I'm not looking to do any fancy Phil type stuff, and my course doesn't have a lot of situations where more loft would be needed. Cheers.
Great video, Alex. I carry 48, 52 and 56. I do wonder about getting a 60 but over the last 12 months I can think of only a couple of times when I would have wanted a 60. I also keep thinking about Seve saying a 56 was plenty - wish I had his short game! 😁

Hi Alex, a great and timely video for me (and millions of others). Thank you as I felt like you were talking to me (as well as others asking the same questions). Extremely helpful especially the part about your most lofted club and the importance of having groves fully on the face (I had never thought about this part). Thanks again and as always, keep up the great daily tips. 👍😎🇦🇺
My wedge play is the main reason my handicap is as low as it is. Currently play T100 in PW (46) , 50, and SM8 54D and 58M. Can hit PW anywhere from 120-135 carry, 50 from 110-125, 54 from 95-110, and 58 all the way up to 100. Pitch exclusively with 58, chip 90% with 54, 58 only for lobs and flops.
I have 3 wedges with 5 degree gaps, GW-48, SW-53, LW-58 and my 9i is 43. The PW is in the bin... most golfers overlook the odd setup with equal loft increments when PW and GW are usually same length, and then SW is much shorter.
I for myself building my bag kind of around this premise myself. I’m going to completely rebuild the bag, as wedges are chipped irons are kind of off, and I’ve got good woods but they’ve had some love. I’m going to build wedges first. 60,56,52,48,44 5 wedges. Should get me 130-80 in about 10 yard increments. 9i 40 at 140 8i 36 at 150 7i at 32 at 160 6i at 28 at 170 5i at 20 at 180-190 5 wood around 16 210 3 wood around 13 at 230 Driver at 9-10 at 260 And a good putter. But I can’t afford everything at once so I’m going to buy my wedges and keep them fresh, buy my irons, then buy the woods maybe over a 2 year time frame and play those for 5-10 years I hope. But I’m keep the other clubs as the degrees are the same in case I need to pull it and get one fixed or something
I have 3 and I probably only need 1 and a chipper. Right now I have a 45, 50 and 56. I'm willing to bet I could do just as well, if not better, with the 56 and a chipper.

3 Vokeys and a set wedge for me Alex. My set wedge came in at 47 degrees so I had it made 46. The 50/56/62. They have Project XLz 6.0 shafts in them same as my irons for continuity. The wedges are quarter inch shorter than each other. F grind on my 50 and M grind on the other 2. My teaching pro has set me up brilliantly with them. No full swings at all with the Vokeys if I can help it. So the 50 degree goes 120 yards mid/high trajectory with three quarters swing and half swing 105 low trajectory, 56 goes 110 mid/high and 95 mid/low trajectory, 62 goes 100 three quarters high trajectory and 80 yards half swing on a slightly lower trajectory. I get on with these gappings because they give me simple yardages and a choice of trajectories. The set wedge is a solid 135 yards and because of the traditional loft on my 9 iron it's also a great option at wedge distance. I don't have good enough feel to play just 2 wedges like 52/58. I can play most bunker shots without having to open the face of a 56 because of the 62 and chipping with the 50 degrees is easy because of the grind.
@@AlexElliottGolf 62 degree gets me out of so much trouble. Short side, bunkers, over trees, 30 yards when you're almost too close, uphill shots you need to stop quickly. So good.

I want a 60, 56,52,48 and 44. Lob sand gap and I guess that’s 2 pw. A 9-5i and 5 3 wood and driver and putter that’s 14 right now I only have 11 clubs, I don’t even play all of those I’ll play about 5 on any given round. Usually a 56, 60, pw 9 6 driver and 3 wood. So 7 clubs. I’ll only use the others in certain situations because my yardages out are consistent par 3s are consistent
I’ve just ordered 3 specialist wedges in 50, 55 and 60 degrees to blend with my 45 degree pitching wedge. I would rarely play a full shot with a sand or lob wedge. I’d prefer to knock down a pitch or gap wedge for a bit more control (in theory)
Currently have 2 wedges. I ordered a set of irons that are arriving next week. I thought I ordered this set to have 4 wedges, but it turns out I'll be getting 3. Need to decide down the road if I need to add a LW for flop shots or if I should use the SW for flops.
@@AlexElliottGolf Thanks! I've gone with the Ping G425. When the irons arrive, I'll have 12 clubs in my bag: 3 woods (driver, 5w & 7w), 0 hybrids, 5 irons (5i through 9i), 3 wedges (PW, GW & SW), 1 putter. Might add a hybrid and/or LW depending on gaps and shot needs.
i have a PW 46, Gap wedge 52, Sand wedge 58. the 4 wedge gives me indecision on the course with all the options and I don't like that feeling, so I make it simple. gives me the option of 3 iron and 5 wood which I like both
Why do you have indecision?? I can hit a 60 metre shot with 3 different clubs LW 100% PW Back to waist high and then a shortened follow through SW Back to Sholuder Height I ain't indecisive I pick a shot and hit it
Hi Alex, what about bounce on wedges? Can u go into more details on selecting bounce. Should they be the same, does course conditions play a factor, wet dry. Lies. I'm really confused on how to set up my wedges. Thanks
@@AlexElliottGolf thanks, I watched the video and enjoyed the drill, but my question was about the amount of bounce on the club . There is so many combinations of loft and bounce , how can somebody figure out what is best for them, without having to buy several wedges and just guessing. Thanks
I was playing with 2 wedges for a while, my pw and 60°. 60° went as far as my SW but I didn't like how that club felt. I spent a good bit practicing different type of shots with my 60°, now I got myself a 54° cleveland and trying to make that my number 1 wedge
4 in my bag - my 9 iron is 41.5 degrees & prioritising my short game means I prefer a 4th wedge rather than an additional longer club, currently using 46/52/56/60 - I love the 52 around the green & prefer the added flex the 60 gives me rather than a 58 especially delicate little chips. Great video, thx, think your new voice spelling software might need a tweak👍
@@AlexElliottGolf 5 iron in to 4 hybrid / 3 hybrid / 3 wood / driver - top 3 work great, 4 hybrid (G425) is 1 round old so early days but initial gapping either side on mevo & Toptracer look promising - the gap between it & 5 iron is most likely to be the problem if there is one, so I may need to loft up the hybrid. Was initially looking at 2 hybrid rather than 3 but it ran too close to my 3 wood
When I bought my G410's I got 6 to 9 irons as I had 48, 52, 56, 60 wedges. I had to buy a G410 wedge as these clubs are one club stronger than my old I3's.
How many woods/hybrids should you have? I’m a VERY high handicapper (36) so I want forgiveness and distance! I currently just have a driver and a 5 hybrid then 3-SW Irons
The new sets, for instance, the Titleist t-300s I bought this fall, almost forces you to carry 5. I really don't want to do this, but the PW is 43 and the gap is 48. My previous set was 45 and 50, which I had a 56 and a 60. Titleist sells a w2 for the set at 53. So now I either have to buy a 52/53 and 58 or carry 5 wedges. It kind a pisses me off as I don't want to carry 5 wedges, I'd rather carry an extra hybrid. I know, not your problem, just stating that with companies strengthening their lofts, it put some of us in a bind.
@@AlexElliottGolf well, I like the clubs, I understand what they're doing by strengthening the lofts, they have been doing it for years, but I don't like the fact that I now have to figure out what to do about my wedges. As I stated previously I think I'm going to add a 54 and 58 and let the 58 be my SW and lose the 56 and 60. Should I do 10 degrees of bounce on the 58. It is really a shame as I do like my 56. What do you think?
Tried 4 wedges system ( 46 , 50, 54 and 58) a few years ago but didn’t like it / didn’t need it. Can play all shots I need with 46, 52 and 58 (with the right bounce and grind) and have some extra room at the higher end of the bag. But it off course all depends on the player.
@@AlexElliottGolf at this moment I play JPX 921 Tour 46 PW , 52 10 degrees S grind Callaway MD5 jaws and 58 10 degrees full toe Callaway Jaws. Short (wedge) game and putting is a stronger part of my game.
@@BuffaloBarber24 Hi Chuck , for me there is no problem with 6 degrees gapping with wedges. But may differ from person to person of course. As I mentioned I want to have more options at the higher end of the bag and didn’t find hat 4 wedges were necessary. And 50 degrees would make a too much a gap with my 58.
Weird one here...please help. I bought p790s which seem to have hot faces...so I have 5 wedges. P790 pitching wedge-45 deg-150-155yds. P790 Attack wedge-50 deg-135-140. Recently added a cleveland cbx2 52deg to fill a gap I had. Goes 125 everytime. Cbx2 56 deg-110-115 cbx2 60 deg-95-100. Has anyone else seen similar results with th p790 wedges maybe going a bit far for the lofts or is it possibly another issue? Just seems weird that the yardage gaps are consistent even though there are only 2 degrees difference from p790 to cbx.
Hmmm this is a strange one - could be down to what loft your are delivering at impact. Ow oils say as long as the yardages are consistent that’s all that matters. I hope this helps
@@AlexElliottGolf No The thinking is I gonna be more successful adding a 62 degree wedge and hitting nailed on 45 metres shots than trying to hit "HERO" shots 160metres with a 5 Wood
I’ll tell you how you know when you have too many wedges. When you don’t use them all. Also a PW isn’t a wedge. It’s a 10 iron. If it looks like your irons it’s an iron, no matter what’s stamped on the bottom. The difference between an iron and a wedge is the design of the head.
I currently have 4 wedges in the bag - PW (44), GW (49), 56 and 60. I also have a 52 but found that my gapping in the summer was too tight between it and the GW and 56. However, stats on Arcoss recently have seen the two widen and I'm thinking it might go back in but not sure about taking out the 60 for those 'specialist' shots 😂 especially as something still has to give to get my 3 wood back in the bag too 😂
Hi Alex, After today it is all bullshit. I went back to my 20 year old diawa clubs. Used the pitching wedge probably a 45 degree for every shot under 120 yards. Did not fail me. Could use it to do anything way better than the 56 and 60. Late 1990's through to 2010 was the epitome when it came to golf club design. Nowadays it is all marketing bullshit. And don't get me started on drivers.
Alex, I love the videos, but I dislike the addition of the words showing up. It is somewhat disconcerting, I wish you would just use the captions to describe what you are using.
@@AlexElliottGolf I agree but in my book, Wedges start at 52 (maybe 51) I think people worry about having too many wedges when in fact they don't. They just have irons filling in the gap between their set PW to 52 due to ridiculous jacked lofts these days.
Rory carries a 54 and 58 than a pitching wedge. As a matter of fact most pros only carry to wedges outside of their pitching wedge. 4 wedges is to many damn wedges. Learn to use the bounce and open the face for different t trajectories and distances!

i have a PW 46, Gap wedge 52, Sand wedge 58. the 4 wedge gives me indecision on the course with all the options and I don't like that feeling, so I make it simple. gives me the option of 3 iron and 5 wood which I like both
Why do you have indecision??
I can hit a 60 metre shot with 3 different clubs
LW 100%
PW Back to waist high and then a shortened follow through
SW Back to Sholuder Height
I ain't indecisive
I pick a shot and hit it
You don’t find that there’s too much of a gap between your 46 and 52?
Hi Alex, what about bounce on wedges? Can u go into more details on selecting bounce. Should they be the same, does course conditions play a factor, wet dry. Lies. I'm really confused on how to set up my wedges. Thanks
Hi, really good point here see this video for this th-cam.com/video/e4w35CyxVAA/w-d-xo.html
@@AlexElliottGolf thanks, I watched the video and enjoyed the drill, but my question was about the amount of bounce on the club . There is so many combinations of loft and bounce , how can somebody figure out what is best for them, without having to buy several wedges and just guessing. Thanks
I carry 5 wedges....but I play Cobra Speedzone irons.....my pitching wedge is really a 9 iron and gap wedge is really a pitching wedge.
5 wedges including my pitching wedge! Love my short game!
nice what lofts do you have in your bag?
@@AlexElliottGolfPitching @44° after that I have a 48° 52° 56° and 60° all have their own little purpose in the bag 😁
I was playing with 2 wedges for a while, my pw and 60°. 60° went as far as my SW but I didn't like how that club felt. I spent a good bit practicing different type of shots with my 60°, now I got myself a 54° cleveland and trying to make that my number 1 wedge
Nice that’s great you have a good method
My PW is 45, GW 49, then I have a set of 52, 56, & 60. Probably going to swap those out this year for nicer wedges in 54 and 58
I think that is great gapping though Ross I would stick with the same lofts
4 in my bag - my 9 iron is 41.5 degrees & prioritising my short game means I prefer a 4th wedge rather than an additional longer club, currently using 46/52/56/60 - I love the 52 around the green & prefer the added flex the 60 gives me rather than a 58 especially delicate little chips. Great video, thx, think your new voice spelling software might need a tweak👍
What do you do at the top end of your bag??
Interesting thank you for sharing Christopher
How many woods/hybrids should you have? I’m a VERY high handicapper (36) so I want forgiveness and distance! I currently just have a driver and a 5 hybrid then 3-SW Irons
I would be looking at a few more hybrids at that top end over your bag there Tom. Maybe a 3 and 4 hybrid
@@AlexElliottGolf thank you! Loving your coaching and tips
Great tips Alex. I have 4 wedges.
Hi Wayne!!! Check out the community page…. I think you may have won….
@@AlexElliottGolf I don't know how to check the community page!
I carry three 46/6 , 52/9 , 58/14. I use the 46 ninety percent of the time. Cheer's
Iv 52 56 60 every 15 yards well done alex 👏 👍
Thank you Roy!! What brand are you using??
Wow that’s crazy!!! What do you think about manufacturers doing this?!
What combination do you prefer??
@@AlexElliottGolf at this moment I play JPX 921 Tour 46 PW , 52 10 degrees S grind Callaway MD5 jaws and 58 10 degrees full toe Callaway Jaws. Short (wedge) game and putting is a stronger part of my game.
@@Raymond-sj7cn you don’t find that there’s too big of a gap between 46 and 52? Why didn’t you go to 50 instead?
@@BuffaloBarber24 Hi Chuck , for me there is no problem with 6 degrees gapping with wedges. But may differ from person to person of course. As I mentioned I want to have more options at the higher end of the bag and didn’t find hat 4 wedges were necessary. And 50 degrees would make a too much a gap with my 58.
@@Raymond-sj7cn so 52 to 58 would be too big of a gap but 46 to 52 isn’t? That’s the same degree gap …
50deg Gap, 56 and 60.
4, stock T100s pw @44°, 50°08F, 54°10S, 60°04L
Lovely Neil!!!
4. 52, 56, 60 Bombtech
Degrease or degrees?
Can we discuss how the bounce on wedges effect the shot?
Yes what a great idea 💡
with the strong loft of my clubs i have to play 5 not including PW at 41°
PW and 56 deg does me, 9 hc
5… 45Pw 50Uw 54Sw 58Lw 61Lw
I can get by with 2 - 52 and 58, but most times I will have 50, 55, 60 in bag.
4 and I think that 5 might be useful
I see little need for a 3 Iron or a Hybrid
Do you carry a 5 wood??
@@AlexElliottGolf No
The thinking is I gonna be more successful adding a 62 degree wedge and hitting nailed on 45 metres shots than trying to hit "HERO" shots 160metres with a 5 Wood
I’ll tell you how you know when you have too many wedges. When you don’t use them all. Also a PW isn’t a wedge. It’s a 10 iron. If it looks like your irons it’s an iron, no matter what’s stamped on the bottom. The difference between an iron and a wedge is the design of the head.
for me its 48, 54, and 60, seem to do the job.
Nice that great! It’s important you use what works for you 💥
52 56 60. Seems to work well
Like it Chris - what brand are you using??
3 48 52 58.
Thank you Wayne!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
My clubs are so old there is no record of my pitching wedge loft
What clubs are you using??
@@AlexElliottGolf golden bear clubs
And don't get me started on drivers.
i have heard this be the case before! fair play to you, hope the tips help!
Alex, I love the videos, but I dislike the addition of the words showing up. It is somewhat disconcerting, I wish you would just use the captions to describe what you are using.
Hello Robert thank you for the feedback I’ll take this into account
First. 😁
Your PW is not a wedge.
I would say it has a massive influence on your non set wedges though
@@AlexElliottGolf I agree but in my book, Wedges start at 52 (maybe 51) I think people worry about having too many wedges when in fact they don't. They just have irons filling in the gap between their set PW to 52 due to ridiculous jacked lofts these days.
Rory carries a 54 and 58 than a pitching wedge. As a matter of fact most pros only carry to wedges outside of their pitching wedge. 4 wedges is to many damn wedges. Learn to use the bounce and open the face for different t trajectories and distances!
