Keeping it simple and checking your location at each steering point is so important. I have gotten lazy and used distant features and just bypassed an available steering point while keeping track of my paces (for the sake of time). When it got darker I missed my box and was off by about 200 meters. Deal breaker! lol! Check and recheck helped me out later, taking that 3-5 minutes to reverify made all the difference. Land nav is an exercise in patience and a little OCD.

Looks like East Range at Schofield Barracks. That place brings back memories. It is a tough Land Navigation Course from doing it when I was back there. Panama's Jungle Operations Training Center was much worse trying to navigate through triple canopy jungle. Hey East Range was just as tough but more enjoyable than running into snakes, African Killer bees, and the notorious Black Palm trees in Panama.

reddevilparatrooper thanks for the comment! It was filmed on East Range when I was a Small Group Leader at the NCOA.
      Good times!

@@STOKERMATIC= I remember back in the mid 90s a young private from an infantry battalion doing land nav in East Range doing preparation for EIB went missing. The entire battalion and the division went looking for this kid. After about a month some local hikers found him down stream to where the "Tunnels" would be at. Yes East Range is a dangerous place to be by yourself. I used to ruck march starting from the Leilehua Golf Course to the Air Assault School and LFC back with no problems. That road was up and down and especially the heat it can kick your ass on a speed march.

I enjoyed my time there - had the opportunity to bushwhack through the gulches, through parts unknown. It can be a very dangerous place, once you step down into the wild. Take care!

Mahalo, Mr. Stoker! Land Nav is an important discipline in SAR work here for us on Kauai, as a voluntee SAR K-9 unit. Dispatched by Police, Fire or the DLNR we need to know where we are or where our objective is in locating a missing person. Thank you Sir for what you do and, for this refreshing video. Kauai SAR K-9 unit.

Ahh good O'l East Range. First place I learned how to land nav. Awesome course in my opinion didnt even have to pull out my compass for most of it, usually just terrain associate.
