I plan to donate my wedding dress to a charitable group that happens to be local to me. They make burial gowns for infants from donated wedding dresses.

My dress was a very big shouldered dress from the 80s so I made a Christmas tree skirt out of it for my daughter. It turned out really beautiful.

And watching you with your wedding dress, I realized I still have my wedding suit from 1983. I know, amazing. My wedding dress was a strapless burnt orange affair. After kerping it in a fancy storage box for 12 years, I gave it to my eldest niece for her grad dress. She loved it!

Our wedding cost a little over three hundred dollars, my dress came from a thrift store, it was the only one they had and it fit, so I don't have it anymore, someone else needed it.

I gave away my dress after my only daughter was ready to get married but had no interest in wearing my 1980s ‘Lady Di-influenced’ dress. But I made sure to find a charity shop that respected wedding dresses and didn’t turn them into Halloween costumes. I had psyched myself up for it. I brought it to the counter and said I had something to donate. The kid at the counter asked what was in the box. I said ‘my wedding dress’, had to leave quickly, then burst into tears on the way to the car. But, it was for the best. ❤️. I could then move on.

Hi. My wedding dress was so hard to let go of. My husband is deceased. I held on to it for a number of years. I let it go because it was just hanging in the closet in a garment bag in the basement. I donated to the thrift store so someone else could have a nice dress at a reasonable price for their big day. My dress was a try on dress off the rack for $49. There was nothing wrong with it when purchased and when sent to thrift store. In my head the couple who purchased it is married now and living happily ever after. Hope this helps anyone trying to let go of the sentimental stuff. Have a nice day.

I appreciate going over the sentimental items. I am 20 or so years older and that is the phase I am in. I received a suitcase my grandfather had and inside was family photos he had saved. It never took up much space but this year is the year I am transferring photos to digital. I have photos of my childhood that I never received from my parents. So a nice surprise that I am going through.

    I have a question... same question from 1st time I watched 🤔😊
You are telling us in 45 mins You dragged All that out from under stairs, went through All of it, made All those decisions, made the piles to dispose of All of it, cleaned the floor & put it ALL back - while talking & filming??
    ALL IN 45 MINS?!?
If so, You are not just extremely great at letting go by also move at super hero speed & You just slowed down the recording 50x so it would be at our regular person speed, eh?!? 🤨🤪
I'm having some trouble as You can see with figuring out how You can move SO fast?
Maybe You could teach that too while You teach us how to let go ☺️🤓
Maybe if I could move that fast, I could have a clean, uncluttered home too 🤔
First the hardest part... learning the many whys I hang onto SO much stuff!!
I am very happy to have found You. I joined Your paid group to learn & heal.
Praying I can learn to let go also.
Thank You for having a heart to help us. Blessings upon You & Yours!!

Another thing to think about, although it's kind of extreme, when you're really struggling whether to get rid of something or not: THINK: If I came home tonight and my house had burned to the ground, how many of the things inside would I actually go out and replace? The answer for most people, it's probably about 5%. 😮

I am a lifelong minimalist, and I had boxes for each of our two children. When our kids grew up and got married, I gave each of them their box.
Our daughter gladly embraced her box of childhood memories. She and her husband strapped the boxes to the top of their car. On their way home the wind ripped the boxes off their car, and scattered her memories across the interstate. She stood on the side of the road and wept, while her new husband took his life in his hands and dashed back and forth between vehicles and gathered what remaining treasures he could.
Fast forward 27 year, things change, people grow up and age. The loss of these treasures were experienced, wept over, and now are fodder for stories.
Robyn, as you say, live in the present. It is the only present each of us get!

It’s all still under my bed. I will get there within the next few days when I’m finished with the east things. I have decluttered for years. I have thrown away some things that afterwards I regretted, so I’m going to go slowly. I’ll know when I’m ready. I will visit the sentiment things, and I’m sure will get rid of some things. Thank you so much. I have shared this with my children. They are at the age where they are deciding what to keep and throw away from their children. You are a gifted communicator. ❤️

It took me 15 years, but I did let go of my wedding dress (went to a goodwill). I'm not having kids, so there is no chance of a kid wanting to wear Mom's dress- and tbh, not great odds someone would want to anyway with the ways styles change and odds of being the same size on the wedding day aren't great. It would make more sense to keep a veil or a hairpiece or jewelry to pass on to a kid who wanted that connection.
I'm also a solid 30 pounds heavier than I was at 25 years old, so I couldn't put it on again if I wanted to.
I have beautiful photos and other, smaller keepsakes from the day like the earrings I wore and of course, the ring that was added that day- and the husband! I still have the guestbook, which actually serves as a very nice storage for folks addresses if I want to send cards for birthdays or holidays, so I don't regret keeping it although it has been altered now and I don't use it the way it was intended.
Someone convinced me I needed a fancy cake server that you'd engrave after with your wedding day, but we forgot to bring it and I was thankful, because I returned it. What in the world would I need that for in real life?
I think we've gotten a little keepsake crazy!

I've learned so much! Now to implement it all 😂. On photos my husband spent months doing this but everyday he'd do a specific amount of scanning them. Now I'm going to divide them for my kids with a note do what you like with these. Then they can choose to scan for themselves or keep or get rid of. It's a lot of work but I think photos hold a lot of memories from their history and face it we do not take many printed ones anymore.

My late husband horded book, records, CD;s, cassettes, sheet music and papers,. H would pickup garbage from dumpsters and curbs. After he passed away I had to get rid of everything. He had papers from every house we bought or sold in the70's, 80's and 90's. Also paperwork from cars we owned. Now I can't stand to have any clutter anywhere. I told my daughter this is the first time in my life (I'm 72) that I need or love everything I have. Plus, I know where everything is.

When my grandma died a few years ago everyone in the family kept a little something coming from her home; I lived abroad then, so my father picked an object for me, so that I had something too. It's a stone-shaped cristal (glass?) object that has a bear engraved in it. Super cute. Except... I had never seen it before Dad gave it to me. Never ever. So, as nice as it is, it definitely does not remind me of my grandma at all, and never will. Time to let that go...

Will be downsizing at some point and decided I didn’t want to move it. Donated it to Red Cross which has a bridal shop in Edinburgh. Felt good it would go to someone who maybe could not afford new and Red Cross would raise funds.

I’m so sorry to hear about your especially difficult situation. Keep doing what you’re doing. Keep decluttering non-sentimental and less-sentimental items and this will help you and your home overall. 💕
I’m not an expert in this particular area, but I have found that I enjoy keeping a few special items of my father’s and displaying them (rather than a few dozen items packed away). So your idea of a memory table is great. I would suggest that you make sure that it’s special things that you can display and dust and generally keep looking nice. If it’s looking well cared for, then it’s an honour to your son. Also, make sure that this isn’t taking up space on a table that you need for your daily life now. Maybe a shelf or another table would be best in that case.
I hope this helps a bit.

At least get something out of them. I've told him that about everything. I'd hate to see it leave the family but I'm not going to put that guilt on him. If you have a hand truck, it works great for boxes😁 My fear of death is not so scary since Jesus saved me😇😇Our soul does live forever you choose where they live. When I decluttered my children's baby clothes, I kept a thought in my head about how a new baby could use them.

I hid $500 in a gift bag. Years later my brother in law called me and asked me if I was missing some money. I said $500! He said, "come and get it."

So many options… good point and you need to do what makes sense to you.

The problem with decluttering in Canada is that the people do not have a proper way for a sustainable recycling system and the country sends with no mercy all kinds of waste in containers overseas to poorer countries like Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, etc

I see your point and concern, but we have a better recycling system than many states and the bottom line is that we need t make a choice to not allow our current homes to be “temporary landfills”! One way of feeling better is if we make a conscious choice to reduce our consumption from now on.

@MinimalistHome But even having a so spectacular recycling system still sends containers of waste to other countries that have worse recycling systems?? Are you sure is it so good??

I still have the issue of People with Kurt Cobain from when he died.

Some old things still feel like treasures and that’s okay too. As time goes on (and especially we lack space), we can re-assess and sometimes let some things go.

Wasn’t in the mood for this- it was a little darker than I wanted today.

Sorry to hear that. Can’t get it right each time and I do try to get into some “darker” stuff, but I have many humorous videos as well!
