Ejection 160 - Andy Green Ejected on Day 1 as Cubs Acting Manager After Tom Hallion's Slide No-Call

  • 2B Umpire and Crew Chief Tom Hallion ejected Cubs bench coach/interim manager Andy Green after a bona fide slide rule interference no-call on Pirates runner Kevin Newman's slide. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2021/...
    Unlike college (NCAA), which uses a force play slide rule (FPSR) standard that would declare this runner out for failing to slide in a direct line between the bases, professional baseball (OBR) uses a bona fide slide standard.
    According to slide rule OBR 6.01(j), a runner meets the criteria for a bona fide slide by:
    1) beginning the slide prior to reaching the base;
    2) being able and attempting to reach the base with a hand or foot;
    3) being able and attemping to remain on the base after completing the slide;
    4) sliding within reach of the base without changing pathway for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder to break up a double play.
    Although this is a reviewable play, Chicago was out of challenges due to an unsuccessful challenge earlier in the game on a play at home plate. The Crew Chief is unable to initiate a Crew Chief Review on non-HR boundary calls prior to the 8th inning.

      I agree. I think Andy Green wasn’t necessarily as mad about Hallion’s call, but instead more about the missed call at home that caused them to not have a challenge for Hallion’s call. The replay system is good, but it feels so flawed with the “indisputable evidence” aspect. A lot of calls get missed because it’s so difficult to overturn calls. Unless they have the absolute perfect camera angle, they're not going to overrule.
      I agree he was safe. However, with the first base side camera, they can say the catcher blocks the view so you can't, with 100 % certainty see when the tag is applied.
      Same with the 3rd base camera. Because of the angle, you can't see if the glove brushed the runner's leg.
      Since the call on the field was out and they don't have 100% confirmation the runner was safe (despite what our eyes tell us) they have to uphold the call
