  • Boeing 727-251(WL)/Adv / 4K-8888
Silk Way Business Aviation (opf AZAL) / J2 124
Departure: Geneva Cointrin (GVA), Switzerland (Rwy 05)
Arrival: Baku Heydar Aliyev Int'l (GYD), Azerbaijan (Rwy 18)
    Date: 18th July 2014 / Seat 16A
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Window View from AZAL's short lived 727 service from Geneva to Baku. The aircraft is seen operating the third and final rotation to Geneva only a week after it started, and it turned out to be the last ever scheduled 727 flight in Europe. The load was 6/6 in F (an apparently very rich Azeri family), and 3 other pax in biznes klas which you can see boarding ahead of me. There was evidently increased traffic over the Black Sea due to the closure of eastern Ukraine's air space the day before after the MH 777 was shot down. The A380 was: A380-841 9V-SKG, Route: ZRH-SIN SQ345
Coincidently 9V-SKG is the only SQ A380 I have flown on, and there is a 50% chance I have been on the QR 346 also, but I couldn't find it on Flightradar24 yet. Check out the cruise & arrival video with plenty of more traffic from underway.

Watching those flaps extend and retract, reminded me back in '85, the first time I saw a 727 in the hangar with flaps at 40, I wondered, where in the hell they hid all that flap! Later, I became a PFE on it, and was still amazed of those triple slotted flaps. Nice catch of the A380, and A340, still the old 727 holding its own more than 50 years later. Great video!

My favorite passenger jet of all time. Many people do not know how slippery she was too. Fastest sub sonic bird ever made. In the 70s, 80s, early 90s they would typically cruise her at .91 to .92 mach but she was capable of much more. My dad was a captain on the 727 and had around 4k hours on her. He told me an amazing story about training with the original frontier on the 27. Because she was so fast there was the potential of reaching just under supersonic speeds under the right conditions (in fact it's well known that a 727 did surpass Mach 1 in an unintended dive and lived to tell the story) so they trained the pilots on the dynamics of that type of speed on the plane. He said they would take her up to mach .97 .98 and start to feel the effects. The yoke would begin to shake and they could see the "mach bubble" begin to form on the leading edge of the wing. He spoke quite candidly of the experience like it was nothing. Just part of training to fly the fastest sub sonic commercial jet in the sky. I hope they never die off completely...

I planned all my 727-200’s with -7 engines at Mach0.85
      727-200Adv with -15 engines at Mach 0.85.
We usually made up time that it took us to turn the things.
Second best riding plane I have ever flown, Citation X is the best.

The Convair 990A was officially the fastest subsonic commercial aircraft as during it's normal cruise it surpassed every subsonic bird in the sky, needless to say it could break the sound barrier without much of a problem if pushed.

I'd pay extra to fly on a 727 if they still offered such a service in N. America.
Remember the good 'ol days on AC, WA, UAL and DAL variants. My favourite was WA's version; "The only way to fly!"

I flew for the first time when I was 14 years old. Flew by myself from Greensboro, NC to Miami on an Eastern Airlines 727 in 1975. Still my favorite airliner. Never forget the thrill of that powerful takeoff!

That is one well maintained aircraft. Reminds me of flying Eastern Airlines to Bermuda in the 70s and 80s. I miss her.

Thank you! I believe it is now the official Djibouti Government VIP aircraft. It got a 5Y-register (Kenia) some time ago, but not sure if it still flying.

I just have to ask why you don't include the entire flight on just one video? It would make it much easier to follow, plus, I'm sure it would make it much easier to upload just one video rather than two or three. I remember when most people couldn't make any videos longer than 15 minutes unless they verified their channel name which is very easy to do. Just the same, I love the audio quality of your videos, and thanks for making them.

Hi David, I think this bird is now somewhere in Kenya, it carries or carried a 5Y-registration. It was supposed to be the official government aircraft of Djibouti, but I think this deal never materialized.

In the 80s they would cruise the 27 at about .91 to .93 mach. But she was far capable of faster flight. Sustained .95 to .96 easy. But, she burned a helluva lot more fuel at those speeds so the airlines put the kabosh on that real quick--source, my dad 4k hours on the 727.
