I love how Great Big Story treats all stories with respect. When I was growing up as a Japanese American kid, I used to avoid TV/movies about Japan and other Asian countries because almost all of them were about ridiculing the cultures and treating them like freak shows. So it’s so nice to see videos like this one which just tells stories like they actually are with dignity and respect. I also love how they just leave the voices of those who are interviewed in the videos speaking their native language without dubbing them over with English. Thank you, Great Big Story, please keep up the awesome work. I really appreciate your wonderful videos!

"What an idiot. Plants don't have any ears, they can't hear music!" ...which isn't likely the case here. Everyone knows that plants doesn't have ears, and I'm sure this man too. Regardless of whether music helps or not, it clearly shows how much he cares and loves those plants. What a hardworker!
I do recall the _MythBusters_ testing the effects of sound on plants, and finding that (certain) kinds of music and ways of speaking to the plants had positive effects, so yeah, this guy playing music for them makes sense to me
That’s so lovely ☺️ I do sometimes feel sad that we don’t ascribe to plants the same value of life as other living things - they may not make sounds or move noticeably but they are the foundations of almost every food chain, predecessors of most life forms and essential to ecosystems. When we eat them, we should still recognise that we draw life from taking theirs, even if it is a different kind to our own. Plants are great 😄🌱
It is a well known fact that music influences plants, not only that but it also changes the structure of water, crystals in it to be more precise. Classic music has the best effect :)
I remember watching a myth busters episode about plants having feelings. They attached a monitoring system to it and played music, slapped it, and it responded. Anyway here's the article about plants responding to music dengarden.com/gardening/the-effect-of-music-on-plant-growth
I heard about plants that do get affected by music while they are still growing.. in the ground. But hey, props to him for caring so much about his potatoes!
I’m not quite sure what’s the effect when playing music for potatoes which were harvested and already in a warehouse. But for people who don’t know there’s actually a study about how music affect the growth of plants just like sunlight does. My team when I was a 6th grader actually conducted an experiment for our research based on that study and passed the results for a local Science Investigatory Project (SIP) Contest. It was already 8 years ago but I still remember the general results which turned out that different kinds of music (jazz or rock etc.) actually made the final growth of the plants (which in our experiment were bean sprouts) a bit different from each other. Set A being grown with classical music, while Set B with jazz music and Set C with rock music. So this farmer actually has a point, just like other living organisms music also affect plants.
He just wanted to listen to some music while he is working but people thought that the music was the reason why his stuff was good. So he basically was like, Yeah definitely.
Konnyaku is also used as desert jelly, since they’re tasteless and can be flavored however you like. Added bonus is that unlike gelatin, konnyaku is pretty filling despite having zero calorie. So they make great vegan snack jelly!
3 years of planting, harvesting, planting, harvesting, planting, harvesting the SAME ROOTCROPS before they can be processed takes a lot of patience. Japanese farmers are tenacious.
Funny. I thought vegans were more about “minimal impact” living. This is as opposed to “no impact “ living which to me reads as an impossible goal. Industrial animal husbandry is taxing on natural ecosystems and human bodies for that matter. I also doubt vegans are asking everyone to be vegan or vegetarian because it would be silly to ask, say, Arctic and Antarctic diets to be vegetarian. But most people in the temperate and tropical climes easily and pleasurably pull it off.
Plants are definitely alive. Vegans know plants are alive. However, they know the difference between a potato and a dog. You can boil a potato but you shouldn't boil a dog. It's that simple.
Animism is a really wonderful concept; every blade of grass, pebble, insect and animal has a soul, and as such deserves the respect due to it. Also, a word of warning; konjac is very difficult to digest as it's largely composed of dietary fibre, so don't eat too much at once or you could risk intestinal blockage.
i love konnyaku so i'm happy they released this video. konnyaku itself tastes like nothing but it soaks up a lot of the flavor in pot roasts and it tastes great!! sometimes at festivals here there are vendors that sell konnyaku balls cooked in broth that you dip in mustard which tastes great as well. it has no calories but lots of fiber so it's great as diet food or as an ingredient in low calorie desserts.
Konnyaku jelly is popular in Korea too except it’s called acorn jelly over there, they have a more smooth & sheer finish though. But definitely delicious as a side dish with particularly thinly sliced hot chili, sugar + soy sauce, green onions. Or even in cooked dishes. Similar to tofu. Tasteless sometimes but enhances a dish.
i love konyakku, especially as grape jelly and in noodle form for soup. i first tried it when i lived in japan a few years ago and cannot live without it lol
