This is a compilation of Minnie Riperton htting her Whistles and Super Head Voice Notes in live concerts
Aside from her various hits, Riperton is perhaps best remembered today for her ability to sing in the whistle register, in which she had rare facility. Riperton possessed a five-octave vocal range (the liner notes to her Petals legacy album ascribe five-and-a-half octaves to her). Riperton's ability to enunciate in the high registers set her apart from most other whistle-register singers. Riperton was also noted for her ability to sound almost mechanical or instrumental in the whistle register. She has also been credited for her ability to sustain notes in the sixth and seventh octave for long periods of time. Having an innate ability to imitate many instruments helped lead to Riperton's discovery while she was a secretary at Chess Records. - เพลง

I'm a 14 year old male, and surprisingly, I've just about managed to master the whistle at 1:30. I don't know how I do it, but my absolute range is an F2 to a Bb6.

Butler Hm... if you're a bass I'd suggest collaborating with other people (like, in a band or whatnot) because from my own experiences, the bass notes really round out the tune of the song.

I haven't heard it since,...her voice, so crisp, clear, flawless. Minnie was a certified 7 octave whisper register. We saw her break a glass with her voice in 1976. I was a young girl at the time & I remember being so impressed.

In my humble opinion, she is a pioneer for a few reasons, mainly these:
-She did not possess the BEST whistle register ever known but as you said, she made it popular.
-Other Pop stars went on to benefit from her popularity by using & perfecting the whistle register in Pop music then using it effectively in the decades to follow.
-She died at a young age yet impacted the Pop industry for decades, perhaps centuries to come.

Her articulation in the whistle register is unrivalled to this day. Also, she sang a whole song in the whistle register , harmonising and all.
In the song “You take my breath away”, she executed the most solid portamento that I have ever heard in my life reaching an F7 and sustaining it.
Her ability to imitate instruments and birds is uncanny.

Whistle allows you to hold lower high notes with more ease . Because you’re using less air to hit the note than if she uses her head voice to hit the same note she may have a harder time holding it that long
She was trained as a light soprano using classical vocal technique and she had a natural stratospheric coloratura. These two circumstances made her the incredible singer that she was, natural talent for singing high notes and study, she can sing a complete scale from lower notes to whistle register up and down. I'm sorry if I'm an ignorant but There's no one like her nowadays (and I love Mariah Carey voice). Thank you for posting this video

Minnie was a trained lyric coloratura soprano. She trained at Chicago's Junior Lyric Opera and had a five(5) octave range.

So, Minnie was the first person to take this opera style and put it into elements of r&b and jazz… we know that the whistle register was not created by her, but we and our parents and grandparents who only cared for pop and soul music were introduced to this girl who sounded like she was screaming, yet it sounded BEAUTIFUL. And look at how effortless it is to her! When shes wearing the blueish silk she was DYING. She had lost feeling in her right arm. It was one of her last performances, aired less than a month before she passed. And she was still singing as if she were FULL OF LIFE. I love Mariah too, but if someone asked her to do her registers after she had just given birth I wonder how it would've sounded? Lol. Mariah has to put more effort into it when she sings, it was as easy as talking for Minnie. RIP 😢

Exactly many people were mentioning Mariah and trying to bash her; so I simply stated the obvious, which is that Minnie Ripperton is an amazing vocalist just like Mariah Carey is so they should stop trying to bash Mariah and just enjoy/appreciate the video.

So talented. I've just been smiling throughout this. Not only is her whistle voice so impressive, but her vocals in her standard register are stunning as well.
I always loved Minnie's voice. She could warble like a nightingale, on octaves that only birds can reach. She also totally owned that look of the white gypsophillia flowers pushed into her afro hair, which looked so stylish, sometimes going all the way round like a halo of tiny flowers.

And, it's rare for a whistle register recording artist to 1.) hold a note as long as Minnie ( Minnie can HOLD a note - she seems to hold it forever during the fade to INSIDE MY LOVE ) AND 2.) to compose GOOD SONGS. I just learned that the chirping birds in Minnie's classic song LOVING YOU was actually MINNIE! Also, the late Tupac Shakur sampled the classic INSIDE MY LOVE for his classic hip-hop/rap recording TO LIVE & DIE IN L.A.!

I was introduced to Minnie with Rotary Connection in 1967 and their debut LP. She left us way too soon. I would have loved to see RC in concert. She was phenomenal.
My late Mother and Father introduced me to Minnie Riperton as a kid. My dad especially loved her. If Heaven is real I hope they are both enjoying her in person.

Thank you so much for this! I saw Minnie perform live many times over the years and served as the vice president of the Minnie Riperton Legacy Preservation Society back in the 90s. She was my "homegirl" from Chicago, I was very friendly with her sister Clarice and I miss them both terribly. Thank you again for jarring such wonderful memories.

Diosha Johnson Mariah has had nodules since childhood which caused deterioration in her voice. Nevertheless removing the nodules could be worse for Mariah so she decided to keep singing but with amazing technique and rest to preserve her talent as much as possible. Mariah’s voice only matured and she is slowly but surely regaining back her voice.

Wow!! This woman could really hit those high notes! Such a great & versatile voice! She was Maya Rudolp's mother (Maya got her acting/comedy start on Saturday Night Live as a key player on the show.) I'm sure Maya misses her talented Mom dearly and my heart goes out to her! Some people are just born to be legends. Minnie Riperton was one of those people. She was the REAL deal!

This beautiful icon performer is the queen of octaves, the real original, some hit octaves...but Minnie sang in octaves....effortlessly, and didn't need to hold her ear as she did it.....natural all the time, no studio enhancements needed....Mariah and others pattern themselves after her....Minnie could hit notes so high, dogs would come running and we wouldn't know why!!😂 She passed away on July 12, 1979 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.🎀 😢 I adored this beautiful, talented lady and still do....her husband was Richard Rudolph....manager/writer/producer/musician and her son Marc Rudolph and her daughter the very talented and beautiful Maya Rudolph (SNL, Bridesmaids etc.)❤🧡💛💚💙💜

Minnie was undoubtedly a phenomenal talent. Hats off to the musicians who also arranged those pieces. The instrumentation is a pitch perfect companion to a singer of her caliber; especially on tracks like 'Memory Lane.' The fall of the strings & horns accompany the power of Minnie's range so superbly.

I think your confused hunny. Mariah Carey has some of the most seamless transitions (Better than Minnie). Her whistle register was connected to her chest and head voice. It was also very controlled unlike Minnie's some times.
I was always wondering if I'm using my whistle register correctly because my whistles sound strong and less airy, different from the ones I am used to hear. Seeing this vid makes me realize that I probably have a similar whistle tone to Minnie Riperton and this makes me appreciate my timbre even more. 😊 I also love the airy whistle, don't get me wrong, they are also amazingly beautiful. I'm just glad to see that I am not alone with my whistles sound and can take such a great artist as my inspiration for it. ☺
