Definitely one of the best episodes of wsop ever. Cant believe this was almost 20 years ago now.
The phones are a clear giveaway lol
Ikr, I feel old. I was a teenager watching this, made me into a little gambler.
2005 poker was the best poker. Huge fields with no robots.
Only Shawn Sheikhan can make Mike Matusow likeable😂
agreed. 10 mins penalty for Mike was BS. Sheik slammed the table indicating he would have hit the flop...way out of line, then tries to get in Matusow's face. Oh well have fun in jail
I mean the difference is Mike is like playful usually. He's annoying, but kind of you just let him be and he'll shut up. Shawn is legitimately a brute and bully. That's the vibe I pick up at least
@@CrazeeAdam yes that's correct. Mike is annoying and dumb but has a good heart. Sheikhy is just an a hole
@@CrazeeAdam Shawn Sheikhan's 1995 conviction for misdemeanor sexual battery on a child under 18 kind of substantiates that vibe
He's on his way to prison for 5 years. He was just sentenced for running an illegal marijuana operation.
What Black does to Ivey in that first hand is insane. Gutsy
Very rare you get to see Ivey be complementary of someone outplaying him
Ivey got destroyed in this episode, by everyone including the commentators.
@@sleong you’re not wrong
Ivey proceeded to get bent over by the entire table and get his stack blasted 😂
pains me to watch Raymer lose that pot to Kanter. Such a terrible call for his tourney life robbed Raymer of possible history
And the thing is, all hands we saw, Raymer was playing really really well. Like making all the right reads and moves.. He probably deserved to be at the final table
That was a brutal beat, really upsetting to see. Rather deserved much better
Seeing how this Kanter guy is winning all those pots with those terrible plays...makes me think poker is a joke
it pains me when people comment on a specific part of a video and don't put a time stamp
Kanter such a donk
Raymer’s run might be the best performance ever.
@ChadVersus What the fck are you smokin'? Raymer wins & follows it up with a huge deep run - McKeen was a flash in the pan luckbox!
@@shadowdawg04loooool
It's inconceivable!!!
Absolutely.
@@shadowdawg04Raymer was super lucky in 2004
When poker had the best characters! Cant be duplicated, always be thankful for these gentlemen.
I cannot express how much fun it is to watch all of these mid aughtsain events. Please keep going!
The characters, the coverage, one of the greatest and important programs in Televison history. Honestly, no show has ever encouraged more people to play a game like ESPN's coverage. Everybody started playing poker... You could find a home game tournament every weekend if you wanted to.
Brings you right back. This was the peak of society as we knew it...
Matusow and Shiek are always entertaining together. Cant think of any other two players who are this much fun to watch go back and forth.
Devilfish v Tony G was always entertaining
Thanks for bringing us these videos
It’s wonderful to watch pokers glory days
Steve Dannenman is one of my favorite amateurs to make a deep run. He's a goofball, like me. 😁
The Sheikhan/Matusow banter was awesome to watch
I know luck is a big part of the game, but Kanter robbed all the luck from the bank.
I'm flabbergasted that Kanter made it that far in the first place if he was making plays like that.
Like Raymer 100% should have made that final table, kanter had no right calling down and winning that hand against him. And then with Lee too?
1:20:18 is one of the sickest hands I've ever seen. Mike Matsuow is RIGHT, "OH MYYYY.. WHAT WAS HE THINKING?", that was one of the craziest plays I've ever seen from Black with KJ against Barch's JJ. Considering the situation(biggest WSOP main event ever up to that point, 2nd to final table) it was ridiculous.
The guargantuon piles of chips and failure to color up are symbolic of the golden era of WSOP
29:01 Raymer passing the torch to Hachem
That Raymer vs Kanter hand still hurts to watch. Oh what could have been if Raymer won that hand.
The golden era of poker was 1990 - 2010.
Raymer: I run like God.
Kanter: Hold my beer.
Mike is one of the most self centered people in the world but he was completely right in his argument with Sheikhan and he should not have been punished.
He cursed, which at the time, was a10 minute penalty so he should have been and was penalized.
I already posted this comment but would love to know what Sheik had.
He was 100% right. Shouldn’t have cursed so penalty for both was a good middle ground, but it’s fkin poker and Sheik was way out of line.
I do agree with this but I think it official might have been tied to watever the wsop rules are.
Still, it was wrong that mike could not even protest the decision.
Raymer could have made history but Kanter with one of the worst calls in poker history (chasing a mediocre flush got there)and took most of Raymer's chips.
Kanter has some of the luckiest hands ever seen.
I’m glad Joe Hachem won though. If Raymer couldn’t. Joe is a pleasant, down to earth fellow.
What a joke of a play. Absolutely horribly played other than preflop, he easily could've been drawing dead. Awful...
@@kevinfinnerty8414 i cannot tell if this is trolling
As did Raymer had many lucky hands!
What’s to troll?? Look at the rest of that remaining field. Shawn the Sheik, Mike the Mouth, Danneman seemed like a complete A-hole. Black the crying Buddhist. I don’t even think Ivey would crack a smile if he won. Hachem always seemed like a cool dude to me. His friends in the crowd might be annoying
44:26 probably the only time you ever seen emotion out of Phil Ivey.
Kanter slowrolled.
What is Hachem thinking in that KJ hand against Ivey? 3 bet shoving on a JJ4 flop is wild, it’s a no brainer slow play.
That play by Kanter was wee-todd-did. Did Raymer dirty on a hand he played very well.
I can’t get enough!
Thanks to bring us these good ol' memories ;)
Yes! @PokerGo - are you planning to include the commentary take final table as well?
What is Ivey doing? Bluffing for no reason.
And wow people really had tempers back in the day. Makes for funny television though. Golden era of poker imo
6:38 Grizzle really enjoys it...
The raymer bad beat is one of the most memorable hands in wsop main event history.
Shoutout to the guy, every all in pot no matter who wins shouts "YEAAAAAAAAH!"
"It's like my father taught me, the old Bronx school of driving, always make the other guy brake. In no limit, you always want to put the other guy to a test." -Norman Chad
🤣
Kissing a photo of your kids in the middle of an all in hand is the quintessential Asian degen gambler.
Imagine playing flawless poker for 2 main events on the verge of back to back wins and you get done by some donk over playing QJ getting runner runner.. I reckon he would have done it.
I heard the Sheik was in the slammer 😂 at least they both have something in common besides poker 🤣🤣
not yet, but has to report before 1/1/24 to do 4 years
I guess they are kindred spirits after all.
4 years just for growing some weed? What a backwards country we have
@@BoRnMuSh for smuggling not growing lol
Sheik is such a 🍆. His delivery in situations where he’s clearly at fault and then points at someone else as the problem is Lance Armstrong-esque.
Should've done the rabbit camera at 38:00, where Steve D & Hachem are bantering w/ set vs. flush draw.
1:22:39 for the one and only year the winner didn't eliminate the final player to win the wsop main event but although to be fair this is before the organisers have thought of it at the time
37:00 best fold in the tournament. 😮
Agreed - most people would have called with two overs and the nut flush draw
That fold might have won Joe Hachem the tournament.
Not really. Dannenmann was literally cackling like a chicken. And making small talk with Phil Ivey, considered by many to be the best in the world and the best since Stu Ungar. When someone does something unusual, it's often because something unusual just happened to him. It's possible Dannenmann would behave the same way if he had the QJ of diamonds, but this really does SCREAM TT or 99.
Kanter is the luckiest poker player I’ve ever seen. Unbelievable
The first 2 hands of 10 handed were nuts
Andy Black is a legend.
Sure wish he filled up on Hachem flush, The way Joe stood up and said pass the sugar
What Andrew Black did with KJ was nutty, but also it took balls to call the Final Table bubble with JJ vs the chip leader (when there were 4 stacks lower than him) every place a guy ladders up at that point is the equivalent of winning a major tournament. If Black had AA,KK, QQ, AK, AQ he raises a preflop raise and call... a KQ is the only hand that makes sense that puts Barch at risk... Crazy thing is Andrew was not lying when he says "I'm either raising or folding" At this point, its important to know how much income your opponents have... If I am financially secure before the event, I call.... If I'm hurting, I think about folding... Also during this time a Main Event Final tablist, recognizable face, is getting paid huge by poker sponsors for a year. During this time a recognizable bracelet winner could easily make $25,000 a month through sponsors... If you were assigned the feature table, or made a televised final table, Pokerstars/ Party Poker etc... would transfer $30k into your account to were their hat.
I forgot how much of a luckbox Kanter was this tourney. What a joke lol
nothing like Darvin Moon. That guy hit every card in the deck
bro literally used up all is luck for a lifetime just to not get felted by Raymer on the river.
I didndt know mclovin 6:42 after highschool got job as floor supervisor at the wsop
As a morgage broker, I wonder if Steve Dannamen made more in 2005 poker or 2006-08 brokering mortgages?
Mike “The Mouth” Matusow may rub ppl the wrong way, but the guy plays with a ton of BALLS! I’ve never seen somebody be so willing to bluff & go All in with nothing just to steal money. Maybe cause I don’t watch often, but it’s fascinating to see.. & it’s not like he just plays reckless or dumb. He’s very smart with his moves.
Kanter and Williamson (the woman ) are proof that a player can play really bad and make it. They are terrible. I have been on the other side so many times being 85-93% at the flop and losing
Was there much talk about Tom Vu making a deep run? Those goofy commercials were ubiquitous when I was in college (or maybe it was high school). He got just a quick mention on this episode.
andrew black got lucky vs phan, but overall played very well considering it was 2005
Around 1:21:35 Lon says "three" for the first time in his life, instead of "trey"
Kanter was such a donk. He hit so many miracle cards
wonder if Sheik gets to watch this from his prison cell.
he's going to Club Fed so I'm sure he will have cable tv
Some of these hands towards the end of the video are just absolutely bezerk
Sheikhan is about to start a 4 year prison sentence, has to turn himself in to prison before 1/1/24.
Karma?
I'm glad Mike only got a penalty for the language used and not the fact that he, correctly, berated Shawn. Shawn is incredibly out of line to indicated that way and then he started talking to the crowd.
michael kessler seems like s really great guy!
Aaron Kanter is still the luckiest sucker to ever make the WSOP Main Event Final Table.
More than Jamie Gold?
Darvin Moon was luckier.
That hand with Raymer.. It should have been Greg there tbh.. Like.. Who calls the defending champ with that stupid hand? =/ then against Lee too... Stupid stuff
Like I know you have to get lucky to make it far, but that was just a bad call and play
you forgot about Darvin Moon. That guy hit every card in the deck for 4-5 days straight.
They always seem to try to give me all the chips too but they don’t miss
so, pot is 1.1 million on the Black vs Hachem hand going to the flop. Andrew black jams 2.5 million (2.5x pot) with top set lol. Poker was bananas back then!
😊 😊
Matusaw laughing at Sheik when he had 2 7 lol priceless
Tex Barch.. totally forgot about him didn't he finish 3rd then never heard much from him again.
Wow, forgot seeing how badly Kanter played and how stupidly lucky he ran lol
Man, tourney poker was so bad at this time. 3x raise, 80% continuation bet. So swingy!
Kanter with the donk run of the century even worse than Jerry Yang
Dannenman's all in at 35:00 v. Hachem...easy fold. he's way too comfortable. If he's quiet he probably gets a call.
Is there any particular backstory as to why the change from Rio's to Binion's?
yeah i think there was NOONE CARES
This is probably around the time Harrah's bought the WSOP, and they used a Harrah's property for the days there were thousands of players.
I love it how Mike talks shit when he's lucky with chips, but cries like a little baby when he's down.
Would love to know what Sheik had on that hand. I assume it was either A8 or A9 unsuited. Figure he’d go all in with pocket 8s or 9s. Thoughts?
Was wondering the same - wondering what Mike had also to re-raise all-in with after the flop. Time to scour the internet and see if I can find that hand. 🤣
He had A-9 for sure
Mike talked about his best recollection of that hand here.

The said raymer had 4 million that hand against kanter. He probably had 2 million or so
Its a shame what ended up happening with Raymer and his legal troubles. I was a huge fan of Fossil Man back in the day. Still doesn't change the fact tho that what he accomplished on his 04-05 run was incredibly impressive. Watching the 04 main event was the first time I ever saw it on TV and why i got into Poker
What trouble did he get into?
@@austinzimbelman3083 he got arrested in a prostitution sting
My favorite thing to do when I win a big pot, is to dance with my one hand up with my fingers wiggling! Than I tell people it’s my signature dance and what they call me…. The Puppet Master because I just managed to get (my opponent) to give me all their chips 😂😂😂
That dealer didn't have to knock all those chips down, what a dick.
Phil Ivey got absolutely DESTROYED. Outplayed by Black, Hachem, and then the frustration all in against Kanter with those Jacks was the final straw. Ivey was already crippled and bleeding chips following the hands with Black and Hachem.
would be nice to see the final table as well
Soon Great Cornholio. Soon.

I sure miss these days. Now it’s all poker robots, GTO, preflop charts, and all that crap that’s taking the fun out of poker.
Andrew Black was the business
Daddy Jack had to put them in timeout
Kanter vs Raymer was such sweet poetry. Thats exactly how Raymer went through both fields... Hitting flush draws on the river... It surprises me that Raymer went all-in after that turn, there was 4 to a straight and Kanter wasn't playing the hand like he had 10-10, J-J, or QQ... I don't know what Raymer put him on.
I agree 100%
Shawn Sheikan was in the wrong. He should've never had that anger outburst and indicated what he had !!
1:02:46 is about to be my ringtone
How much was each Degree checkmark worth?
Raymer's call with A-9 was odd... at that point with the blinds, he cannot call anything except with a huge hand...He's got to be in spots to open-push to collect blinds.
It's a stop and go. He knows Alsancak won't fold to a shove PF, so he hoped for a flop that could cause a fold. He decided it was better to bluff the flop than bluff PF. And there's also a chance he could catch an ace OTF.
You can see that he only lost 5% of his PF equity. So if the flop can convince Alsancak to fold, it's a HUGE win for Raymer.
Raymer could have got away from that Q J hand on the turn and picked a better spot
Sheik just seems to wake up angry.. I’m so glad he didn’t make the Final Table! I’ve never really watched Poker to the point where I know these guys, but after binge watching all 7 days, Sheik just gives off bad vibes. I’d much rather watch guys like, Tony G, Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow, etc…
They both fought the law and the law won.

I always remember this.
Sheik slamming his chips down.
So dumb.
Pass the Sugar
What did sheik say @7:57 ?
"Thats out of line" he said
Hard to believe Ivey and Matusow began chip leaders with 27 left and NEITHER made the final 9. Also kanter with an absolutely disgusting horrid call with nothing but a Q high flush draw so gross
Matusow finished 9th in this tournament
Variance, aka luck. Hachem came from the back of the pack. Most of the time when you lose your stack, it's not really your fault.
Audience all laughing at the Mouths jokes like bruh he ain’t that funny
Didn't Sheik just get sent to prison?
Pass the sugar? Get outttaaa hereeee
QJ of hearts is gross, especially when there’s nothing on the flop for him.
Mikey and the sheik....
Wow. Looking back, that KK hand of Raymer's was horridly played. His opponent has a massive range and nut advantage as the preflop caller. Preflop and flop is fine, but the turn was a massive mistake. His opponent can have all the sets and the straight. Granted, Raymer can possibly have smaller pairs too, but given his actual hand and being out of position, he shouldn't be going nuts on that board.
Raymer was dealt KK 251 times, so you'll have to be more precise.
Table 3 must have felt like they were at the loser table at weddings
