Mispronounces names consistently, sexist, racist, and according to statistical research, he is wrong over 60% of the time in his analysis. Need more be said? I appreciate this video, and your channel so much. Jomboy Media understands the game, and can be very funny at times but the breakdowns rarely account for what has previously happened in a game (especially this one). I watched this game and thought the rookie umpire did very well you could hear the Cubs manager bitching before they even decided to show him on camera. You deserve more credit it’s the only baseball channel I’ve come across that has credible resources and is completely unbiased. Well done!!

This ump was all over the place. 62 called strikes in the game. I like Wainwright and Davies, but their stuff isn’t that deceptive to fool batters that many times. Willson and Yadi knew they could go way outside and get strikes.

Yeah I didnt like that, I thought that was really nitpicky and also putting words in Arods mouth (not a fan of arod tho btw). Arod never said 5'7" was too short to be an umpire. He said, speaking generally, it's not the profile of a major league umpire, and that its tougher to see over catchers, especially over taller catchers. What's next amusement parks are discriminating because rollercoasters have height requirements?
Another horseshit from the announcers. I'm 173 cm which is about 5'7" I guess. Yes, sometimes a really big catcher can obstruct your view, but you still can adjust, just by standing a but higher or moving a bit sideways. Sometimes I tell a catcher hey man, you're blocking my view. I can't call it if I don't see it. And most of them will adjust, especially the expirienced ones. They know that the ump should have a good view of zone, they are not stupid.

I work with alot of inexperienced umpires who have had shit training. Gil is spot on about there being a learning curve for young/new umpires. In fact, when a partner is struggling, and a coach tries to turn me against my partner on obvious missed calls, I simply say, "There is a learning curve for all of us coach. He's new. He'll get better." Seems to work in most situations.

getting pitches 3 inches outside called strikes definitely helps. This whole game was bad on both sides. No wonder it was 0-0 at the end of 9 with the strike zone this guy had.
In college we never ask for Umps to have a perfect strike zone. We only ask them to be consistent.
Thats the more annoying thing is when one pitcher gets a call that may be a little off the plate but the other pitcher doesn't
So if I’m your college ump, and I miss a pitch at the bottom in the first inning, do you want me to miss it on purpose in the name of consistency for the rest of the game or try and get it right?
That's why if you were to put together best umpiring crew at the D-1 level and assign them on a game between two bottom MLB teams, the crew would still screw up the game. Conversely, were you to grab any four umpires at the MLB level and assign them to the two top college teams in the country, there would be no problems. The same holds true for basketball--perhaps more so. "Consistent" is a subjective, vague standard. Amateur officials are obsessed with optics (what they think others see). They fear the coach may not like them. Professionals place a premium on rules, mechanics, and systems. They are self-disciplined, focused, and hold themselves to the highest standards because they want to serve the game. Granted, there are many examples of amateur umpires exhibiting these qualities, but they are the exception to the rule.

@@josephgravina9834 Which D-1 officials or which pro officials? I have spoken with quite a few of the latter (over 25), all of whom worked amateur games at one time in their life. To be clear, there are many examples of amateur officials showing courage and acting on behalf of the sport they represent. However, that is the exception to the rule. College is about the coaches. Pro is about the athletes and the sport. Harry Wendlestedt made this clear on the first day of Umpire School. Ed Rush made this clear at Coast-to-Coast Camp. Compare the number of ejections between pro and college. Compare the number of technical fouls. College coaches exert a great deal of influence on who works their games. Are there some officials who disregard that reality and do what is right for the game? Undoubtedly. Alas, the college system does not reward that.
I’ve seen worse calls that’s for sure. He’s just got to get more consistency. As for his height....no catcher is going to block his view. He should see it even better.
What I see here is a rookie umpire with command of the upper part of the zone and off the plate but consistent on the outer edge. I think you only showed one low pitch. The number one thing players want is consistency. He's too off the plate to survive if he does not tighten up the outer half. As far as A-rod goes, the roids ate part of his brain stem. One thing most umpires can say is that they played the game at some level in their lives and have that perspective. I can't think of a single player who was an umpire before being player. He has absolutely no clue about what it takes to become a professional umpire at any level.
@Chris Smith What I am getting at is this: Professional ball players spent their lives becoming professional ballplayers. They may have umpired some youth games to get some money during the summer time. Games in which they used equipment belonging to the local league. MLB umpires worked to become professional umpires after playing ball whether it was only playing through HS ball or even college ball. I played HS ball and knew I did not have the talent to go any further. I worked just as hard as A-rod when I played HS ball. He had the talent, I didn't. But I still knew and understood the game
I got started umpiring in my early 30's. Too late to even be considered to become a professional. Still, I was pretty damn good at it. Who knows what would have happened if I had started straight out of HS. I worked just as hard to become proficient as an umpire than those guys in the Majors. My peers would say I was pretty successful.
My point is that I am pretty sure MLB umpires have a unique outlook on the game. They've played it at some level, probably only thru HS, but they understand the player's view. The vast majority of players have never umpired with any serious intent. Like I said, it was probably for walking around money in the summertime.

During some of the past few games the Cubs broadcasters have been talking about a guideline. The guidelines states that you have to have a mask on when you're on the field or something and if you don't have a mask on when you're arguing with an umpire that's an even bigger penalty. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

@@HipsterDoofus100 one of the regulations is that if you don't have your mask on your fined and the money is actually donated to charity. I had thought that Ross was arguing without a mask and that was what originally caused the incident.

Often seems like the managers are too eager to get thrown out. Later the Cubs almost made a big defensive mistake with nobody covering third on a bunt attempt with a runner on 2B. David Bote was looking somewhat angrily at the dugout as though he knew the signs or play was wrong, and I immediately wondered if that had anything to do with Ross' absence.

Who cares about the average height of an american Male? He never said it was too short to be an umpire he said generally they are taller people and it can make it harder for shorter ones to see over catchers, especially taller catchers. While I agree it doesnt matter how tall you are as long as you are good at your job, and obviously you are if you are deemed good enough for a major league umpire, but it also is entirely true that it can make it harder to see over a catcher, especially a taller one. Also not a fan of Arod in anyway but theres so many reasons not to like him, and this just ain't one

I really don’t like commentators ragging on a rookie umpire. Those calls weren’t even egregious. You would never hear them bag on a rookie player like that.

ARod's commentary was worse than Errich Bacchus's strike zone! At least Bacchus seemed like he was willing to eat the words Ross had to say so to speak and actually had a really good upper strike zone. Criticizing the high pitches when they were correctly called and then making rude comments about Bacchus' height? I just hate ARod even more now if that's even possible...
Phil Cuzzi nearly cost us the game with that horrendous call in the seventh at third base.

I thought I was obviously referring to the play at third base from yesterday and not the fair/foul roller down the line from 2-3 nights ago but apparently I didn’t make it clear enough, I’m fine. Anyway from a couple nights ago it’s hard to tell if the ball is fair or foul on replay with pitcher in the way, but on such a slow roller Phil very likely got it right.
@Black Bear I’m a soccer referee and the rule for the ball going out of play over the white line is similar to baseball.
I’m known locally for not tolerating argument on a soccer field and using the formal penalties in my sport to stop it. I had a player ask me if I was out of my mind once and I did not show a yellow card. I just shrugged and said “must be, I agreed to babysit you and your buddies for 90 minutes.” I penalize disrespect, I’ve never found that disrespectful.

The reality is that these are all borderline calls. Having all these fancy graphics on the screen let fans at home nitpick on if a pitch is an inch outside, but the reality is if its very close to the strike zone, you cant expect it to not get called.
Some of those were way off. Unhittable at that level.

This umpire is scared of pitchers that have been in the league. I just watched him umpire the red Sox/Yankees game and he gave every pitch (outside and low) to Cole while squeezing the red Sox pitcher that is in his first year. Cole doesn't need any help and just because he is garret Cole doesn't mean he doesn't throw balls. It's either he is scared of pitchers or he can't see shit cause he is so short either way he should not be behind home plate
I would love to see those commentators umpire behind the plate a couple of games then they come back and criticize the way the way they do. I see a couple of mis calls, not big deal who doesn’t make a mistake here and there. Good umpiring for the young rookie.

4:09 - this a bunch of BS from these announcers.... umpires squat, catchers squat. Height of the umpire has zero to do with it. Because umpires are taught, squat so that your chin is at the top of the catcher's helmet. If you are short, you do not have to squat as much. If you are taller, you have to squat more. So height has NOTHING to do with it. I am 5'8" and called ball for years with no issues.

2 things: A Rod is trash. His over analyzation has always been obnoxious and extreme.
However, Discriminatory?? Talk about advantages of physical stature a persons gender. Mentioning that a shorter person is at a disadvantage to see over the catcher is about as discriminatory as saying someone who can’t jump high will be at disadvantage to plan basketball. 90% of the foundation of what makes people good athletes is their physical make up, not their gender. Great channel love your videos but making that a point was off base. Don’t promote unfounded discrimination. It dilutes and hides the harm and real discrimination that exists.
Side note: those are great points about the rookie getting better. I think David Ross did his job in putting that in his head and “pointing him in the right direction” for lack of better term.

I like it. An umpire while not making a spectacle out of himself because nobody is there to watch them, however, should be demonstrative when calling strikes. It shows confidence in your decisions. I miss the classic umpires like Dutch Rennert and Ed Montague and Bruce Froemming. All of them were very demonstrative (and unique especially Rennert) in calling strikes behind the plate...

An unfortunate thing about announcers today is that you can tell who they are calling the game for by the way they call things. What they would call the best call ever made by an umpire if it benefited the team employing the announcer would be the biggest travesty if it benefited the other team. I don't mind knowing that you support your team but please, don't make fools of yourselves.

The difference here is, the ESPN Crew is supposed to be neutral, and I'll admit, I don't know if they were favoring either team. That being said, when you watch a Team's Broadcast, you can go into it knowing that the announcers are going to be favoring their own Team, since they aren't being paid to be neutral, but to call the game for "their Team". The Great Crews, I think, would be those that, while they do still favor their own Team, they can be, more or less, neutral with the other Team, complimenting great plays by them, and so on, even if they're, for example, cheering for the ball to fall short of a home run for the other Team, and out for a home run for "their" Team.
Perhaps in this case, but even at this level announcers still show their bias. Back to one of the only times the Seattle Mariners made the playoffs, when they were behind they were a bunch of amateurs who had no business playing in the big leagues. The only time anything half-way complimentary was said about them was when they were leading.
The situation is even worse when it you listen to a team's broadcasters. I can't help but think that if their team was so absolutely perfect then why do they lose any games?

I like it when the announcers for one team appreciate a good play made by the other.
I remember a game earlier this year where the Marlins got absolutely jobbed by the umpires and lost because of it, and the Mets broadcast crew, instead of celebrating the win, made it very clear they did not like that call whatsoever. I think they've earned my respect just because of how they handled that call, and to be honest, when the Marlins play the Mets, I'd rather watch their broadcast crew than my own team's broadcast crew.
Around 2500 pitches a night, give or take a few hundred depending on the number of games. The calls even out for the most part. Quit your fuckin complaining.

I'm going to call out a factual error. I am good friends with Erich, and he is closer to 5'10", not 5'7". He's an excellent umpire, one I've worked with many times. Chalk this up as a rough go and move on. He looked great in the Orioles/Twins game on 5/26.

Female umps will not be treated the same as male umps. Managers will not be as aggressive and neither will players when arguing a call.
If everyone is so up in arms about women being included in men's sports, then in the instance of baseball, shouldn't Women's Softball be eliminated all together?
I'm guessing that there would be more female umpires in baseball if women actually played baseball.
The NFL and NBA both have female refs. As usual, MLB is always the last major American sports league to adapt to societal change.
I'm not a baseball umpire, so I don't know how a female umpire or the umpires in general would react to a player or manager chewing out a female ump over a call that she made. but I'd like to think there would be some level of respect for treating a female ump the same way you would treat a male ump. that would be equality in its truest form.

Women play Baseball and Men play Softball. Just look it up on TH-cam. The WBSC is making a good job in getting these sports accessible to all.
And you might not believe it, but with 166cm I do see the zone just fine and I’m being treated just like my male colleagues.

And why are you making height of an umpire a gender issue? As much of a douche as A-Rod can be, he wasn't wrong to bring it up. I would think even an up at 5'10 would have an altered perspective calling balls and strikes than someone who's 6'2-6'3.

A-rod has no business in the broadcast booth. His commentary is just plain horrible and quite frankly just stupid.
"He will get better" I think is an unfair argument. As a team if you feel your being screwed by what you see as unfair calls are you supposed to just sit back and watch because"oh in a couple of years this guy will have a better strike zone". As unfair as it is players have the chance to struggle and bounce back because the game is about them. If an umpire cannot handle being in the major leagues there are plenty of other leagues to practice and get better.
