    Another great HONEST review from you Todd. I hate when youtubers talk about only the positive parts of the freebies they received. And most of them also try to sell you their affiliate link. You are always honets. If and If only you really need nd filters you should consider these but if anyone is that much concerned about motion blur and shutter speed..They shouldn't buy that mini gimbal at all. The main point here is to use it hassle free.. For YT work no one really needs nd filters.(see Markus Pix, Casey Neitstat etc.) For pro work you must buy pro cameras.. That's it :)

    Great video! From what I've seen so far in my opinion on the mist filters is that the Freewell Snow Mist seems to look better at night than the DJI Black Mist, and vice versa in day light. Good price for such a large set. You're right that it may be overkill for most, but for those who have a little extra cash to throw around, it's probably a good investment because of the whole "better to have and not need than not have if you ever need" theory.

    • @dominey
      @dominey  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep. The price is certainly reasonable for what you get. I'd be interested in trying DJI's black mist filter to see how it compares to Freewell's Snow Mist.

    Think of a mist filter as a night or lowlight filter. I used one on my big Sony for Christmas lights to bloom. They look great for city streetlights. The NDs are for daylight - choose based upon the clouds present that day. The polarizer will make the blue sky and water/sea/lake pop. If you plan the shooting situation, they can make a decent photo or video really great.

    Great video! I frequently use ND filters with my full-frame camera. However, I've encountered issues where even the smallest dust particle on the filter can ruin a shot, despite thorough cleaning. These particles are hard to detect during installation, especially in fast-paced, 'run and gun' situations where there's little time for meticulous cleaning. My solution is to aim the camera at the sky or another solid-colored surface and inspect the viewfinder closely. The viewfinder is crucial because it provides a more accurate preview than the camera's screen, allowing me to detect any dust particles on the filter or lens. However, with cameras like the Pocket 3 that lack a viewfinder, I might have to reconsider using ND filters as frequently, particularly if dust becomes a persistent problem.

    • @dominey
      @dominey  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True. Smears and grit can be a real pain with small cameras like the Pocket 3, and action cameras well. I once shot a video on my GoPro that looked like I was using an anamorphic filter because the light streaks were so insane.

      24fps is what our eyes can see and it looks natural, also this is the frame rate all movies use it. 60fps is used only if you want to do slow motion. You can shoot with any frame you want, but there is a rule in a cinematography that sets 24 frames for cinema (movies) and 30 frames for television (journalism, tv shows and etc)… not a rule but an standards.

    • @dominey

      If I had to pick two, I'd say ND8 and ND32 (or ND64) would be the most useful. ND8 is 3 stops, which would be good for overcast days. ND32 and ND64 are 5 and 6 stops respectively, and will block more light when the sun is bright without clouds. Then you can raise/lower ISO (or set it to a range, as shown in the video) and let the camera set an appropriate ISO. Those two NDs should do it.

However surely there's a case for setting this little pocket cam to auto exposure, then attaching say a 32 ND filter to it for shooting in full sun. The camera will then have assistance in reducing light, so will not need to crank the shutter speed hight...NO??? or am I not getting something here??

    • @dominey
      @dominey  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was going to mention variable NDs, but didn't include them in the video. My quick take is that variable NDs - while convenient - can misbehave like a CPL or ND/PL filter does when used outdoors in bright light. Also, I find them quite fiddly, especially on a small gimbal. Granted, it takes a little more time to mount/un-mount solid NDs and ND/PLs compared to rotating a dial (like a VND), but because they're magnetized the difference is fairly negligible.

      I think you're saying motion blur is less important than story? If so, I'd agree. Motion blur is sweetening of the image and can't make a story more compelling. For me it's more about making things less noticeable, and because all of us are accustomed to watching television and films at 24fps and 1/50 second, matching that means the footage is less distracting.

    I stopped using ND filter in my drones a long time ago, makes almost no difference on footage and really slow you down. I will also not using it in my pocket 3 I’ll leave the ND filters only for my main camera. Drone and gimbals (pocket 3) are gadgets to to give a plus into your videos, if you make them more difficult to use, you will be more lazy to use it and you will use it less. If you making a video for a client that doesn’t know anything about cinematography he will never notice the difference about montion blur, this is for our ego e preference.

      Depending on where you’re shooting, it’s not just about motion blur but also getting the shot exposed properly. I took the pocket 3 to Jamaica when it was first released and I wish I had nd filters. The highlights like the clouds were blown out. I shot in log and was able to do some grading but then you are pushing the colors in your footage unnecessarily where having an nd filter could easily address this problem. I will say that the auto setting are great but you can really get some amazing footage when properly exposed and shooting in log.

      @@IndiaDelgado about the expose I can easily fix reducing the expose to -0.3 to -1.0. But I agree with you about ND filters for expose properly, but for me the difference is not so significant for the extra work to get the footage. Maybe I’m thinking like this because I’m a lazy videomaker haha.

    You don’t really need filters they don’t do very much really

      True if you don't really care about smoother shutter speeds and increasing clarity. If the Pocket 3 had a variable aperture it would be an entirely different ball game.

    No. No you do not need these filters. Shoot in log & clean it up in post

      That would not do anything for motion blur.

    *@**10:46** Uhhh no. The mist effect filter doesn't look good because you're shooting into the Sun just outside of the upper Left top of your frame. Don't do that ! For one thing, this kind of shot is incredibly cliche ! For another reason, this effect filter is designed for indoor incandescently lit, studio shots, or outdoor with the Sun behind you over your shoulder to the Left or Right. Never use any effects filter with the main point of light only in front of you. I'm sorry to say this, but I feel compelled to say it - I am so sick of this goddam influencer movement ! This is one messed up trend which really needs to just go away ! Why ? There's too many people giving out either incorrect or deliberately obfuscating information, or the influencer is just a rank amateur, who simply doesn't know what they are talking about, or hasn't received enough basic videography or photography training to properly evaluate the product in question. I wish the companies who approach various people with channels on TH-cam practised some kind of proviso that in order to review their products the influencer had to demonstrate some level of proof of photography knowledge, or training, or qualifications first.*

      It’s meant for professionals that want to use pocket 3 as a hobby but still film d log to customize how footage look post. Not for newbies that use it for vlogging
