learned to different situations. Your dog will learn when it's going to be a good time to turn you on, and when it's less likely to work. You will also learn when they just want attention, or they need help.

Err, that’s because it’s an little 8 wk old puppy. It should still be with its mother surely, not being nagged for not ‘performing’ well enough for you?!

Basically, the principles stay the same. Customize a little for the age and ability of the dog, but the core stays the same.
