I ordered this to net the algae in a large pond in our backyard. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxphFK7ETiDP5G4IGsNcg7vbASDp_YfDpI The net is very sturdy and easy to maneuver in the water. The angled edges make it easier to get into the smaller spaces among the rocks. I didn't realize that the front of the net doesn't actually have a frame to it, just the sides do, but it seems to work just fine. The handle extends to various sizes, which is a great feature when I'm in areas that are tight with shrubs at the edges of the pond. I can collapse the handle so it doesn't get stuck in the bushes.
Thanks for showing us this Roland. I have watched videos with all kinds of anglers telling me to spool label up, label down, set the spool vertically in a vice set-up and pull the line off the top and so on. In the olden days you could take your line and reel down to the bait shop and they would spool it for free.
Roland I've been watching you for 50 years, between you, Bill and Jimmy y'all were the pioneers of television fishing shows so SON you probably have forgot more about fishing than I will ever know . I might not be Granddad or Roland Martin but... I have had the BEST fishing using Algae formed into a ball around a bare hook than from ANY lure. FACT EDIT: Let me tell you how it works so you can see for yourself. Find a pond covered in algae. Take some and form it into a ball around a bare hook-Look Ma it's Weedless (No sinker and HEAVY LINE) Send that "Goo lure" out on top of the algae and Hop it across the surface of the algae...From the fish point of view it looks like a frog. The KEY thing to remember is to NOT stop hopping the goo lure UNTIL it hops onto the ground beside your feet!! >>> A 5 lb Bass EXPLODING at your toes is ALWAYS fun!! You can clean yer pants later.

This channel has taught me a lot, I actually never been fishing and took it up after I retired after 21 years in the military. Fishing is actually how I deal with my ptsd. I learned how to fish from trial and error....a lot more error than anything else. I learned a lot from this channel that I used when gone fishing. Didn't know you had to flip the line spool multiple times on spinning reels. I was taught to tie the line on the reel, reel 10 feet or so, put slack in line to see if it twists. If it does then flip over the spool of line and go for it. I've seen twists develop when filling the reel but thought I've turned it over so it must be right. Boy was I wrong!!!!!! Never too old to learn! Thank you Roland.

That beats how I do it. I fill the spool. Then go outside put the rod and reel down with an open bell. Pull all the line back off walking across the yard. (Usually my newbies yard too) Then go back to the reel and reel all the line back on. It works. But your way is simpler. Great video Mr. Martin. Keep them coming.
Take the lure off your line and let the line drag out 100 yards or so behind a slow moving boat for a minute. Pinch the line and reel it back in. It removes any twist. Walking across the yard works too but not as well as the boat thing. Just dont let another boat cross your line! Dont ask me how I know that.

At 57, I'm just starting to learn how to fish. On vacation in AZ last week, I finally caught my first Striper and a Large mouth bass. I'm learning I did everything WRONG! But still got lucky. I came to watch how to spool reels, and ended up learning I've been using my lines incorrectly. I didn't know that Florocarbon line sank...and that, understandably, effects the action of the lure. That matters in the skinny waters of the So. Texas Gulf. HUGE thank you, Mr Martin for sharing your brilliant nuggets of knowledge with us! Thank you so much Roland, I'm 31 years old and I've been fishing my whole life. I just put 15 lb fluorocarbon on my spinning reel, and twice now I've got knots in my line from casting. I just thought it was bad line, but now thanks to you I learned something I never knew existed. Thank you so so much. Wish I could give you a hug
I suggest you try watching Tactical Bassin as just one fishing channel run by expert bass fishermen and they TEACH. It never insist you do anything exactly how they each prefer. They respect other people’s ideas and fishing situations. I grew up watching a Roland and the others that made Bass fishing a Billion dollar business back in the 1970s. The only thing about Roland is that even though he has a championship fisherman, he only does what Roland feels is best. He doesn’t keep up with anything new. He doesn’t seem to watch other fishing channels to see what is new. I know all these things, but respect zroland for all he did long before many new fishing techniques ever were thought of and the thousands of new types of lures, etc. I don’t know why he doesn’t use a line spooling gadget instead of trying to watch for line twists, or use Crazy Glue on everything instead of electrical tape strip to keep braid from slipping, or use a bit of mono as backing which doesn’t slip when tight, then tie on the braid. I’m not bashing Roland or disrespecting him and his methods of doing whatever he is showing his viewers. He also loves Yamamoto 297 green pumpkin color for his senkos and Ned rigs. Where I fish the water is algae stained year round with less than 6” of visibility. So I use braid for nearly everything direct to anything I’m using. My situation is very unique where the water has so mich surface commotion from ducks and Mullet jumping, the a bass ignore all topwater baits I found out after spending a ton of money buying a few of every type of topwater from buzzbait to spook and thousands of hours learning to fish each one properly. Not a single follow, swirl, or blowup. I’d love to see ANY pro try fishing topwater where I am and see what happens. If the bass bite, then I’ll know for sure I’m doing something wrong and can learn to correct it. But even though I’m willing to pay a fair rate to have any pro level fisherman come here and fish just to see what I’m doing right/wrong and what results the pros might get. Best wishes to everyone.

Thanks for the refresher course (I've watched several). I've got 2 solid methods for spooling casting reels for big river fish and very recently realized it's been well over 20 years since a spooled a spinning reel. Ha, I'd forgotten completely! It's a challenge getting older, maybe some of those memory supplements from TV would help, lol! My baitfishing rigs are the cheapest of cheap spincasters and pretty dismal performance so I started shopping online. Shazzam! moment was to dig out my box of Zebcos and rebuild a 33 or two and in the corner of my garage sat my old favorite Smallie wading rig. A 1990's 7'ML Lightning Rod combo. Out of retirement, my new baitfish rig! Should be perfect for panfish and bullheads. 5:00PM now and by 5:45 I'll be on a local pond putting bait in a bucket. Thanks!

Never knew that about fluorocarbon line. I haven't been fishing in years, and I've never tried it. Nor have I fished with braided line. I have used spiderwire. I can't say that I liked spiderwire when I got snagged since it was 20lb. test. Now I like it. Least I know how to use it now/w a leader. I didn't know how to tie a knot in braided line, and I hadn't noticed how the line slips through the knot so easily. I snelled a few hooks with the braid using monofilament knots. That didn't work. I'm going to have to cut the snells off. I bought a spool if it recently. I watched your videos that showed me how to do the knot tying and a lot of other things. Thanks for everything.
Hi. Liam from Australia As you said that fluorocarbon and mono both have memory. Here we spool in the kitchen lol, we the boil water, pour the hot water into a sauce pan, then drop the spool reel in it, leave there 10-15 minutes, this makes the fluorocarbon and mono to lose their memory on the spool, then take out the spool, put two chairs side by side, run a pencil or something into the spool and rest in the middle of two chair then start spooling your new line. Getting rid of the memory and placing the spool reel in between the chairs are very important. Thank you.
100% correct. I'd be concerned about the chemicals in the glue or after several respools, the repeatedl application of glue making sharp peaks & edges & cutting into the line.

Just bought the new Shimano Curado DM computerized baitcasting Reel and like it very much. Supposed to eliminate backlash, but still takes practice. I have followed the instructions of other videos to the letter and kept having problems with the line of my spinning reels, they kept talking about the line being label up or down does the line goes clockwise or counter clock wise, your way fixed the problem THANK YOU!

The super glue idea surely works; I fish a lot of six-pound braid and it doesn’t last long and I replace it often. I found a trick that works well for me; I wrap three or four turns around the spool before I tie a uni-knot. When it tights on to the spool it doesn’t slip. A tool I use has become so handy I keep one with me in my boat or in my vehicle when fishing. It is a line counter; I can put an exact amount of line on my spool and not guess if it is too much or too little. It saves me tons of money because it saves line. You can tell easily when a spool is full, but you have no idea how much line you replaced unless you replace all of it. Using a line counter and replacing only the amount of the line, you need saves line and you don’t need to buy as much line. I use baitcasters trout fishing small streams and sometimes put as little as 70-feet of line on my reel. The reels are designed to cast lures from two to six grams. The less line you use the better the reels cast light lures. However, this is not important Power fishing for bass, but still saves line costs if you only replace part of the line you use. This makes using one a great tool for both Power Fishing and Ultralight Baitcasting fishing. The excepted name is BFS fishing its short for (Baitcasting Finesse System).Warning once you try it; it is easy to be hooked on doing it.
Hey Jimmy. On the spinning reels I put 2 or 3 half hitches in stead of super glue. I also tie on a fairly heavy weight then streech out as much line as I can then reel it make in with the weight holding resistance. I have an advantage that my land is long an narrow so I can take out the whole reel of line. I also do this periodically after fishing.
For the average fisherman with only one fishing rod, mono is the winner. Rookies will cut too much braid, while also have more tangles with fluoro. I'm just stunned to learn that spooling line actually have some technique depending on gear, and not just spool line to it like i have been doing it forever. Thanks for the tips.

Twist can be reduced with a swivel especially with weightless sinko on fluorocarbon using bait caster reels. Also using a swivel directly on the hook to trap the sinko on the line was one of your clever tips. Keep them coming I am always interested.
I must say this and I apologize if I hurt someone's feelings. When you put braid on please don't use super glue. It will break loose if you get into a big fish. All you have to do is put on a little bit of mono first, then use an Albright knot to tie the mono to the braid, this will stop the braid from slipping and allow you to have a solid setup for any size fish. Even if you get spooled the fish wont break it loose and you still have a chance to land it. I mean if I am being honest you should really never get spooled , but this method is way more solid.
Roland had been fishing for 50 years in hundreds of tournaments and had caught some of the biggest fish and species in the US.. if he says it works then it works lol. My dad taught me this 10 years ago and I’ve never had my line spin or slip even when fishing sturgeon.. which is one of the hardest fighting fish you can catch.. electrical tape also works just as good or better then using a line backer. Line backing is a waste of time and line. Cheapest and fastest is some scotch or electrical tape and a dab of super glue and let it dry for a couple minutes. Then spool like normal.
i put flurocarbon in a bucket with hot water start to reel and when finished tie off to your first eye , it takes out the memory so when you spool up it doesnt want to fly off your reel. never used backing
Maybe I am just lucky, but I put my line on spinning reels the same way as Roland puts it on a casting reel, for all types of line. Never tried the 'turn-the-spool-over' thing before. Never had an issue unless I overloaded the spool. I use a small piece of wood dowel in the middle of the spool, hold it against the carpet with my toes and regulate the pressure that way. I loop the line around the spool and tie it off. I then secure it with electrical tape. I reel it in nice and tight, leaving a good depth on the spool. I'd be nervous about using so much super glue. Not to argue with the Pro, but that just doesnt seem very smart.
Superglue, interesting alternative ? We would back it with mono, use some electrical tape or as Jimmy Houston does tie in 3 or 4 half hitches to knot it down.
Dont use the glue. Just put 1-1/2 revolution of vinyl electrical tape around your spool. the braid will bite into that and will never slip. I love Roland but I think he would put superglue on a ham sandwich if they let him.

I have never used superglue with braid or any other line. With braid I wrap the line 3 times around the spool that a uni knot with 3 loops it works fine. I did learn a few things I didn't know the holes in the arbor on a baitcaster and how to spool fluocarbin line it always turned into birds nest on me.
So you don’t need a backing for braid ? Just through the holes on a bait caster and super glue for the spinning ? I also herd tape can work as well ? Everybody online now says to use a mono backing I’d rather not if I don’t need to

Thanks for the refresher course (I've watched several). I've got 2 solid methods for spooling casting reels for big river fish and very recently realized it's been well over 20 years since a spooled a spinning reel. Ha, I'd forgotten completely! It's a challenge getting older, maybe some of those memory supplements from TV would help, lol! My baitfishing rigs are the cheapest of cheap spincasters and pretty dismal performance so I started shopping online. Shazzam! moment was to dig out my box of Zebcos and rebuild a 33 or two and in the corner of my garage sat my old favorite Smallie wading rig. A 1990's 7'ML Lightning Rod combo. Out of retirement, my new baitfish rig! Should be perfect for panfish and bullheads. 5:00PM now and by 5:45 I'll be on a local pond putting bait in a bucket. Thanks!

Never knew that about fluorocarbon line. I haven't been fishing in years, and I've never tried it. Nor have I fished with braided line. I have used spiderwire.
I can't say that I liked spiderwire when I got snagged since it was 20lb. test. Now I like it. Least I know how to use it now/w a leader.
I didn't know how to tie a knot in braided line, and I hadn't noticed how the line slips through the knot so easily. I snelled a few hooks with the braid using monofilament knots. That didn't work. I'm going to have to cut the snells off. I bought a spool if it recently.
I watched your videos that showed me how to do the knot tying and a lot of other things.

As you said that fluorocarbon and mono both have memory. Here we spool in the kitchen lol, we the boil water, pour the hot water into a sauce pan, then drop the spool reel in it, leave there 10-15 minutes, this makes the fluorocarbon and mono to lose their memory on the spool, then take out the spool, put two chairs side by side, run a pencil or something into the spool and rest in the middle of two chair then start spooling your new line. Getting rid of the memory and placing the spool reel in between the chairs are very important. Thank you.

Never tried super glue , but I always use electrical tape for spin and especially bait casters because the line won't slip due to the grip of the tape
100% correct. I'd be concerned about the chemicals in the glue or after several respools, the repeatedl application of glue making sharp peaks & edges & cutting into the line.
This is a good tip if you have put your line on wrong and twisted it by accident. Saved me a spool of braid!

Just bought the new Shimano Curado DM computerized baitcasting Reel and like it very much. Supposed to eliminate backlash, but still takes practice. Someone who actually showed me how to REALLY put fluorocarbon line on a spool. On average, flip the line spool every 10 turns of the reel.
I have followed the instructions of other videos to the letter and kept having problems with the line of my spinning reels, they kept talking about the line being label up or down does the line goes clockwise or counter clock wise, your way fixed the problem THANK YOU!
I always used mono backing...never had a problem...just tied a double uni knot to whatever line I was using.

The super glue idea surely works; I fish a lot of six-pound braid and it doesn’t last long and I replace it often. I found a trick that works well for me; I wrap three or four turns around the spool before I tie a uni-knot. When it tights on to the spool it doesn’t slip. A tool I use has become so handy I keep one with me in my boat or in my vehicle when fishing. It is a line counter; I can put an exact amount of line on my spool and not guess if it is too much or too little. It saves me tons of money because it saves line. You can tell easily when a spool is full, but you have no idea how much line you replaced unless you replace all of it. Using a line counter and replacing only the amount of the line, you need saves line and you don’t need to buy as much line. I use baitcasters trout fishing small streams and sometimes put as little as 70-feet of line on my reel. The reels are designed to cast lures from two to six grams. The less line you use the better the reels cast light lures. However, this is not important Power fishing for bass, but still saves line costs if you only replace part of the line you use. This makes using one a great tool for both Power Fishing and Ultralight Baitcasting fishing. The excepted name is BFS fishing its short for (Baitcasting Finesse System).Warning once you try it; it is easy to be hooked on doing it.
Hey Jimmy. On the spinning reels I put 2 or 3 half hitches in stead of super glue. I also tie on a fairly heavy weight then streech out as much line as I can then reel it make in with the weight holding resistance. I have an advantage that my land is long an narrow so I can take out the whole reel of line. I also do this periodically after fishing.

For the average fisherman with only one fishing rod, mono is the winner. Rookies will cut too much braid, while also have more tangles with fluoro. I'm just stunned to learn that spooling line actually have some technique depending on gear, and not just spool line to it like i have been doing it forever. Thanks for the tips.

Twist can be reduced with a swivel especially with weightless sinko on fluorocarbon using bait caster reels. Also using a swivel directly on the hook to trap the sinko on the line was one of your clever tips. Keep them coming I am always interested.

I must say this and I apologize if I hurt someone's feelings. When you put braid on please don't use super glue. It will break loose if you get into a big fish. All you have to do is put on a little bit of mono first, then use an Albright knot to tie the mono to the braid, this will stop the braid from slipping and allow you to have a solid setup for any size fish. Even if you get spooled the fish wont break it loose and you still have a chance to land it. I mean if I am being honest you should really never get spooled , but this method is way more solid.
Roland had been fishing for 50 years in hundreds of tournaments and had caught some of the biggest fish and species in the US.. if he says it works then it works lol. My dad taught me this 10 years ago and I’ve never had my line spin or slip even when fishing sturgeon.. which is one of the hardest fighting fish you can catch.. electrical tape also works just as good or better then using a line backer. Line backing is a waste of time and line. Cheapest and fastest is some scotch or electrical tape and a dab of super glue and let it dry for a couple minutes. Then spool like normal.

i put flurocarbon in a bucket with hot water start to reel and when finished tie off to your first eye , it takes out the memory so when you spool up it doesnt want to fly off your reel. never used backing

Maybe I am just lucky, but I put my line on spinning reels the same way as Roland puts it on a casting reel, for all types of line. Never tried the 'turn-the-spool-over' thing before. Never had an issue unless I overloaded the spool.
I use a small piece of wood dowel in the middle of the spool, hold it against the carpet with my toes and regulate the pressure that way. I loop the line around the spool and tie it off. I then secure it with electrical tape. I reel it in nice and tight, leaving a good depth on the spool.
I'd be nervous about using so much super glue. Not to argue with the Pro, but that just doesnt seem very smart.
It's all about line twist with a spinning reel!

Great tips. I have not used braided line yet. The superglue is a good tip. I grew up respooling reels in a bucket of water. Seems to unspool easier.
Dont use the glue. Just put 1-1/2 revolution of vinyl electrical tape around your spool. the braid will bite into that and will never slip. I love Roland but I think he would put superglue on a ham sandwich if they let him.

I have never used superglue with braid or any other line. With braid I wrap the line 3 times around the spool that a uni knot with 3 loops it works fine. I did learn a few things I didn't know the holes in the arbor on a baitcaster and how to spool fluocarbin line it always turned into birds nest on me.
So you don’t need a backing for braid ? Just through the holes on a bait caster and super glue for the spinning ? I also herd tape can work as well ? Everybody online now says to use a mono backing I’d rather not if I don’t need to
