    I am a dog trainer and these little reminders are always nice. I'm really good at building engagement with dogs but helping and communicating how with owners has been an obstacle. So thank you for this!

    It makes SUCH a big difference to watch videos rather than read !!
    Then, I can use ear pods to listen while I try the exercise/game !

    Your videos are severely underrated. I wish I could train my dog in person with you. You're incredible 😊

    Thank you for this training exercise, I am looking forward to giving it a workout with my boxer pup. He is convinced that the entire world is more interesting than me at this point, especially around distraction. I can do this in my yard to help him learn. Also, your blog post have been the best dog training info I have found online. So much snake oil out there these days, your words have really impacted the way I behave with my pup, and how I approach his learning, and our journey as a team.

    After watching your 'long line training' video, it would be great to see how this game works with the long line and keeping the connection with the dog.

    Thank Meghan. I like the 1st game, but I do not encourage my dogs to ever eat food off the ground. That can encourage scavenger behavior, which I have found can be dangerous. If a treat falls to the ground, I say ‘dirty,’ give the dog one from my treat bag, and put the ‘dirty’ one off to the side. Scavenging can also cause a dogfight become distracted while on walks.

      The last sentence was auto corrected wrongly. I have found scavenging behavior can cause a dog to be distracted on walks.

      It's interesting that you bring this up - we actually use food toss games every day in our training and find that doing so decreases scavenging behavior rather than increases it :) It's perfect timing actually because I just made posts about why, and what types of things lead to scavenging behavior on my Instagram (and also on my Facebook) since many people are worried that using food tosses can cause scavenging behavior :)

    Hi, love the video. Question tho; what if at stage 1 when you turn your back your dog just sits down and stares at your back? (With a very judgemental look on her face, tho that could just be in my mind)

      @@madheadgamer9310 it's best if you ease them into new environments. Play the game often inside so your dog gets familiar with how it works. Next, try playing it in your yard and play often there. Then, rather than going to a new place, try playing down the street. I also find that parking lots are easy places to practice - no worries of dogs around, and fewer smells when working on pavement. The distractions are fewer, especially when you practice outside of business hours. Just be careful of cars and be sure to keep your dog on leash. Also, be sure to choose a higher value reward. Something like turkey or hot dogs tends to be extra enticing for many dogs :)

    What if the dog has NO food drive at all

    • @TheCollaredScholar
      @TheCollaredScholar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All dogs have food drive. If I have a dog that doesn't want to work for food, I work on building their motivation before starting this process. There are a couple articles on the topic on my website. :)
