- Volcano: The Blast Coaster is about to become Volcano: The Wing Coaster taking a shot at its biggest competition.
The rivalry between Busch Gardens v. Kings Dominion is one of the greatest, and it’s always enticing when one takes a hit, because then we know something good is on the way.
It’s difficult to say either took a bigger hit than Kings Dominion is 2019, facing the sudden closure of their fan-favorite coaster, followed by what would have been the perfect Volcano replacement heading their main competitor.
I always suggested Kings Dominion could counter this by adding an Intamin Hyper Coaster, to 1, fill that hypercoaster gap, and 2, take the eyes off Pantheon. But the likeliness of that is always low, Cedar Fair and Intamin most likely won't ever work together again… but that's okay, because Kings Dominion has another trick up their sleeve, and it’s got to be good or else they’ll suffer the wrath of Roman Gods.
There’s gotta be a reason Volcano's replacement is taking so long, and I think I know why.
Now, I don’t think a Wing Coaster will necessarily be a better ride than a Pantheon, but I think it has an edge that Pantheon doesn’t.
We’re not here to speculate whether this is or isn’t the next coaster, but to explore the possibilities of why this wing coaster, and in general, why a Volcano replacement is taking so long to get built and how it’s preparing to fight Pantheon.

I couldn't watch Dante's Peak because it reminds me of that coaster, but it can always be brought back, but only at this park. But because I would hate them if they make a coaster that would come launching out of a model mountain especially on top no matter if it's a different theme or It will be stealing. However, it would be nice if they revive it into a Gerstulaur Launch Invert.
I get the sentiment, but at the very least, it's nice that there will be a spiritual successor, especially for those of us who never got to ride the original.
Well, I never rode Volcano, but it looks overrated. I think a B&M could replace it properly, but with the rattle their newer coasters are having, it is unlikely.
I agree that the level of theming could make or break this ride with the GP and enthusiasts. I drive from Charlotte every summer to KD and there wasn’t much of a better top 3 than i305, volcano and Twisted Timbers
I think the proximity and competition between KD and BG really allows the customer to really benefit, both of these parks are always trying to one up one another and we are benefiting from it.
Years and years ago, for one summer I can remember a pass that was offered where the two parks worked together for once and offered a seasons pass type pass to both parks
That ICONIC MOUNTAIN, which was the Haunted River ride before Volcano should be REBUILT with a themed Coaster around it. The once towering structure separated itself from any other theme park north of Disney World
They should just hire a competitor to rebuild Volcano again.
The reason Volcano doesn't exist anymore is the trouble with maintenance and how hard it was to repair around and inside of the Volcano- I doubt they will ever replace it/ build something like it.
Maybe it’s taking so long, because it’s a launched B&M flyer, and not a wing coaster at all. It would be another first of its kind just like volcano was.
There is a launched flying coaster built in 2020 to Phantasialand called "F.L.Y".
It would be the first B&M launched flying coaster and first in USA, but not the first in the world.

Never in a million years would I have ever expected Volcano to bite to the dust before... Anaconda 🤯
The only reason is because of reliability. Anaconda is rarely to ever down, vs Volcano. The park spent millions on repairs, it was a maintenance nightmare for the park. I'm sure, as much was spent on repairs close to how much the ride cost in 1998.
KD needs to rebuild the mountain and the coaster come out of it giving off volcano vibes would be real cool in imo.

They haven't worked together since 2010 so it's not too out there to think. Although the merger could change all of their relationships with manufacturers
Yeah given the merger with Six Flags I have to think that relationship will be strongly reconsidered especially given the recent successes of Intamin with other parks.
I think everyone here needs to remember that CF & Intamin haven't worked together since 2010 on NEW MAJOR INVESTMENTS. They still have quite a large portfolio of Intamin attractions across the chain that need parts & maintenance, and they certainly go to their rides' manufacturers when they need parts.
Top Thrill 2 wasn't Intamin likely because of the price tag, and in part due to Intamin being difficult to work with from their strained relationship. Intamin isn't exactly happy with CF either for being blamed for issues with prototype attractions and innovative designs, and they definitely stand by their products over taking the hit.
Definitely understand not expecting any brand new flashy coasters or major rides from Intamin at CF parks (at least until we see what happens with the SF merger), but it'll be funny when all the "CF WORKING WITH INTAMIN AGAIN!?!?!?!?!?!" vids drop just because CF goes to Intamin for some notable rehab work or new trains for an existing ride.

Now a ride opp at Busch gardens said to everyone riding that they are getting a B&M coaster that is going to reuse drakenfires station. This is all part of their 50th anniversary special.

Well it’s Confirmed it’s a BNM and it’s on its way and they started building it this week! Right in the middle of the park footers are going in!!!
Because of the proximity, even though it is a pipe dream, but it would be great having a wing coaster do an overbanked curve around Flight of Fear's silo. They could even paint the outside of the silo to match whatever theming they were planning.

Phoenix would be an amazing name for this. Not only is it a great name but having a section where you launch out of the volcano into the sky would be epic

They need to have the volcano facade return
i feel like for theming add a small mini volcano with fake fire and lava effects below the airtime hill and add mroe volcanic rock around the ride and maybe for the last inline twist add volcanic rock and jungle trees near misses are definitely needed
Been a busch gardens pass holder since I was a child (now 38 with my own kids). Honestly kings dominion is a way better park IMO. Its cleaner with a friendlier staff and better quality control. If you have kids , planet snoopy rocks ! We enjoy going to both parks, but we look forward to KD much more
Im sorry but KD is not the better park…It is actually way dirtier than BGW, not nearly as much shade or foliage in the park, the theming is not nearly as good, the food choices aren’t as good, and besides Project (Intimdator) 305, Twisted Timbers, and Dominator, the ride selection really drops off. Flight of fear is decent, and Grizzly probably feels better since some re-tracking, but nothing else sticks out.
Since 2014, Busch Gardens Williamsburg has added 5 coasters in just 10 years, plus recently repainted and re-tracked Loch Ness monster aaaand is rumored to either add something to Drachenfires old station or do a “Big Bad Wolf 2”.
Since 2014, Kings Dominion has torn down 3 coasters and only have added 2…Anaconda will probably be next on the chopping block, as it should. Busch Gardens is one of the prettiest parks in the country for a reason, and has more “well rounded” coasters than kings dominion.

If wish they went with dive coaster and keep the volcano they could have the dive coaster dive into the volcano
I think they screwed up by tearing down the actual mountain.. that mountain was iconic to kings dominion and had held so many different great attractions throughout the years.. I would’ve preferred seeing them keep the volcano/mountain and do a dive coaster into the volcano and call it ‘volcano II “the quest” ‘ or something.. hell maybe even a dive coaster with a launch somewhere in the second half.. I just think a wing coaster isn’t a great successor to that land plot where the theming element will probably never in a million years live up to what was and what has already been.. plus they already have dominator which is a great coaster that I think will be even better than any wing coaster they could do.
I'm sad I went to KD several times as a youth and Volcano was closed.i did get the hypersonic credit. But not the same. I was heartbroken when they took it down
Fenix at toverland dosnt really do the near misses but is still by far one of the best wing coasters.

They should have built a Mack Hyper. With DC Rivals and the upcoming Hyperia Mack has shown they are capable of incredible world class Hypers.
A B&M Wing coaster is such a boring choice.

There is a mythical creature that can tie in the area theme to africa. It's called the Kongmato.
I hope it's the most theamed coaster in kings dominion. That will 1 up Pantheon. They can make it lauch out of a volcano in memory of the blast coaster. N they should make it go through a waterfall at the end to "kill the Phoenix"😂.

RMC is rumored to go there and I’m all for it. Darkoaster was more of a family ride and since it’s the 50th anniversary next year, I think they’re gonna add another thrill ride. Heard rumors of a “Big Bad Wolf 2” which would be awesome

Volcano and Flight of Fear were their best two coasters. Now Volcano is gone and FoF is rough as all hell. Kings Dominion will never be close to as amazing as Busch Gardens is. 💋
Facts KD was better back in the day but they more coasters.
Theming could make or break this ride, so hopefully they could make a good effort to theme it well, unlike Pantheon.

Yes agreed. I've spent extensive time at both parks this year and I always have a better time at kings dominion. The coaster lineup is more diverse and better imo
Dude, really?????? Any B&M is NO replacement for any Intamin. Im sorry, but no Intamin, no top tier, headline rides. CF doesnt start working with Intamin again, thats the end of quality thrilling rides at CF parks.

Fury 325: Exists, Steel Vengeance: Exists Both not Made by Intimin. Both are considered world class also? I understand that a lot of elite coasters are built by them, But by no means does that mean that they are the only good manufacturer
KD is an enthusiast park all the way at this point. Adding a B&M wing would be so counterproductive. Thusies hate gatekeeper which is the best possible wing coaster it makes no sense.

For me, the ONLY replacement to Volcano is a new Volcano. I don’t care how good some other coaster is, it will never be what I want to see there. Everything will always be inferior. Without a mountain with fire coming out of it, it is a step DOWN.

B&m is the modern day arrow. Their vibrating design from the 80s is far from perfect but since they keep selling they won’t do anything different. They didn’t learn and will meet the same fate.
They're trying to innovate (Surf coaster for example) but they just fail to make good layouts imo. It's all super tame on the airtime and only strong in the positives, which is the exact opposite of what I'd want in a coaster. However, that safe design philosophy is why parks love them.
