Telling Maya to activate the sneakers comes from Greek mythology, Luke is the son of Hermes who also has sandals like that and Maya is the name of Hermes' mother, therefore Luke's grandmother

i love how medusa used her curse to protect herself from bullies but at the same time you can see the lines of good and evil were blurred because of all the innocent people on her basement, like she had a point but then entirely lose it when she punished humans and satyrs, she was good but went to far which is a very common occurrence in this series 👀

So, Medusa was in the books, but the trio didn’t recognize her for a while. The nuance of her story as a victim of the gods is in some versions of the myths, but not the ones Rick originally used for the books. I personally like that we got both versions told and don’t know who to trust. Because in some versions of the myths, her affair with Poseidon was… less than consensual. Which I think the show came as close to saying as they could for a kids show, with language like “survivor”, “the same monster”. The gods are not great people.
On a lighter note: two of the statues in Medusa’s basement are Rick Riordan and his wife Becky.
Percy’s iconic “I am impertinent” line is straight from the book and iconic as heck.
Lin-Manuel Marandas is Hermes, the messenger of the Gods, for this show. We will be seeing him featured more in episode 6 (tonight).

That’s so interesting that the trio recognized Medusa immediately in the show but not in the books. I like how they portrayed her story in this episode! OMG that’s hilarious that they made statues of Rick and Becky to be in the show!! 😂 The impertinence line is sooo iconic, I cracked up lol. I’m so excited to see more of Lin!!!! The oldest (known) version of Medusa's story where her affair with Poseidon wasn't consensual was Ovid's version. Ovid was Roman, not Greek, and he wrote his stories as fiction rather than religion. What the books did is combine her more evil Greek versions (where her relations with Poseidon at least appear to be consensual) with Ovid's version. But it looks like in the show they went more for just the Ovid side.

You mentioned the movie a lot, and I don't know if you know this or not so I'll tell you: basically, Rick Riordan accepted the offer of having the books adapted into a movie. However, the movies had *everything* pretty much wrong. The movies are *not* reliable sources from the books, and a lot of us fans pretend they don't exist simply because of how horrible they were. Rick warned them not to publish the movie, but they did it any way. The movies had a lot of backlash, and rightfully so. Rick originally said he didn't want to have a reboot of the books, but when Disney+ offered it to him, he said yes. The idea was formed some time in 2019 and announced in 2020, ten years after the first movie's release. This time, Rick is involved in the making of the series. While it doesn't fit the books perfectly, the changes are great and much needed.

That’s so interesting! I haven’t read the Percy Jackson books yet and my only knowledge of the world was when I watched the movie when I was a kid. Basically all I remember from that movie was Medusa so that’s why I brought it up while watching this episode. I do know about it being nothing like the books and the backlash it got, I just didn’t know HOW it was different from the books so I find the differences super fascinating! I LOVE that Rick is super involved in this tv show bc then you know that any changes are true to the story and world 🥰 I love this Percy Jackson tv series sooo much!! It means so much to me already so I’m so excited to read the books after season 1! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!! 🤍

  • @TBoring
    @TBoring 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

    Greek Mythology Fun facts:
-Satyrs are nature spirits, so yes Grover and other satyrs can talk to animals. Satyrs also have some nature magic which I’m sure we’ll see (when they have the budget for it).
-The winged horses are called Pegasi and are the offspring of the original Winged Horse from Greek Mythology, Pegasus. Additional fun fact in Greek Myth Poseidon is known as the Father of Horses because he created them.
-You’ll find out very quickly that the Greek gods aren’t these fair and caring protectors on high with a few bad apples. The gods are us, just as flawed and petty as any human being but with godly power. Think back to the moment you were the most petty and now imagine if you had unlimited power in that moment. Most people would abuse that power and the Greek pantheon does. It’s what makes them both terrifying and compelling.
-Medusa’s story really has no definitive version (almost no story in mythology does) these stories have been told and retold over thousands of years. In the original Greek myths Medusa was born a monster with two sisters almost as terrifying, but over time her story changed. In some versions of Medusa’s story her relationship with Poseidon was completely consensual, in others it wasn’t. Athena cursed Medusa but more modern interpretations have made it more of a gift to protect Medusa from those who would do her harm. All the versions while different are valid, because the stories are what we need them to be. The stories stoke creativity and it’s how we get something like the Percy Jackson series, and it’s ultimately a good thing.
-Also the person holding Medusa’s head in the statue is Perseus, a Greek Demigod, son of Zeus, who was sent to slay Medusa to save his mom from marrying a tyrannical King. After saving his mom (and a princess named Andromeda whom he later married) Perseus gave Medusa’s head to Athena as a tribute and to thank her for her help in his quest. She then put Medusa’s head on her shield. While it still turns monsters and mortals to stone, it won’t kill any gods, but it still scares them and causes them to flinch when they see it.
-Also Annabeth’s mistrust of Percy is partially due to an ongoing feud between Athena and Poseidon that has been going on for a few thousand years, ever since the people of Athens chose Athena as their patron god over Poseidon.

    • @ShadySpot

@@ShadySpotoh I remember. Just thought it might be better easing people into the weirdness of Greek mythology. It’s complicated explaining to people that Percy is technically half brothers with a flying horse. And that all the Pegasi are Percy’s nieces and nephews

That’s such a cool story about Perseus!!! And I had no idea Athena and Poseidon had a feud. This is all so fascinating. Thank you so much for watching and commenting this!! 😊🤍

so medusa was originally just a monster. She was born a gorgon just like her sisters. Later on people came up with the story of her being punished by athena for sleeping with poseidon inside athena’s temple, and then in recent years people have decided to consider it SA because of the power imbalance between a god and a mortal. Many people nowadays relate to the later versions of medusa’s story and so she has become a symbol for survivors of sexual assault, which I assume is why they went with the later versions of her story for this.

In the books, Medusa and posiden were in love and had sex in Athena’s temple and Athena punishes her. The kids fought her as a regular villain, without any shades of gray. This was the the most common version of the myth for a long time. Recently, the version that Medusa was SA’d became more common and championed by assault survivors. The author decided to update the show to be more in line with the current myth but still within the family friendly tv rating. I personally really like the changes!

Oh wow I didn’t know about the multiple different myths! I had only known about the SA version and that’s why I kinda liked Medusa and really felt bad for her. @@WeCouldBeHeroesDesignsthe SA version is a Roman invention. The Greeks depicted the relationship between Medusa and Poseidon as consensual/ didn't really care about that question. Then the Roman author Ovid came along. He wrote basically gritty reboots of well known myths honing in on the idea of the gods as flawed creatures. His retelling of introduced the assault.

I have some info that might be helpful! First, the gods didn't order the statues. In the basement, Medusa mentions shipping the kids' statues to Olympus as a lesson, so I think she's doing it to taunt them, not because the want them. Second, Lin Manuel-Miranda's character is Hermes! That's why he's taking the head up to Olympus, because he's the god of messengers. So no unsuspecting mortals will get hurt!

He’s an adult who never read Percy Jackson as a kid and the whole show is him going and reading them for the first time with no context and looking at them from an adult perspective (with plenty of humor). He’s done with the entire first series and is now making episodes on the show as it comes out, although those have spoilers for the rest of the series, but I would totally recommend listening to that as you read the books (if you ever want to) considering you and him were/are in the same boat!

    Here's the thing:
there are three main versions of the myth of Medusa.
1st. She was born a Gorgon, and her relations with Poseidon in Athena's temple were fully consensual. She was cursed with the stone powers thingy by Athena as punishment for having desecreted her temple, and just in general, as she was a Gorgon, she was geniually a villain. That's the greek myth.
All the myths where she's not born a Gorgon or where the relations with Poseidon weren't consensual, they are Roman.
not to spoiler too much but I like this change because it's slightly foreshadowing to seasons 6-10.

there are multiple different versions of Medusa's myth, in some versions she was born a gorgon and doesn't have anything to do with the gods and just a monster for the original Perseus to kill on his adventures. Other versions she was a maiden of Athena who was raped by Poseidon, other versions of her entered the relationship consensually. Some versions it's a punishment for breaking her oath, some versions make Athena a villain of the whole story by cursing Medusa after she was attacked, other verisons it's a gift to make sure no one would ever attack her again. there's a lot of different verisons of old stories, especially ones that are thousands of years old, the books and the series seem to be a mix of them

Love the reactions so far and welcome to the percy jackson family!!! The series has been brilliant so far (from a long time fan of the books)
    Some thoughts on this episode:
    - the amount of sass in this episode was off the charts. I love how we get to see their characters develop out in the real world and their dynamic as a trio. Their acting is amazing and it only gets better in the next episodes
-The consensus song!!! In the books grover plays the pipes so I love how they managed to keep his musical talents in the show. The song was so cute
-Leah was EVERYTHING in this episode
-Jessica Parker Kennedy was incredible as Medusa
    - I personally love the change they made to the way they met and fought Medusa. They managed to keep the tension and make it scary. It's way different to the books (I would say the movie is probably actually closer) but I love that they made her into a complex character instead of a full on villain. The whole 'you can't tell who the monster is' is such an interesting take (no spoilers but this develops even further in the next episode)
    - lin Manuel miranda as hermes is such a surprise casting but honestly I am here for it lol

For Medusa, I'm wondering if they were trying to do the "all villain's have reasons" trope backwards. Usually, you met the villain first and you get the sad backstory later, this way you can feel sad for them and see as less horrible. But then they do the opposite, shows the backstory and tricks you to think that she may not be that bad, only to show you all the innocent people turned to stone and how crazy her reasoning is. And this made her most terrifying, cause you want to trust her but then you see how much you can't.

Another great reaction, Sarah! As always, I love the good vibes :). Between your reaction, episode 6 coming out tonight, and my second straight day off of work due to the snow/cold, this may be the best Tuesday ever.
I’ve followed you on Instagram, and I’ve seen a lot of snow where you’re at too (also, your dog is adorable!!!), so I’m curious: where do you live? I’m in Michigan.
6:35- Although you are right that reviving Thalia as a human is a better idea than turning her into a tree, it is one of the "better" things the gods have done, at least in the books. Remember how in the first episode, Grover said that Sally wouldn't be able to make it into camp? That's because Thalia's Tree acts as a barrier, protecting the camp from monsters and not allowing any monsters or mortals into it. He didn't want any other Demis to die like his daughter did, so when she died, he made her a protective barrier to ensure that no one would...unless they left camp, that is. So, yes, it stinks that he didn't revive her *and* plant the tree barrier, but it is a nice gesture all the same.
6:58- Two things. A: I also would be thinking that...and, unfortunately, probably say it aloud too, so I'm with ya Percy. B: I don't think that Percy meant it to be mean towards Annabeth and Thalia. I've been others online say that he meant that more as a jab at the gods, and, especially given the events of the end of the episode, that seems very logical. He still doesn't like his dad, or any of the gods for that matter, so he said it to get at them, not Annabeth. Still not the best timing, but at least it doesn't seem like he meant for it to hurt their feelings.
10:26- To say that Annabeth and Athena have *beef* is a bit strong. They actually have one of the better god/child relationships from what I remember. They'll go into this more in the next episode, but Annabeth doesn't really believe in "asking the gods for help." She thinks that if you *earn* their help, they'll give it to you, but you have to deserve it. She believes that the Celestials have to do everything right, and then the gods will help. Make a misstep and they're SOL. This will carry into the next episode and Medusa's head/LMM play a part in it. (Also, since you seemed a little confused by LMMs little cameo, he is in fact a god. He's Hermes, the messenger god/Luke's dad. Ep. 6 tonight will be especially fun because he is coming back for the Casino stuff!)
12:34- Good catch on the statue!
15:15- I didn't even catch that line, but that is SO good, and you are definitely right in your reading of it. I won't spoil, but Episode 4 is not a good one for Annabeth. She doesn't act as mean, but it's still not a good episode for her. I kind of talk a little bit more about this in my 10:26 timestamp, too, but you are right to be weary.
15:58- So, Medusa worshipped Athena, but then Poseidon started to notice her and took advantage of her in ways that some scholars have said was of a...non-consensual sexual nature. Then, Athena cursed Medusa so that everyone who looked at her would turn to stone and all that. If anyone else knows more and has even read this far, feel free to fill in gaps/correct where necessary, but that's what I know.
17:51- Somewhere in that basement there's a statuefied version of Rick Riordan!
21:40- Episode 5 is also very good at showing the connection that Annabeth and Percy have...even before they start getting involved romantically, so I'm super stoked to watch you react to that one!

Oh wow I didn’t know Thalia as a tree acted as the barrier! That’s so interesting. So before her, monsters could come into the camp easier? That’s crazy.
Oh I totally get that Percy meant it as a jab to the gods. He’d never purposely offend Annabeth like that but I think she took it personal. But I’m with Percy, I don’t like the gods.
I’m so worried for Annabeth when it comes to the foreshadowing Athena will turn on her! I don’t like Athena bc of what she did to Medusa.

The Medusa myth you're talking about is roman, not greek. In the original version she is born a monster, snake hair, tusks and all. she even has sisters! They are known as the Gorgons. The Roman version (that she was a beautiful mortal woman who got turned into a monster by Athena) got popularized as a feminist story much much later. Both in the books and the show they try and play both versions: she got turned, and that's awful, but then she used her powers to terrorize people and that's also not good. The only confusing part is that in the Riordanverse she also has Gorgon sisters, so I don't know what's up with that unless they're implied that Athena turned her whole family

In defense of Thalia becoming a tree (not in defense of Zeus turning her into a tree cuz Zeus sucks, just the fact that she turned into one) shapeshifting was a common thing in Greek myths. Whether it be Zeus into a swan cuz it would be easier to have sex with Leto that way (so many questions but whatever. Also, that myth falls into the same category of Medusa of different versions have it be consensual or rape) or Daphne into a tree (by asking her father to help her, not in the way she's a dryad/tree spirit) to escape Apollo from having sex with her. Nature was a much more present theme and a lot more interwoven in myths and people's lives, so Thalia becoming a pine tree is just par for the course.

In th books th relationship btw medusa n poseidon was consensual, w/ her feeling honored to have attracted th attentions of a man like him. Even if not explicitly said, th same thing is also strongly implied in th show, in fact medusa says that she's not angry w/ th god for having raped her or smth, but she's angry w/ him for not having done anything to save her frm athena's wrath even tho he had told her to love her. My biggest complaint is how they made Annabeth so ignorant of a lot of Greek Mythology and Percy almost all-knowing. It was the exact opposite in the books. Annabeth knows the truth about Medusa, she's knows that what Poseidon and Athena did to her was incredibly cruel. But at the end of the day Medusa was turned into an immortal monster that is completely fine with murder. Medusa was (thousands of years ago) a victim turned into a monster.

this episode don’t have MUCH of the book, it’s my least favorite episode, in the book they take toooo long to know that Aunt Em is Medusa and in the bus catches fire and kill the fury’s before they even get to medusa
