Tbh, I've seen some shady shops that did basically nothing and claimed to have done stuff, I've literally seen scrap metal welded together as repair for something that would need a replacement to be legally allowed to drive (they claimed to have replaced it...) worst thing is, they basically bribed the inspector to allow such vehicles to drive.

I had a customer who though we pushed the lock button on the key fob too hard or drove the car too fast because the lock button on the key fob didn't work. All we did was a transmission oil change.
Some people really don't want to know how things work, as if knowing would kill them.

I got yelled at through a 6 bay shop years ago ( sounded urgent) get to office, customer has the ro box in his hand (tickets all over the counter and floor) , I was, whats the deal here! He screams at me " you dropped my car off the jackstands and broke my doorlocks!". I took bout 4 seconds to wrap mind around that and busted out laughing. He got the option of clearing up and apologize or the police. Guess what he chose lol 😆

A lot of us who are versed in subject can tell you, a lot of this stuff failed on common sense stage, inside of many customers.

Usually its people who just want a 2nd opinion because they don't trust mechanics. In their mind, they either have serious issues or a greedy mechanic. So don't worry, those people get their stuff fixed.

I've seen something similar before. Someone played a prank by mounting a harmonica in the grill. Once up to a certain speed the driver heard a weird noise.

I had a move some wood planks that ended up resting on the passenger seat airbag location. With my wife as a passenger it was only a 10 mile trip back from the store. But first thing I did was to disable the passenger side airbag and reenable it when home.
That last mechanic checking out the front tire that popped out was probably mad because he probably just went out for a drive and then discovered he could have died test driving it.
Nah, its probably cause now it *has* to be repaired, and he knows the customer is gonna say "well, you broke it, cause it was fine when I drove it in, so I'm not paying for it"

@@varisguptaI have had something like that happen. One time they showed me the issue and how it was just luck it happened to them and not me. Made sense so I paid for the fix. Nothing as serious as that video though.
Another time I took my car back as it had a strong smell of petrol (gas) after service. They claimed I overfilled it. So I waited and it was still smelly at half tank. Turned out they had missed something when putting the tank back in to get at something else. They apologised and fixed it.

I understand if people aren't able to work on their vehicles, but so many of these aren't even at that level. They're just lacking common sense. Like the one with the parking brake issue....c'mon man. Or the one with the CD upside down.

He's very lucky that the engineers put a lot of effort into idiot-proofing those cars. Even still, the main safety features rely on mechanical relays that can weld themselves shut. That's why you should always assume that there's power in those wires.
This just reminds me of when my friend's dad tried to wire up his electric stove, which was 220...with two runs of wire rated for 110...
My dad, the electrician who found the problem, said "He should be very grateful that stove didn't work." It was basically a recipe to set your basement on fire.

It’s happened d a couple of times, but yeah it’s usually the customer.
It actually happens quite often. Just today I had a customer bring in a truck that had some "home repaired" wiring that I deemed to be a fire hazard. They didn't want that fixed, they only wanted a tune up... so we declined to do anything to it, knowing that if the truck did catch on fire, they'd try to sue us if we had done any work to it.
"Oh hell no. I can hear my lawyer and insurance company screaming from here, and I haven't even touched it yet."
Honestly makes sense, you don't wanna be the last one who worked on that before it inevitably breaks from something stupid the owner did to it
most shops give an estimate on how much it would be to fix everything, in this case there was so much wrong they refused to even work on it... I suspect the customer was warned that the vehicle is unsafe. The last clip is an example of why declining work when you immediately find something not mentioned is a good idea.

I noticed the issue but was so busy looking at the stupid that I didn't realize he said that. but yeah that's precisely what it would be if someone tried to go in more than a couple feet of water. It's not the first decorative only snorkel I've seen though.

Also the zip tie around the drive shaft (the long end slaps against the underside of the car until the plastic wears away) and I've seen a cowbell up near a pickup's spare tire.

That harmonica prank reminds me of a similar prank my uncle did to my mother back in the 80's when he swapped out her regular horn with an ahooga horn. She pulled over the next time she honked because she thought her car was dying. XD
Many years ago one of my uncles got into a prank war with my Dad (which is probably still ongoing to this day.) At some point my Dad installed a beeping reverse light on their car, and it took them weeks to figure that one out.

I ran into a similar issue with a customer. I thought it was a lockout, but I get there and they can get in just fine. Just can't get the e-brake to release. It took me a bit of fiddling and a really close inspection to find an screw for some eyeglasses (you know, those damn near microscopic ones) jammed in the switch. I used a pick to pry it out and it went flying but the brake released. Car was pretty spotless otherwise.
It's an american thing that I have never been able to figure out, but VERY few people use their parking brakes. Fortunately more and more vehicles automaticaly set it now, but yeah. I've encountered MANY vehicles with rustwelded parking brakes from never being used. (F-150's are notorious for this).
Baffling, and even worse, so many outwardly refuse to even try. I used to service water softeners, they are pretty simple and reliable despite maybe sounding scary to a non mechanical person. We had a 5 item checklist that I'm not kidding a 5 year old could work through. It was the 5 most common issues with the machines and also the easiest to fix ones too. So many refused to even entertain the idea of trying these 5 things. So probably 8 times out of 10 I'd get 65 bucks (in 2003 money) to plug the machine back in. The best was a guy that had the machine plugged into a power strip that was plugged into a 50ft extension cord that was plugged into another power strip that was plugged into a 25 ft extension cord that was plugged back into the first power strip. Soo he made a big no power loop. Turns out I fixed his drill and circular saw that day too. He actually facepalmed and said "I'm an idiot" as he handed over the 65 dollar check. Good times.

@@MeppyMan If the car drives straight with the steering wheel straight the steering is in alignment. Or at least that's what the customer would think.
@@MeppyMan there is no baseline, that's the point of a fully adjustable suspension. You set your own measurements based on a stock set up but how it rides is how you'd adjust it. Pain to set up but once it's set, it's good for a bit as long as you're a decent driver and not smacking potholes and curbs.

I hate pranks, but this is so much better than those tiktoc pranks, where for example, a woman doing the prank walks up to the couple and starts asking the man why he hasn't called her. Hopefully most of those are fake, but it's terrible if real.
I'm shocked that the car has electrical problems, there are clearly several inches of uninterrupted wire, and some of it is even the proper gauge, it should work just fine.
custom electrical guy I knew even had dealers sending him work: all Jaguars, Land Rovers, and Jeeps.
It blows my mind that people think they should monkey around with high voltage when they don't understand more than just basics about low voltage. Most people probably shouldn't mess with the 110 in their house without at least watching some safety tutorials on home electrical wiring...yet people try to jerry rig a nearly 400v battery...I'm shocked there weren't wire nuts on everything...

How do you miss subframe bolts? Things are huge, can't just sweep them up
I've seen them rattle out a few times. Shop (or owner) does work, doesn't clean the threads or the bolt, doesn't torque to spec or use loctite and 6 months later they're nowhere to be found.
Have also seen people who tried to change control arms on various models and weren't sure which bolts needed to be removed, and ended up throwing them out with the old parts.
Back in the 70's a kid glued a kettle whistle to a teacher's exhaust pipe. Enough flow to start the engine, but it would immediately start screaming. As soon as the throttle was pressed, the scream would go hypersonic, and the engine would quickly die.

I think it’s crazy how little people know about anything to do with their cars. Like you can’t figure out the CD is upside down or all the garbage is holding the park brake button down. 🤷♂️
Or they take the craziest 35 step workaround with improvised clamps and hardware from other machinery to avoid spending 60 bucks.
I remember once driving a long-distance taxi about 230 miles from my home base, getting there and the customer discovering that a rear door wouldn't open from the inside. So, I called my fleet manager, she started making arrangements to have the van go in the shop and the full nine yards.
It wasn't until I was halfway home that one of us thought to check the child safety lock.

One day the penny finally dropped. When my friends asked, I was too proud to admit, and just said yeah I got it fixed.

To be honest with the attention span of people nowadays of all generations, even the ones that grew up with CDs, I'm just impressed at all, that the costumer knew what a damn CD player was and attempted using it.

in just over a decade of towing, I never saw a ball joint let loose on the highway. I always saw them at low speed turns, which makes sense because that's when the most stress is probably on them
