  • Note: These towers were built by the British, not the French. Sorry!

Sir Charles Ross was really a jerk sometimes. Not the sort of guy you would want to go into business with.

The good old days. Just step out the factory door and start shooting up a historic structure.

I dunno why I just got this imagine of his office with an open window and anytime he'd get bad news a shot would head towards the tower.

Just as well he never got round to developing an artillery piece.

Sir Charles Ross just sounds more and more like Saxton Hale the more I learn about him.

His last recorded words were to his nurse as he lay on his death bed in Florida in 1942: 'Get the hell out!' Yes, he was indeed a charmer to the end.

Built in their hundreds by the British after two British warships mounting over 100 guns failed to take the Genoese fort at Mortello in Corsica in 1794. This impressed the British mightily but they couldn't spell properly. 😁

I thought he would build a water tower that was around the Martello tower but never touched it. An adult way of saying, "I'm not touching you."

These were built to repel an American invasion.

There are Martello towers all around Ireland. Built by the British when they feared an invasion by Napoleon.

Hi I thought Martello towers were built by the British during the Napoleonic wars. This is because there are still a number of them along the Kent coast near Hyde and Lydd in England. I think this area is known as the Romney marshes. Some of these have since been converted in to houses.

Reminds me of home-Kent, England. LOADS of these scattered around the coastline there.

It was in fact the British who built the Martello towers as coastal defense against Napoleon's invasion threats. They were first built on the south coast of England, but were later erected all over the British Isles and in Canada as an effective means of protection. They had walls several metres thick, had a ground floor acting as a magazine, an upper floor acting as housing quarters for the small garrison and on top they usually had one or more 24-36 pounder guns able to rotate 360 degrees.
