A shame that the FT-17 wasn't mentioned considering how it was the first tank that looked like what we think of as a tank. All the same though, this is really awesome, and I hope to see more of this in the future.
Yep, I agree, FT-17 set the benchmark for all modern tanks to come, and it was a superb light tank of the period too. Plus it's soo damn Cute! I just want to hug it and pet it on the turret, such a good boy.
I mean the FT-17 was the first to have been set up like the modern tanks we know. Surely didn't look like it, however the driver front, combat center and engine back was pioneered by the FT-17
they also forgot about the austrian "Burstyn Motorgeschütz" from 1911/12 It was even designed for crossing trenches and had a rotatable turret. In my eyes the only true first tank

And not only that, it was also the most produced tank from the Great War, 3700 of them, that's more than the Germans and Brits combined. Another thing they missed, Czechoslovakia had a decent tank production just before the war, the Germans used quite a lot of Panzer 35(t)'s and 38(t)'s well into 1941 until their own tank production finally caught up!
Couldn't agree more. It set the standard for most tanks put into service: A fully rotating turret; driver in the front, fighting compartment in the middle and engine compartment in the rear. Absolute unit of a little tank.

Actually, the replaceability of the M4 was quite comforting to Allied tank crews as it was the American Sherman that was over engineered, particularly in service to maximizing crew survivability. Anecdotally, there was one particular crew that ended up losing 3 tanks to enemy action, only to return to base to pick up a new tank each time.
Only 2500 Sherman crew died in WW2. It has the best crew survival rates. The T34 was unreliable and killed it's crew. Probably the second most overrated tank ever after the Tiger. At the end of the day trained tankers are the most precious resource in armored warfare, the tank that protects that best is the best tank.
Especially since T-34s usually don't have spall liners the whole WW2, a non-penetrating shot for a Sherman is a very deadly metal shatter to T-34 crews. Soviet crews were relatively expendable since they are easily replaced anyway.
Just compare the numbers The Eastern Front had 6 million Germans and 9 million Soviet soldiers over the course of 4 years The United States had and the Allies landed 300 thousand soldiers in Normandy. At the same time, the operation was clearly planned by a member of the Kuklusklan movement
I've heard one British tank vet say that he was in his 5th tank when WW2 ended. He also said the British didn't get a decent tank until *_after_* the war.

The Tiger 2, like the first tiger, is a mobile armored tank destroyer designed to cover the fronts, of course, it looks impressive, but in fact it is not a tank in the standard sense, and it would be more useful from Japanese medium tanks of the latest modifications, and, by the way, if I agree with the author of the video about Italian tanks. With just how much it gets wrong I'm not suprised. Like how it never touches on the long barrel revolution and it mentions the importance whilst degrading the very tanks which inspired it. Or how it quite litterally makes it look like the maus was anything more than 2 prototypes and actually saw service (neither of which is true and if we compare it to other german prototype programs it's obvious how little attention it was given). Or how it perpetuates myths about german manufacturing (which is sad because the importance of allied bombings and the supply situation almost never gets stated) Honestly I might have to do a full writeup.
Yep, but it use very inflamable fuel and the shell compartment where not very well protected. Not for nothing that one of the sherman nickname was bronson. Shermans was just super easy to blew up.

Also sherman is not that easy to blew up, study says they have similar explosion rate to other tanks of similar class or size at the time (Except the one british used as they have the brightest idea to overload the tank with ammo and still wonder why their tanks explosing everywhere) even an account from Russian that have Hero of the Soviet honor that use Sherman says he was pinned down while using his Sherman once from german attacks but his Sherman survives despite receiving multiple hits.

I’m sad you guys didn’t mention one of the best tanks from WW1 (and my personal favorite) the French FT-17 Rennault, it was one of the first tanks that looked like a modern tank (outward treads, single barrel on a turret that was either a 8mm machine gun or a 37mm cannon), and one of the first mass produced tanks, but nevertheless great video!
I think you made a mistake. The Renault was armed with either a single barrel cannon or a machine gun. We hadn’t really figured out how to put those two together at the time, and it’s not like there was enough space in the turret anyway.

I really like the styling of these videos! After watching, I think some other tanks should have been mentioned such as: - Vezdekhod (First motorised armoured tank prototype) - Renault FT tank (First tank to have a fully rotating turret) - Char 2C (Largest operational tank)
Tanks won't be obsolete, it'll adapt and improve over the years just like infantry and perhaps aircraft. People have said that since World War 1 yet main battle tanks are still relevant in the modern battlefield, albeit with improvements and newer technology.

Im quite disappointed that they failed to mention the Rennault tank the French were fielding during WW1. Their design basically inspired future tank designs in the following years of history. Edit: Eyyy why people fighting in my comments?
The animation is gold, however the writting is really, really bad. It feels like they copy & pasted some biased british/american article, inserted some old myths and as you said above, completely forgot about the really important designs like the FT-17, T-55 and the introduction of ERAs.
they post like every month, if you aren't satisfied with it why are you watching em? if you want those many tanks watch a full tank documentary telling all the tanks in history, they aren't national geographic.
Yep, they even forgot to mention that the French had superior tanks during the start of WW2 but didn't know how to incorporate them in their armed forces.
Good video but it's sad that France isn't mentioned when it was the first country to develop a "modern tank" with 360° turret and tracks, the succesful Renault FT-17. We had pretty nice design during the WWII and the Cold War too (B1 bis, AMX 13,...)
it's not a bad turret configuration the question is Why did we built Oscilation turrets? Oscilating turrets have his advantages like placement saver, smaller size and could on certain tanks equipped with autoloader so on lighter tanks ist an absolute monster killer (see the ebr in WT annoying) but on heavy tanks in another hand is pointless, poor elevation degrees @@latch9781
@@latch9781Oscillating turrets were the best design at that time, plus the French did come up with other amazing things during that time. In my opinion Amx 30 is also a superior counterpart than the German leopard 1.

А на Украине - зыбкая почва и деревья - они проваливаются и не могут использовать свою оптику максимально эффективно, а поддержки у них вообще никакой нет. И экипажи на них не обучены - управлять танком можно научиться очень быстро, но вот вести бой - это нужны годы обучения.

Shame they didn't mention French tanks as the Renault FT changed the conception of tanks for the end of WW1 and WW2. For those wondering it had the 1st turret that could rotate and needed only 2 soldiers to operate. It is considered as the 1st "modern" tank Or the FCM 2C that needed 13 soldiers to operate but was a slow monster

3:55 The reason why Japan and Italy were not good at building tank was that they were facing different enemies. In the 1930s and before WW2, both Japan and Italy were against relatively weaker countries. In the 1930s, Japan was against Chinese who did not have enough explosives or tanks to destroy Japanese tanks. Italy was against Ethiopian who also did not have enough explosives or tanks to destroy Italian tanks. Because of these, both countries did not feel the necessity to build more durable and powerful tanks because their light tanks were enough to against pre-WW2 enemies. While, the UK, US, USSR, and Germany had to build more durable and powerful tanks to defeat powerful enemies who were euqal foe each other. Moreover, there were some limitations in production, and engineering. Major powerful countries of WW2 had enough production capacity and engineering. While, Japan were lack at production capacity and engineering, and Italy was lack at production capacity.
To also follow up Italy was expecting combat in mountain terrain(but ended up in the desert) and the Japanese were fighting in island jungle thus lightweight/easy to maneuver tanks made more sense than heavy armored tanks, also the Japanese was aiming for a naval victory thus Battleships Aircraft Carriers and Torpedoes were prioritized over tanks.
Plus the Japanese tanks usually were required to be able to perform amphibious landings or at least brought on shore by a smaller landing craft, which limited their weight and therefore armor and gun caliber

Fun fact. The name tank was supposed to be only a cover for the first tanks. Many of the soldiers who saw them covered assumed they were water tanks and that’s what command stuck with. It could have been anything. Maybe it could have been called “big metal box with guns that may or may not break down or explode”.
It's not the father of French tanks in fact there was other before it but it is the father of modern tanks with a 360° turret and an engine in the back but you are right tho there should have been at least one French tanks since they were some of the biggest designer of those

Not every German tank was over-engineered and produced in small numbers. The StuGIII was the most produced German tank because it was very cheap and efficient. The reason why German tanks kept getting bigger was, that initially this strategy was very successful. The Tiger 1 was the first heavy tank and had no opponents. But at a certain point, size becomes a disadvantage. So this strategy didn't work anymore. If you compare numbers then you also have to consider the economic strength of the countries.
Minor Correction: Heavy tanks like the Tiger never technically stopped working, so much as they became tactically redundant decades later. The US and USSR both adopted version of their own during the Cold War. Germany's issues during WW2 largely stem from its resource poverty. It never had the fuel reserves to function as a modern mechanized army in the way that the US, UK and USSR did. So, I guess they kinda did stop working, but in a more literal sense than you seem to imply.
@@Kingfisher_2376The key to German heavy tanks was reliable logistics and maintenance. A dedicated tank regiment with excellent radio based coordination and proper support was expected to punch through the enemy lines and wreak havoc whilst mechanised and motorised troops followed up. This is a doctrine that is still used to this day, but what Germany suffered in WW2 was the horrible state of their logistics. Not only they had sabotaged production lines and faulty supply points, their comms were also tapped in late war meaning that any and all moves they made were known to their enemies. Also, the lost of air power was one of the biggest damnings to happen to them. With the threat of getting annihilated from above, german armour was unable to play any active roles during daytime and had to move under the cover of darkness. The last bit may also be where the term 'Army of the Night' became popularised from.
The Tiger 1 was a good heavy tank but it was too heavy and over engineered compared the sherman or t34. Plus, as early as Kursk the Soviets had devised ways to kill or disable Tigers. Anti tank trenches, anti tank mines, new Ptab anti tank bomblets dropped by Il-2s, and positioning t34s, anti tank guns and spgs into positions where they could shoot Tigers in the much thinner side or rear armor. Also, don't forget that after Kursk things like the Sherman firefly, Sherman 76, M36 jackson, Su-85, Su-100, Isu-122 and Is-2s started rolling onto the battlefield. Also also, the germans forgot to provide enough recovery vehicles in the event a tiger was disabled or broke down.

You forgot to tell about french tanks who introduced a lot of new technologie before the WWII, like during the great war with the renault ft 17, it was far more eficient than other tanks, to big and slow, and the b1 bis who were facing easely german tanks at the begining of WWII, the only problem were the use of and the sabotage in production.
I already knew quite a bit of this information (still learned quite a bit though, like where the name of the tank comes from), but I love these animations and the commentary!

I’m disappointed the French tanks aren’t portrayed when they was innovative and effectives the FT17 literally created the true design of tanks and ww2 French tanks where also the best of their time ( but they had problems of doctrines and high commands )
Yup not sure how France wasn't one of the main tank producing nations. They certainly produced more and more capable tanks than the Japanese or Italians that's for certain. The Chars were impressive tanks, just sadly the French army was stuck in WW1 mode.
@@stephen4121 France had a pretty big anti war sentiment during the interwar. So why would we have produced massive quantitities of tank that we wouldn’t have needed in an ideal world ? And by the time we realised we needed more tanks, it was too late anyway. One of said chars, the B1-bis had been in development since 1920. Very much stuck as a WW1 type of design. And intended to be used in a trench war scenario. It was still a nightmare for every german unlucky enough to encounter one during the short lived conflict. The only counter for the B1-bis the german had at the during the rather short war against my country was the 88mm anti air gun, whose effectiveness as an anti tank weapon was only discovered by pure accident. Probably a gun crew saw a B1 approaching, panicked, pointed the gun at the tank in desperation and fired. In terms of effectiveness, think about this: At one point, a single B1 tore apart a small german armored column. 13 tanks destroyed in a single engagement. And not a single penetrating german shot out of the dozens that hit the aforementioned B1. They were so good the germans salvaged the ones they could, and stuck a flamethrower where the 75mm was. You know, for extra nastiness. And then threw those at the soviets. To quote a comic about it, it was a « slug with enough armour to pass as a swiss safe, and with sharp teeth ». Comic is named « The butcher of Stonne », if you are interested.

The "Char de Bataille" trials was in 1924, and the B1 was develloped from its contestants in the beginning of the 30', it wasn't made to reach trenches, but instead to assault fortifications like the Siegfried line and to be used as support for the Maginot Line guns.

I'm blown away by the animation. I'm a huge tank nerd so I already know all this stuff (including the handful of incorrect things in the video), but I kept watching because of the gorgeous animation.
I do feel like it'd have been interesting to mention the French FT-17, given it was the first produced "normal" turreted design. Nonetheless an interesting video : D
I like the little touch from Red Alert 3 : the Soviet March OST at the end. For the last question, I think the tank still has some use : overall speed in nearly any terrain, better range than the majority of infantry-carried weapons, don't care about enemy bullets (because you can't expect to see every enemy soldier to have a rocket-launcher, so good chance to see them retreat if not well equiped enough), relative resistance against explosions (to a certain degree, of course) compare to civilian building/makeshift trench and defence, capacity to rapidly take and fortify a position,... If I can suggest other videos, you can definitely talk about the evolution of airplane (+ zeppelin and helicopter ?) and the evolution of naval battle (early greek, chinese, british,... until today). Not the most original propositions, I agree, but you can definitely put some explosions in the video. ^^
Lol, nonsense. Crew survivability is a key features western tanks have been designed for since the cold war. Meanwhile russian tanks hold vraious world records in turret throwing.

15 T-14s won't do much. As it is right now, unless total war unleashes again, IFVs are arguably better than proper tanks. The reason most big-bad-cannon tanks were made was to counter other tanks. So in an infantry support scenario, light IFVs with repeating autocannons are much better to field than other tanks. Due to the amount of AT missiles being used (and how most go through the roof), IFVs are just better for now. Tanks will get to shine when there's enough of them to guarantee Tank v Tank battles again.

They're one of the most modern tanks and they're reported to perform as excepted, good. People who judge military vehicles because they've seen videos of them being destroyed deserve prison. You don't know what the tank in question achieved before being destroyed. The same thing applies to Russian tanks.

I actually quite like the fact that they brought back the Panther name for one of their tanks; Germany's naming schedule makes it immediately known whos tank it is, and they have always used predatory feline animals for their tank names. To bring back the Panther is an honor to the tank that came before it and the crews that manned it, regardless of what government used it.
It's nevertheless unfortunate that they chose the name of a tank that was activly used by the Nazis during WW2, especially if you consider that there are other "predatory feline animals" whose names could have been used. Löwe (Lion) was the name of an experiemental design during WW2, while Jaguar (both the same in English and German, so a huge plus) wasn't used as a name for a tank during WW2 at all. Looking at all these facts, the decision to reuse the name "Panther" looks odd at best. Considering that Germany is currently again frowned upon for taking a leading role in Europe, it's downright distasteful - and I say that as a German.

And not only that, it was also the most produced tank from the Great War, 3700 of them, that's more than the Germans and Brits combined.
Another thing they missed, Czechoslovakia had a decent tank production just before the war, the Germans used quite a lot of Panzer 35(t)'s and 38(t)'s well into 1941 until their own tank production finally caught up!

Actually, the replaceability of the M4 was quite comforting to Allied tank crews as it was the American Sherman that was over engineered, particularly in service to maximizing crew survivability. Anecdotally, there was one particular crew that ended up losing 3 tanks to enemy action, only to return to base to pick up a new tank each time.
Only 2500 Sherman crew died in WW2. It has the best crew survival rates. The T34 was unreliable and killed it's crew. Probably the second most overrated tank ever after the Tiger. At the end of the day trained tankers are the most precious resource in armored warfare, the tank that protects that best is the best tank.
Especially since T-34s usually don't have spall liners the whole WW2, a non-penetrating shot for a Sherman is a very deadly metal shatter to T-34 crews. Soviet crews were relatively expendable since they are easily replaced anyway.
Just compare the numbers
The Eastern Front had 6 million Germans and 9 million Soviet soldiers over the course of 4 years
The United States had and the Allies landed 300 thousand soldiers in Normandy. At the same time, the operation was clearly planned by a member of the Kuklusklan movement

He also said the British didn't get a decent tank until *_after_* the war.

With just how much it gets wrong I'm not suprised. Like how it never touches on the long barrel revolution and it mentions the importance whilst degrading the very tanks which inspired it. Or how it quite litterally makes it look like the maus was anything more than 2 prototypes and actually saw service (neither of which is true and if we compare it to other german prototype programs it's obvious how little attention it was given). Or how it perpetuates myths about german manufacturing (which is sad because the importance of allied bombings and the supply situation almost never gets stated)

I’m sad you guys didn’t mention one of the best tanks from WW1 (and my personal favorite) the French FT-17 Rennault, it was one of the first tanks that looked like a modern tank (outward treads, single barrel on a turret that was either a 8mm machine gun or a 37mm cannon), and one of the first mass produced tanks, but nevertheless great video!
I think you made a mistake. The Renault was armed with either a single barrel cannon or a machine gun. We hadn’t really figured out how to put those two together at the time, and it’s not like there was enough space in the turret anyway.

Tanks won't be obsolete, it'll adapt and improve over the years just like infantry and perhaps aircraft. People have said that since World War 1 yet main battle tanks are still relevant in the modern battlefield, albeit with improvements and newer technology.
It's just that Russia doesn't know how to use Soviet tanks. The KF-51 tank can smoke both tank and drone on the bbq.

The reason why Japan and Italy were not good at building tank was that they were facing different enemies. In the 1930s and before WW2, both Japan and Italy were against relatively weaker countries. In the 1930s, Japan was against Chinese who did not have enough explosives or tanks to destroy Japanese tanks. Italy was against Ethiopian who also did not have enough explosives or tanks to destroy Italian tanks. Because of these, both countries did not feel the necessity to build more durable and powerful tanks because their light tanks were enough to against pre-WW2 enemies. While, the UK, US, USSR, and Germany had to build more durable and powerful tanks to defeat powerful enemies who were euqal foe each other.
Moreover, there were some limitations in production, and engineering. Major powerful countries of WW2 had enough production capacity and engineering. While, Japan were lack at production capacity and engineering, and Italy was lack at production capacity.
To also follow up Italy was expecting combat in mountain terrain(but ended up in the desert) and the Japanese were fighting in island jungle thus lightweight/easy to maneuver tanks made more sense than heavy armored tanks, also the Japanese was aiming for a naval victory thus Battleships Aircraft Carriers and Torpedoes were prioritized over tanks.
Plus the Japanese tanks usually were required to be able to perform amphibious landings or at least brought on shore by a smaller landing craft, which limited their weight and therefore armor and gun caliber

Fun fact. The name tank was supposed to be only a cover for the first tanks. Many of the soldiers who saw them covered assumed they were water tanks and that’s what command stuck with.
It could have been anything. Maybe it could have been called “big metal box with guns that may or may not break down or explode”.

It's not the father of French tanks in fact there was other before it but it is the father of modern tanks with a 360° turret and an engine in the back but you are right tho there should have been at least one French tanks since they were some of the biggest designer of those

Not every German tank was over-engineered and produced in small numbers. The StuGIII was the most produced German tank because it was very cheap and efficient. The reason why German tanks kept getting bigger was, that initially this strategy was very successful. The Tiger 1 was the first heavy tank and had no opponents. But at a certain point, size becomes a disadvantage. So this strategy didn't work anymore. If you compare numbers then you also have to consider the economic strength of the countries.
Minor Correction: Heavy tanks like the Tiger never technically stopped working, so much as they became tactically redundant decades later. The US and USSR both adopted version of their own during the Cold War.
Germany's issues during WW2 largely stem from its resource poverty. It never had the fuel reserves to function as a modern mechanized army in the way that the US, UK and USSR did.
So, I guess they kinda did stop working, but in a more literal sense than you seem to imply.
@@Kingfisher_2376The key to German heavy tanks was reliable logistics and maintenance. A dedicated tank regiment with excellent radio based coordination and proper support was expected to punch through the enemy lines and wreak havoc whilst mechanised and motorised troops followed up.
This is a doctrine that is still used to this day, but what Germany suffered in WW2 was the horrible state of their logistics. Not only they had sabotaged production lines and faulty supply points, their comms were also tapped in late war meaning that any and all moves they made were known to their enemies.
Also, the lost of air power was one of the biggest damnings to happen to them. With the threat of getting annihilated from above, german armour was unable to play any active roles during daytime and had to move under the cover of darkness.
The last bit may also be where the term 'Army of the Night' became popularised from.
The Tiger 1 was a good heavy tank but it was too heavy and over engineered compared the sherman or t34.
Plus, as early as Kursk the Soviets had devised ways to kill or disable Tigers.
Anti tank trenches, anti tank mines, new Ptab anti tank bomblets dropped by Il-2s, and positioning t34s, anti tank guns and spgs into positions where they could shoot Tigers in the much thinner side or rear armor.
Also, don't forget that after Kursk things like the Sherman firefly, Sherman 76, M36 jackson, Su-85, Su-100, Isu-122 and Is-2s started rolling onto the battlefield.
Also also, the germans forgot to provide enough recovery vehicles in the event a tiger was disabled or broke down.

You forgot to tell about french tanks who introduced a lot of new technologie before the WWII, like during the great war with the renault ft 17, it was far more eficient than other tanks, to big and slow, and the b1 bis who were facing easely german tanks at the begining of WWII, the only problem were the use of and the sabotage in production.

I’m disappointed the French tanks aren’t portrayed when they was innovative and effectives the FT17 literally created the true design of tanks and ww2 French tanks where also the best of their time ( but they had problems of doctrines and high commands )
Yup not sure how France wasn't one of the main tank producing nations. They certainly produced more and more capable tanks than the Japanese or Italians that's for certain. The Chars were impressive tanks, just sadly the French army was stuck in WW1 mode.
@@stephen4121 France had a pretty big anti war sentiment during the interwar. So why would we have produced massive quantitities of tank that we wouldn’t have needed in an ideal world ? And by the time we realised we needed more tanks, it was too late anyway.
One of said chars, the B1-bis had been in development since 1920. Very much stuck as a WW1 type of design. And intended to be used in a trench war scenario. It was still a nightmare for every german unlucky enough to encounter one during the short lived conflict.
The only counter for the B1-bis the german had at the during the rather short war against my country was the 88mm anti air gun, whose effectiveness as an anti tank weapon was only discovered by pure accident. Probably a gun crew saw a B1 approaching, panicked, pointed the gun at the tank in desperation and fired.
In terms of effectiveness, think about this: At one point, a single B1 tore apart a small german armored column. 13 tanks destroyed in a single engagement. And not a single penetrating german shot out of the dozens that hit the aforementioned B1.
They were so good the germans salvaged the ones they could, and stuck a flamethrower where the 75mm was. You know, for extra nastiness. And then threw those at the soviets.
To quote a comic about it, it was a « slug with enough armour to pass as a swiss safe, and with sharp teeth ». Comic is named « The butcher of Stonne », if you are interested.

The "Char de Bataille" trials was in 1924, and the B1 was develloped from its contestants in the beginning of the 30', it wasn't made to reach trenches, but instead to assault fortifications like the Siegfried line and to be used as support for the Maginot Line guns.
France also producted more than 1000 infantry tank in 1940 and 500 cavalry tanks, along side many armored cars
I absolutely love the models and animation in this, being both an animator and taking a huge interest in the history of both world wars!

For the last question, I think the tank still has some use : overall speed in nearly any terrain, better range than the majority of infantry-carried weapons, don't care about enemy bullets (because you can't expect to see every enemy soldier to have a rocket-launcher, so good chance to see them retreat if not well equiped enough), relative resistance against explosions (to a certain degree, of course) compare to civilian building/makeshift trench and defence, capacity to rapidly take and fortify a position,...
If I can suggest other videos, you can definitely talk about the evolution of airplane (+ zeppelin and helicopter ?) and the evolution of naval battle (early greek, chinese, british,... until today).
Not the most original propositions, I agree, but you can definitely put some explosions in the video. ^^

15 T-14s won't do much. As it is right now, unless total war unleashes again, IFVs are arguably better than proper tanks. The reason most big-bad-cannon tanks were made was to counter other tanks. So in an infantry support scenario, light IFVs with repeating autocannons are much better to field than other tanks. Due to the amount of AT missiles being used (and how most go through the roof), IFVs are just better for now. Tanks will get to shine when there's enough of them to guarantee Tank v Tank battles again.

They're one of the most modern tanks and they're reported to perform as excepted, good. People who judge military vehicles because they've seen videos of them being destroyed deserve prison. You don't know what the tank in question achieved before being destroyed. The same thing applies to Russian tanks.

@@ancalagon1144 with open terrain, artillery and most importantly the long range anti missile Ka-52 that makes it look bad. Leopard 2 variation is a good tank but the doctrines they are applying without proper air cover is suicidal. I guess small drones really can decide the tides for now.
I actually quite like the fact that they brought back the Panther name for one of their tanks; Germany's naming schedule makes it immediately known whos tank it is, and they have always used predatory feline animals for their tank names. To bring back the Panther is an honor to the tank that came before it and the crews that manned it, regardless of what government used it.
It's nevertheless unfortunate that they chose the name of a tank that was activly used by the Nazis during WW2, especially if you consider that there are other "predatory feline animals" whose names could have been used. Löwe (Lion) was the name of an experiemental design during WW2, while Jaguar (both the same in English and German, so a huge plus) wasn't used as a name for a tank during WW2 at all. Looking at all these facts, the decision to reuse the name "Panther" looks odd at best. Considering that Germany is currently again frowned upon for taking a leading role in Europe, it's downright distasteful - and I say that as a German.

Theres nothing wrong with taking pride in certain aspects of your history, especially small things like the performance and name of a tank. No one is telling you to strap on hugo boss and goose step around the parade square, but an acknowledgement of German tank design history is not distasteful.
It's just surprising they'd want to reuse the name. I see nothing wrong with it, but the German government is pretty touchy about WW2.
