  • This is Part I on map UTM navigation using you GPS, Roamer Scale or Corner Ruler and a compass. Topographic map shown is 1:24,000 scale at the 7.5 minute series purchased at www.mytopo.com This video is for informational purposes only. As always you must be proficient with a map, compass and GPS and have the necessary training before setting out on any outdoor navigation treks.

One slight correction if I may. The Northing coordinate you wrote on the pink sticky note shows "4191480N" but according to the UTM, it should be "4391480N". These little things can really confuse a new student. Thanks!

I love the informative video you made, but I have a question. Where did you get the UTM coordinates 4191480 N?, isn't that suppose to be 4391480 N

What you wrote as Northing on the note is wrong. It should read 4391480 N. Or have missed something?

I'm sorry if this is silly, but why was your second measurement 41 and not 43?

    Hi,
Nice informative vid, but I'm curious why you didn't just buy the map from mytopo with the UTM grid lines pre-printed on it (this is what I do). Also, have you ever tried a slot tool rather than a corner ruler? I'm a fan of the slot tools myself. Since they align on a grid line, they just "feel easier' to me on the map.

wow. information overload! :) i think it will take a couple view of paying close attention before i fully groc all this great info! love your teaching style. :-) anyone ever tell you that you kind of sound like Bob Ross (RIP)? man, i love listening to that guy! ;-)
    can't wait for part deux!

Viewers - Roamer scales (the clear plastic thing he shows at about 8:00) are not really needed. With a little practice you can you can just eyeball your position with an accuracy of plus or -100 m, which is fine for getting yourself located on the map. Or, you can copy the most detailed part of the scale bar quickly into a scrap of paper, and use that in the same manner. The point is, don't carry more fluffery with you than necessary.

do I need to feed this info into a GPS? as I want to navigate without one using UTM references, so, if my tool is giving me log/lat, is that all the information I need? I understand the rest of using a 1:24000 topo. thanks

james garrity all quality GPS recievers can be changed as to the way they display coordinates (UTM, Lat/Long) AND which 'datum' it should use to reference those coordinates (NAD27, NAD83, WGS84 or whatever your map uses). Read your manual as to how and where in its UI (User Interface) that is done. (generally, which ever coordinate system it displays is the same way you enter, ie. lat/long in decimals, you enter in decimals; displays in UTM, you enter in UTM)
As for navigating without a GPS reciever ( assume when you said 'navigate without one' you meant without a GPS); what ever reference you're using to plan with (online map, GPS program or physical map) you need to ensure that either the map you take is the same datum...or you've converted properly. Where I live, there are number of 'editions' of maps depending on scale...and some are NAD27, some are NAD83. The difference can be up to 300 meters between the two (in a determined direction).
To keep life simple...plan your route on the map you're going to use in the field (the physical map, so there's NO way to mix up datums). Then there's NO issues with what projection was used. The source IS the map you carry.
As mentioned in this video, some maps may 'say' the datum you wanted but may include other datum. As his map did, the graphic the map was based on was a NAD27 grid...the references on the map edges were ADDED, by the printer, after the fact; but they can't REMOVE the old datum lines from the original map (they get a 'scan' of the original map from the USGS but add their own 'index' information). What ever was on the original map, is ON the printed map you buy. So, like him, CHECK!!!!
And in this example, you can SEE the difference between the grid (NAD27) lines (original to the map image the printer rec'd from USGS)...and the hash marks (NAD83) printed on the side of the maps edges (added by the printer) showing the datum HE asked for from them. They didn't line up (neither the lat/long or the UTM hash marks lined up with the grid), hence needing to keep an eye on the datum of a map, GPS and coordinates.
And I believe, he's incorrect about the grid printed on the map. USGS doesn't print UTM grids (on USGS topo maps, ref: USGS website "Geospatial Data FAQ's" since 1992, even though the policy changed in '94, it didn't effect most topo maps), they print Lat/Long grids (in black) with UTM hash marks (in blue) IF there's even a grid printed (I have several USGS maps with NO GRIDs at all, just hash marks for both systems). Thusly, the BLACK grid on his map is probably a NAD27 Lat/Long; still doesn't line up with the black NAD83 Lat/Long hash marks on the side. Just one more 'confusion' with maps (and those printed from map providers who can change the index/datum information but CAN'T change the actual map itself). Just to emphasize the importance of KNOWING what you're looking at.

rayman1968 ....I thought this map had the UTM grid on it when I looked at the preview online didn't realize that it was an embedded grid all my other maps have the UTM grid printed on them from mytopo this one just got by me...I have never tried the slot tool and based on your comments I may give this a try...Thanks!!!!

It looks like those old nad1927 crosses are about 200 meters off of the nad1983 grid corners. That's quite a bit of difference.

i'm not a master map reader as of now. But I want to have knowledge in this, my question is would it be better to start using this UTM reading over LAT/LONG? Thanks

Ok great thanks for the reply. Why does 90% of the population (including Apple and Google maps) use Lat/Long then and not UTM? I need to get a book on this stuff and get reading. Thanks again great vid.

I am trying to learn to pull gps cords from the 1:75,000 maps I can get for my area in michigan, I can't seem to find and way to measure UTM at the 1:75,000, the Universal Transverse Mercator does not have a scale for this datum.
Is there other mercators in out there in 1:75,000

Go to Caltopo.com. You can add a UTM grid on the print page with one click. Search TH-cam for "Caltopo" to find some great tutorial videos.

  • @johngo6283
    @johngo6283 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Also, while mytopo.com produces some good maps, you can get the exact same thing (and more) for FREE at Caltopo.com. Caltopo offers free topographic maps, it just about any scale and paper size you want, with a variety of base layers. It's easy to print a UTM grid on your maps.
Import and export GPX track files, add markers, find UTM coordinates of a specific point, and more. Save your map as a PDF file and email it to a friend, print it, or save it as a back up onto your phone. There are a few good TH-cam videos on how to use it, just do a search for < Caltopo > and you will find some.
