If you go to Rio, as a local, I recommend staying in Ipanema or Leblon because the beaches there are way better than Copacabana. But keep in mind that these beaches are usually where we like to meet friends, play sprts and hang out, not to relax.
If you want relaxation go to beaches like Barra da Tijuca, Joatinga, Recreio and further West. Hope you enjoy my country!

I'm from Rio and I never usually hang out in Copacabana beach because it's more of a touristy place. My friends and I usually hang out in Ipanema or Leblon when we want to hang out in the city but when we want calm and relaxation we usually go to the beaches in the West of Rio like Barra da Tijuca and Recreio.
