    I am the original owner of a 2002 Porsche Boxster S. I have sorted out all of the major issues RMS and IMS. Including replacing the plastic window and convertible top. Love your commentary.
    Keep up the good work. I will hold on to my 21 year old Boxster S. It is indeed a blast to drive on a Fall Sunday morning.

      Wow, that’s great that you have owned it from new and still enjoying it as a modern clsssic. I think they are fantastic cars and as you say, with any car, a bit of work required to keep them in tip top condition. Cheers, Phil

    A short lived rattle at start up is due to the hydraulic timing chain tensioners needing time to fill with oil and do their job. Lots of 986 and 996s are like that and it doesn't point to IMS issues. Taking the old oil filter apart after a service and looking for metal fragments or checking the amount of cam timing variance using a suitable CAN diagnostics tool are two ways to see if the bearing is starting to fail. Usually it goes all at once without prior warning. As someone else has pointed out its over hyped, though the 2.5 has the benefit of a dual row bearing which is stronger than the later ones.

      Thanks for contributing with the additional technical info! I tried my best not to overstate the problem but felt obliged to cover it. All cars have their foibles and often they end up being overstated on forums. Thanks, Phil

    Purchased my 2000 Boxster S in 2003. I must agree with all your observations. I did the IMS bearing shortly after purchase and has been awesome. The car is unique in its handling and performance. With 37,000 miles on the clock my garage queen will be with me until I can't handle the clutch anymore. My plan is to leave it to one of my 3 grandsons. I'm sure there will be fight over it. Oh yeah... one other issue was a leaking coolant tank in the rear boot which wound up being a minor cost.

    I recently bought a 2004 boxster S 550 spyder 6 speed anniversary model, number 779. Got it for a great price. It's mostly been sitting for the last 8 years or so. But everything still works great, and yes, it really does go 0 to 60 in just over 5 seconds, in 2nd gear! Came with a Boze 9 speaker sound system.

    I owned a 2.7 from new and after a 16 year gap have bought a 2004 986 S as the Boxster is hand on heart the best driving car I’ve ever owned. You’ve described it well. Going to the shop or the Cote dAzur - and I’ve done both it’s just perfect for the Stelvio or Sainsbury. You’ve described it well.

    Dark gray 2001 Boxster S here! Six speed manual, what a car! Don't forget proper tires, because they vastly improve cornering and curve behavior.
    Mine is fitted with the Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06, and they are phenomenal... Extremely grippy, wet or dry, and extremely comfortable. It's an all season tire, and actually does well in the snow, so don't expect it to do as well as the Continental summer tire!
    By the way, I'm about to buy a set of the Continental summer tire version because of a TH-cam review by Tyre Reviews. I get nothing for recommending it, he just does phenomenal reviews.

    Great content, I am looking to buy a Boxster and I am split between to 986S and 987S, both have there positive and negative points, the 987 models being newer are obviously more expensive, Decisions decisions.

      I have some friends that are car gurus and put your dilemma to them, they have the following comments: "Build quality, especially interior fit and finish is better with the newer ones", "Like the later one - interior nicer too", " I'm kind of liking the retro'ness of the 986 headlights these days", "the engine size increased on the later 987 from 3.2 to 3.4 with Power moving from 254 to 291.", " I love the Lobster wheels of the 987 generation" MY COMMENT: Both great cars, power I don't think is a big deal as the car is all about balance and poise, 986 may become sought after as the 1st gen of the Boxster, 987 will likely have more of the mechanical "bugs" resolved and a better screwed together does feel tempting! Hope this helps some! Glad you liked the vid and thanks for your comment 👍😎 Cheers, Phil

My new sweetheart is a 2004 Porsche Boxster S, 6 speed manual trans, 87K miles on the odometer, It's a midnight blue exterior, medium gray and black interior. I keep going outside just to look at it. :) Gave 13K USD for it. :) This is my first Porsche, but I fell in love with the 1985 Porsche 928 Si while stationed in Germany in the mid 80's.

    Bought my first 986 tiptronic base 1998 model in Hawaii 2018 for just $5K. It had 172000 miles on it with no ims history completed. In 3 1/2 yrs I put 5000 miles on it.
    I sold it in Dec ‘21 when Covid and a health issue forced me out of the islands. Now 6 months later in Idaho, I’m in a ‘02 Boxster S sporting guards red & which I paid $11k. It has 119000 miles, with ims and clutch done. Some of the things I have to do is change a wheel bearing, upgrade from the broken Porsche radio (do I go LED?) & purchase missing wind deflectors.
    There hasn’t been a huge uptick in Boxster prices in the USA but I believe one is coming.

    You should not talk BS. 2.5 engines are less (not more) likely to develop bore-scoring than the larger 3.2 in the S. For obvious reasons: same engine (!) with smaller cylinders.
    In addition, the IMS in 2.5 is dual row bearing, versus single row in most later engines. Single row has higher chance of failure.

      Congrats, they’re a wonderful car, you’ll love it! The intermediate shaft and rear main oil seals are the main things to look for but there has been some hysteria about it and so the occurrence rate has been over emphasised in my opinion. Even so, get to know your car and the symptoms for these two issues and keep an eye out. Oil leaks on a Boxster engine should always be investigated as could be a sign of these issues. Also, a rattle on start up or when going onto the throttle. Only other thing is, to use it! They are really well engineered cars but all mechanical devices work better if used regularly. Since then though, prices have checked back somewhat. I appreciate, as a long term owner, you will be more aware of the "long term" price range and that this has been pretty flat. But, good news, you aren't experiencing depreciation, which is car ownerships biggest cost AND you have got a Porsche 😎 Cheers, Phil

      If I were to become wealthy then buy more exotic drivers cars and keep for a while then sometimes you happen to hit the jackpot ( 4.0 gt3 rs ,carrera gt ,maclaren F1 etc )
      Let's all be grateful that realistically priced great cars exist for the average Joe.

      Hi, yes, you are right, there were some styling changes too that I didn't mention in the video. You make some good points about the tiptronic, I still think the manual cars be me more in demand as future classics, at least in the UK market anway. I need to find someone with a Boxster S tiptronic that I can try out to compare, shame you are based (presumably) in France? @@ReviveMyRide So yes, manual transmissions are more in demand than Tiptronics. It's different, in Tiptro it's much more difficult to stay high in the towers. If we arrive quickly behind a car that is going slower than us, the gearbox will quickly go down in the revs and go up 1 to 2 gears. On the other hand, if we drive quietly and we press the accelerator frankly, the beast is unleashed and the song of the 3.2L wakes up.I like to switch to automatic mode to warm up the engine quietly then I switch to manual and there we can make the Flat 6 sing :) On the other hand, when I drive more quietly or in a traffic jam, I switch to automatic. We can also go down a gear automatically using the buttons on the steering wheel, however after a few seconds, if our driving has calmed down, we go back to the next gear.

    You’re dreaming if you think this car is collectible. And yes, I own one. There are way too many available to be rare or collectible

      Fair comment but the key thing is that they aren’t depreciating and if anything have started creeping up in value, which is always nice as an owner! ☺️

    I have a yellow 2.5. its a great car and quite economical and feel the power is fine i liked the review but not sure where the caymen comments come from as its a review for a boxster . May as well said i prefer a fiesta . You where very polite about it

      Hi Peter, Thanks for your comment! I watched the video back and I feel I skipped past the 2.5 too quickly. As you rightly point out, it's still a reasonably light weight, open top sports car with fantastic handling and 200bhp. I certainly wouldn't be complaining if I had one on my driveway! One comment I saw on a forum from a 2.5 owner really stuck with me: "When I'm sat at home, I often think I would prefer the S but when I'm driving my 2.5 car, I never do!" Bet yours looks great in yellow! Cayman: All comments are welcome but as you say, we were talking about a Boxster and you can't drop the top on a Cayman! 😎

    Do you know what exhaust system this car has?

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, it had the standard exhaust but I may have made it sound more punchy through strategic camera and microphone placement. It wasn't my intention to exaggerate the exhaust note, I was just trying to get the best possible footage! 👍 BTW, I have since been made aware of something called a De-Snorkel, which releases more induction noise from the engine. It's got its own pros and cons but here's a vid if you're interested. th-cam.com/video/nXqg31GdM-E/w-d-xo.html Thanks, Phil

    I have a 986. IMSB is overhyped. There are more real maintenance issues to contend with.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment. Always good to hear from an owner, to reassure others! I agree with you that it’s issue has been overstated and I tried not to emphasise it too strongly in the video but it would have been remiss of me not to mention it… thanks, Phil

      @jonasbechyne8545 I know right?! Just checked again and obviously winter is a good time to buy a convertible but even so, they are still really cheap! (economic downturn at the moment too). I’ve seen a 986 S, however it only has 5 gears. Is this possible ?

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is no, they all came with 6 speeds as standard. However, I saw a mention on a forum where someone changed theirs for a 5 speed for track use (gear ratios?). Thanks, Phil

      The 2.5 and 2.7 variants have a 5 speed box as standard .... the 3.2 986 S has the 6 speed. Hope this helps

    Cayman looks much better. 718 is a much better car and no IMS, bore scoring or liner crack issues.

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment, some very valid points! Cayman is a wonderful looking car and being a tin top, is bound to have a stiffer chassis, which very keen drivers may prefer. However, on a nice day, it’s great to drop the top on a Boxster and hear the engine and see the sun! Yep, Porsche did iron out some of the issues with the 718 no doubt, but the 986 is the original Boxster, only time will tell which models become most desirable as a collector car.

      4 cylinder though 😬

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the build! Yep, you're right, when the 4 cylinder came out, there was quite a lot of grumbling from the Porsche community. The 4 cylinder cars will still sell well, they're great cars but another reason the 986 will do well as a collectors car is that flat six!
