David H. I was also there in 1974. Retired now but surgeon then, newly in practice. I was overwhelmed and still remember it as one of my favorite opera experiences. Scotto was fresh and young, Carreras at his peak.
Carreras has always been my favorite of the 3 T's. And certainly better looking of the 3 as well. Even though his voice changed later in his career, I still loved him. Scotto in her prime was great. A very intelligent singer.

I was at this performance. Carreras had been scheduled for all performances, but his arrival in San Francisco was delayed because of illness. Aragall and Merighi had performed in his place prior to this. It was an exciting performance, not just the singing, but the surprise, because I had not heard that Carreras had finally arrived. His San Francisco Opera debut had taken place the prior season as Rodolfo in "Boheme".

I have a Butterfly from around that time with Luis Lima and [my spelling] Yasuki Hyashi that was an "official" SF Opera recording intended for release on 'QXR and other like stations and the sound is notably better. Was this a "pirate" done from the audience? Is there an "official" version out there? Regardless: I'm on my second go through and it gets better. Grazie mille!
Scotto maravillosa, Carreras estaba en su esplendor vocal. Una pena que su declive fuera tan rápido incluso antes de la enfermedad. Tenía una bella voz pero los mismos defectos que Pippo a la hora de emitir la voz. Su plenitud vocal sólo duró unos 15 años.

Carreras was 28 when this was recorded. 28 years old and executing an incredible high C above a full orchestra. Absolutely incredible.
