  • Spool a spinning reel can be easy, or frustrating. And Spooling a spinning reel can be a bit challenging due to line twists, but if done correctly, it can lead to an enjoyable fishing experience. While there are products available on the market to help with spooling, Angling Edge's Jeff Simpson will focus on the do-it-yourself manual process.

I've been throwing the spool of line in the water since I can remember. I think it was my grandpa that taught me but heck that was over 30 years ago can't remember , but it does work very well!

My grandpa taught me how to cook marinara. Therefore, I missed the lesson about throwing the spool of line in the water. Great video! By the way, after I add line to my spool, I’m going to cook pasta.

To remove twist, on the water, just do a slow troll and let out all your line(with out a hook attached) Troll for a couple hundred yards and all the twist will have been take out of your line, Reel it in with a little tension on the line and you are good to go.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I'm gonna try the "spool in the sink' method It looks like it works pretty slick. Thanks for the tip.
I, too, will slow troll my line to get the twist out of my line.

Pro tip for getting line off any reel
Im guessing 70% of men who fish own a battery drill and a roll of duct tape
Take a pencil or doll rod or cut the straight portion from a A framed plastic hanger
    Chuck it in your drill
Wrap it sticky side up in duct tape
Tie your line to the tape and run the drill using your hand to evenly distribute the line into the duct tape.
In about 60 seconds you should be done and I personally take the line coverd rod out into my yard use my propane tourch and melt the old fishing line into a solid glob so it cant harm any animals and once it cools dispose of it

6:21 looks like you have way too little line on for good casts

After working in the retail fishing business for more than 15 years, I can tell you truthfully that if you are spooling a Mitchell 300 reel, everything needs to be reversed. The reel turns counter-clockwise so your line needs to come off the spool in a clockwise direction.
