The girl on guitar with face almost covered with the wig really looks like Tangella off Creature Features. Maybe she's Tangella's grandma. ??? Strange Days...
😂🤣😅😆😁😄 This is effin inspired. I've never seen it before. Eric Idle was a genius. He's got it. He nailed the cosmically titanic, celestial ( run out of superlatives) pretentiousness of prog rock bands of that era. Each one of them thought he was a mystical, transcendental philosopher, following some Eastern guru ( Maharishi Bagwan Hardcastle), whereas they were often drugged up zombies with a streak of violence. I appreciated the guru. So you're from India ? No, I'm from Shepherd's Bush, but I work in an Indian restaurant. Pure genius. Thank you Eric. Thank you TH-cam for putting this lost gem into my feed. I didn't know it existed. BTW It shows that Spinal Tap weren't the first to nail rock n roll pretentiousness. But their version went all the way up to eleven.
That would be about right for The Old Grey Whistle Test. Or was it the Old Grey Whistling Bob Harris. I forget. It was a long time and a lot of methadone and oxycontin ago.
Saw this as an eleven year old (Toronto, Canada on PBS from Buffalo) and had NO IDEA what was going on but thought it was hilarious. TH-cam introduced me to OGWT and Whispering Bob decades later. Funny ol’ world.
Steve Flea actually joined Hot Nadgers after the Constipation For Sale tour. Hot Nadgers 2 were on the Billious label and released the single "Gusset Trouser Press in Pus Flange Dominion" . I found it at a car boot sale, £1.30. Bargain
Wasn't there an early 70s or possibly late 60s album entitled "A meal you can shake hands with in the dark". I didn't make that up. Honest, officer. I never heard it, but that title. It must have required half a pharmacy's worth of Class A substances to come up with that. 🤪😝
I was 11 and thought RWT was hilarious, though I don't remember this proto-spinal tap masterpiece. If I have to explain to anyone why Punk happened in '76 I'll just show them this! As a person of Indian descent 3:20 is brilliant; to this day I am approached by rich Americans/Europeans who've been ripped off by gurus in Goan spiritual supermarkets and think we have something in common.
Possibly but Eric Idle and Douglas Adams had worked together earlier on the fourth Monty Python Flying Circus season so the idea may have been something they came up with back then.
Ball Larks. I was searching for the Fast Show impersonation of the ' Old grey whistle test ' - Nice ! ~ Monetized no doubt. I gave the 112'th Fumbs Bub.
Eric Idle doing a great "Whispering" Bob Harris impersonation ! The Bandwagon song is a good effort and catchy. And Stan Fitch would do well on Eurovision or X-Factor !
Wait, i thought Toad The Wet Sprocket were a real band? I swear they were mentioned back in the late 80s, and oh god i really fell for the joke didn't I?
The Old Grey Whistle Test spoof - RWT (1975) 1027am 9.12.22 yeah... most excellent. is the sample of the audience cheering as splint began it's number the same sample used by the dickies for it's: where did his eye go track as opens on the dawn of the dickies album? th-cam.com/video/M9EZY0M31D0/w-d-xo.html
@@steveforest8385 Not the American band. The UK Toad The Wet Sprocket were around from '75 - '82. They did a session on Tommy Vance's Friday Rock Show, and they supported the likes of Budgie, Samson, Angelwitch & Iron Maiden in their time. They were a regular part of the scene at Neal Kay's HM Soundhouse, birthplace of the "NWOBHM".
Wow! Great! It's finished!!
Didnt see your comment when I wrote the same. Loved this.

When life is crap in the present, we can always go back to stuff like this. Good times.
The girl on guitar with face almost covered with the wig really looks like Tangella off Creature Features. Maybe she's Tangella's grandma. ???

Damn. I never thought I say this, but I gotta respect Toad the Wet Sprocket. At least the first version.

3:50.............wow.................................4:00 {one of the few great comedic silences}
Dude when they started working the light effects on the silent dead guy perfomance.
Pretty sure that was Lemmy of Motörhead playing the dead part. Also sure Douglas Adam’s used the same idea for his books.
That would be about right for The Old Grey Whistle Test.

😄
Playing bottleneck guitar AND drinking out of the bottle at the same time! Thank god for old videos like this to remind of brilliant days

What was on the BBC side ?
We are from Ukraine watching and love the favorite artists of our childhood the Monty Python and Benny Hill.
Now that's what I call " Taking the Piss ". Brilliant.
Extracting the urine for sure

“Wretched Admiral Sphincter”. Lmao
When it pans up from him not playing to his expressionless face I lose it everytime
Nearly pissed myself. Superb.
Wonderful spoof. Better than Whispering Bob Harris.
A much underrated show. made me wonder if it inspired Spinal Tap and Douglas Adams.
Hotblack Desiato is being dead this year for tax reasons lol
Loved Eric's Marc Bolan Impersonation
With Barry Wom on drums!
Wow great it's finished
This is a lot better then the actual show
lol It's hard to distinguish from the real thing.
lol, I know...brilliant

Stan Fich, the first All dead SINGER...
4:10 like a Rutle reunion
Happy memories!!
Wow, great, it's finished
Hot Nadgers....what a band they were 👍👍👍🤣🤣🤣
Interested in what the Red Buttocks might sound like.
@@iadorenewyork1
I dread to think 😲😲😲
They were hot.
I wonder if they had auditions for all-dead singers.
6:35 So that's where Douglas Adams got the idea for Hotblack Desiasto and Disaster Area.

Okay that song is pretty dope 👌 🔥
TH-cam Gold 😎👍
Toad the wet.... Sprocket...
They were a real band
Amazing how they appeared ten years before they were formed
Mantra Robinson, isnt that the teacher from Willy Wonka?
lol, yes it is.
Yes it is, good job recognizing him
@1:25 still more compelling than much of modern pop music.
Toad the Wet Sprocket was adopted by an actual band in 1986, fairly successful
Wonder if this is where the 90s band Toad the wet sprocket got their name? It has to be right?
Yup. The name was in a Monty Python skit as well.
I beiieve it was one of the names they considered before settling on the one they used.
@@Stubrit the name they used was Toad the Wet Sprocket

Wickedly hilarious. Although I wonder where they got Splint from? They weren't bad at all ...
Superb!
Honestly Bandwagon by Splint is a tune

Great music

This parody was from 1975. There was a band, but they were kids and took the name from this sketch in the late 80s. Eric Bell is the comedian.
Was the Pamela Stephenson in Toad TWS?....
This is genius, proof that the 70s wasn't actually that bad.
Can't beat Benny Hill (Bob Harris). .
Dirk Mquiggly on drums is it?
Dirk! Stig! Barry!
I forgot Toad The Wet Sprocket was making fun of early Genesis live 😂
Except they are more listenable than Genesis
I'm still waiting for Jeepster.
wow...Eric is hot to imitate Bob ....
Methinks I spot half the Rutles in the faux band Splint.
Three quarters even
4:13 anyone else dig this song? lol
Managed to diss both New York Dolls and Roxy Music. Harris wasn’t exactly down with the kids
He was right.
Are there any artist Eric Idle admires?
Splint is Neil Innes band 👍.......
hahaha...looks like Uli John Roth!

I think that's Lemmy at the end.
I thought that too - Hawkwind era?
I believe it's Andy Roberts but there is a resemblance.

Apparently a real nwobhm band took their name from toad the wet sprocket
They were American - not British. And they were REM-style 'alt rock' - not heavy metal at all.
