Thanks for the video, putting grease on the rod to hold it up was key to making this job very easy! In my case I was able to install the plug after I installed the fuel pump. I also strongly recommend to fit a new rubber fuel line to the bottom of the fuel pump before installing the fuel pump in place. It’s very tight quarters when changing the pump under the car and pre installing the rubber fuel line will save you a lot of grief! Thanks again for the video, short and to the point!

I watched your video ,and with enough confidence, I swap out mine but with a little cursing and having a temper tantrum, I got it done...... thank you for this video.

Thanks for your help with this. I didn't realize there was a rod plug. Now i just wish i had open space to work on the stupid thing... (454 in a 23' sea ray isnt the easiest thing to work on but it sure is fun to drive!)

I picked up a truck for the fresh 396 BBC to use in my Chevelle
I’m pulling the motor - haven’t pulled one before
Question for you - I want to leave the 4 speed in it and remove engine only. Can I pull it by just removing bell housing and converter bolts? Thank you in advance!

Hey Chris, what size is that Allen wrench you used to install the plug on the bottom? Is it a square hole, that's what mine is... appreciate the help.

Does the rod have to come out? Do I have to unscrew that cap? I’m replacing it in a running and working engine .

Probably a little late on a reply but there is a bolt hole on the front of the block right where your pushrod is at. If you remove the bolt from it you can take one of the bolts from your old fuel pump while leaving the other bolt in pump tight and snug it up against the rod, not too tight and it will hold the rod in place.

That’s only on a small block. Holes are blind on a big block.

Don't smear grease all over the side, just put a dab on the end to stick it to the cam.

Mike Hernandez all you can do is put a gauge and check the fuel pressure

The mechanical fuel pump isn't supposed to respond to your pedal input. That is a process that is triggered by the turn of the engine to deliver fuel to the carburetor. The carburetor converts your pedal input into fuel shots to the engine.

I see your pump has a spring under the lever and that it's a precision manufacturer/brand. I have a 78 Coupe deVille and I too got a fuel pump from precision from O'REILLY but mine didn't come with that spring. I have replaced it twice because it starts to make a tapping ticking sound like a lifter noise but it's the fuel pump because soon as I replaced it with another the sound is no longer present. And unfortunately it's making that sound again. This time I ordered a fuel pump that has that spring under the arm no I'm hoping this will resolve it. In your opinion would the lack of no spring be the cause for a tapping/ticking noise?
