In today's Vidja Currin1776 is gonna move some water. If you ever run into a need to move or redirect a lot of water this technique could help you out.
The first job I had out of high school, before getting drafted, was working for a landscaper. One of the properties we maintained had a pool that the owner wanted drained. My boss was going to rent a pump and huge hoses. I told him I could save him a bunch of money and he wouldn't have to monitor the whole situation. The house was on a hill. With two garden hoses syphoning, I drained that pool overnight. My boss was amazed and heaped praise on me. I told him, "Don't compliment me, compensate me." That didn't happen.
Some suggestions: If you drop the output into a (grate) bucket of water, air will not enter from the output. You may as an alternativ add a bend at the output so the flow goes upwards. If you add an output bucket and place that with the rim exactly at the level you want the pond to be, then you have an autosrestarting siphon. Never runs dry, starts by itself in the next rain shower. In dry periods the bucket may dry out tough.
Super glad you saved your damn. Best battlbox video I've seen in a long time. Instructional and to the point. Gotta love PVC. Glad you dont have to rebuild the dam.
Rick Britton, Brother, I love your videos , and products you use in your Battle box, if that was my beautiful pond, I might use 10 inch pipe , I pray that the rain will slow down
Battlbox :) .... Mate it just goes to show that you learn something new every day .... great video and full of information and I hit all the bells and buttons looking forward to the lastest learning sessions cheers Brenden your new Aussie fan
I am glad that it worked for you..we are not having rain this year in Northern California it summer like already here...sunny skies with temps in the 70's
Thanks for a great and clear vid. I have watched a lot of construction folks say "our siphon dropped the water blah blah", but never show how they start it. This really helped. Thanks again.
@@TheBrushcutter I have been watching him for years. In fact, he is the one that got me curious how they do it. I have just never seen him actually do it.
@@carabs3823 we used to use these when possible for draining pools and puddles and the like on construction jobs. I've seen him start them several times. The amazing thing is just how small of an air leak can cause them to not work.
Thank you! My pond is “silted in” and would cost $15-20k to cut the damn and drain and clean out. We have dry summers so now next summer I can siphon it out and do it myself with my tractor.
Thanks for sharing your technique Battlbox. My pond is overgrown with water lilies, iris and other pond plants.which are beginning to "bunch up"; its a large and fairly deep pond, it needs to be drained completely before I can get in there to thin the growth. Just wondering if it's possible to drain the pond completely, i.e. right to the bottom, using your method?
Pro Tip for the PVC Glue, you should put the purple stuff on first then IMMEDIATELY apply the blue stuff while they are both sopping wet. Its a chemical bond and you are not making as strong a connection when you let the purple stuff dry first. Learnt that bit of genius from a Master Plumber
That was fantastic! Reminded me of draining our water beds with a hose out the second story bedroom window. I had no idea about using the T cap. and end cap to creat the flow. Thanks for sharing.
I thought you did an excellent job!!! I wanted to mention a few things that may make it easier for you and improve flow. I am currently studying for an exam that involves water flow in pipes. First, if you made the intake more of a funnel shape (maybe by using a coupler to go up a size) this will reduce the water turbulence at the pipe intake and will increase flow. Second, you could eliminate the one way valve on the intake and instead use a shop vac (possibly two in series) to create a vacuum in the pipe which will suck the water up from the pond and fill the whole siphon (you will need to connect the shop vac where you were using a bucket to fill with water). Keep up the great work!
I bought 2/3rds of the pipe needed to do this on mine a couple years ago and just got around to draining the pond. Had to get one more 20ft section and it was more for that one section than it was for the two 20ft sections and all of the elbows and end cap 2 years ago.
Im a amputee and military vet and well ... You sir just gave the solution so i salute ya and crack a cold budweiser .... now that the pump solution to my large scale mmj aquaplonics system is figured out ill be set up.... im trying to make my meds 100% free as its a cost that is unbelievably high no pun intended. I think the sump tank on a small stand with a mesh covered bottom drain with a gravityfeed to the fish pond then a 8 inch maybe 10 inch siphon from the pond into filter and split it to the ladies hanging in vertical above for a drink return catch trough for the now nitrate free water takes it back to the sump tank thus it continues....fried fish and fried me ... so to that one sir i salute XD
If you build one of these and cant get it working, the problem is likely that you can't fully fill it. Water runs from the filling tee at the top back into the pond, filling the pipe with air. Put a foot valve or check valve on the pond end to keep water from going back into the pond while filling. The valve will automatically open when flow starts. Also, the whirlpool sucking air into the pipe can get too big and allow the pipe to fill with air. (been there, done that)
Great vid man. That erosion on that damn was pretty bad. I would look into some gabion structures to help prevent that from happening. You may be able to use it for other applications as well. Best of luck man.
Letsdig18 does this all the time. He uses the rubber sleeve connectors to easily store. No glue at all. Also, people are making electricity with syphons. You could have one installed to drain the pond and make power!
Thinking about trying this with corrugated pipe by putting a wieght on the pond end. Then submerge the pipe in pond to fill it. Seal the outlet end somehow, Then swiftly pulling the outlet end to the low side/drainage area. Quickly pull off the sealing mechanism. I'm thinking this will work, providing there are no air leaks in piping. Thought? Great vid btw!!
Problem 3 is that the pressure of the pond will not hold back a dam thing. If you had 2 valves, one at the surface of the pond and one at the end of the siphon this would work 1st time every time.
Is the area the water is going over on your dam not a vegetated emergency spillway? You may want to raise that dam up and add some riprap on the spillway to avoid further erosion. Or you could upsize your outfall pipe so the water elevation doesn't reach your spillway anymore. I would stabilize the outfall channel before I do with some gabion or riprap while I'm at it. that's some decent flow going out that outfall pipe. Great video! Your hilarious to 😂
Wow it’s been a year, I hope the job went well. I am thinking all those trees on your dam should be removed, when they die,and someday they will, the roots will rot leaving a path for water to go through the dam. I just think you should never have trees growing on a pond dam.
You need to put a check valve on the intake side so the pipe is completely full when you put the top cap on. You can use pvc valves at the fill point and discharge. When the pipe is completely full close the fill valve. Now go open the discharge valve. The discharge must always be lower than the intake

Double niceeeeee
Triple Nice!!!
Dude, you really taught me something! I love DIY projects! Thanks for putting an update in the same video!

Nice. This will help me with my pond overflowing. Thanks!
I love it. It worked just like you said. Genius in a primitive way. Good video.

That was great! Thanks for sharing.
I used your video as the blueprint for my siphon, and it worked out, so far.
You did a good job and showed us a great way to deal with that issue. May I suggest you build an emergency overflow that’ll work easy .

You must not have ever watched many of Letsdig18's vidjas.

nice video and thx for not over describing which makes a simple process seem complicated.
Its Great when a plan comes together..........Well Done.
Check valve at intake will never loose suction
That was awesome! Thank you very much.
All good! 👍
👍enjoyed watching this. Learned something I can put to use. We getting a lot of rain in Alabama too. I just hit a catfish in my jeep!

Hey , thanks a lot. That's very useful piece of info. Good job !
Will somebody please think of the turtles!!! Great video, brother.
Sheer genius. Well done.
Thank You I'm going to dredge our 1 acre pond. I'll wait till mid summer to get it dried up.
That is genius. My uncle lost a pond because of the same problem. If we only knew.
Well done son .Thanks , great video.

Awesome! You need another 10ft pipe on the output side to keep the running water from eroding the backside of the dam. Good job.

nice work buddy, thanks for the help with my similar problem.

Thank you for this great video! Watching in March, 2021 =)
I really Liked this Video!!!
Thanks man!! 👋
Feb 2020. Back when you could just buy 60 feet of 4 inch PVC without having to refinance your house!!!
Life coming at ya ain't always funny, brother. This is the kind of thing that separates the men from the clowns!

I've seen someone put a tennis ball into the whirlpool to stop air getting into the pipe.

I feel your excitement.

Getter Done lol! I hope it works brother!
great job .never seen that before
Nicely done 😉
Nice job sir.
It worked!!! Thanks
Brother, I live in Central California. Wish you could send some of your rain our way!
Thanks!
Only those that have experienced fire ants know the pain this things give.

Hello from Michigan pathways

a 4' line can move 260 gallons per min

Nice country living video. What is your pond used for?
Catch'n monster Bass
Thank you sir
Nice . Which place/City/country?
Might be time for some boulders on the backside of the dam...

Does it matter if the pvc is for non pressure, like sewer pipe?
Hay Currin did here the one I was DOD contractor and hunted in Ukraine it was in the DNC debate last night
Dam this was a cool vid
So this summer when water goes down put in a proper drain
You could probably turn a large water turbine with a few of these going!!
finagling YEE HAW
I have a distance of 300’. Will this work with flexible fire hose?
Interesting.
You might try pond liner on your spillway
Idk...but you could have used a single big flexible pipe with no extra pvc thing, it would have worked the same ...
Btw we learnt alot ....thanks man
Fire ants freaking turds lmfao
If you did that in Pennsylvania DCNR would have an aneurism
Really good video and helpful! That's amazing how that worked! But where is all that water going now?
Not his problem
$250 in and I still can’t get this shit to work!
You need to put a check valve on the intake side so the pipe is completely full when you put the top cap on.
You can use pvc valves at the fill point and discharge.
When the pipe is completely full close the fill valve.
Now go open the discharge valve.
The discharge must always be lower than the intake
Cool :)
Would a fire hose work for this or would it just collapse itself?
Napalm the entire eara
put a cap on that and then drill 1 inch holes all over that screaned part before you put the screan on it problems sovled yeh boy
Where is the water running off to?
I wish I could do this but I’m not able to get the outlet below the intake :(
Check valve needed
Next project, rig it to make electricity :)
that pipe will sink anyway ! put a float on the end of it. pipe staying a 1'+ below the water level. rise and lower with the water level.
good job.too bad they did not care much.
VIH-dee-oh, not vid-yo. And put something above your inflow pipe so that it doesn't form a whirlpool. If it sucks too much air - no more siphon.
