Hygge is the warm smiley feeling you get inside when you hang out with friends, or you're sitting in a christmas decorated livingroom, or you're curled up with someone you love and a blanket while it's snowing outside. It's when you feel like you're getting a warm hug on the inside. From norwegian who's currently having it hyggelig (hygge-like) under a blanket, with a dog, more than five candles going, and youtube! Have a hyggelig jul
I felt that feeling one morning and it was truly and outstanding feeling, it was quiet and my room had just been turned minimalist the night before and I was so happy
Natural products defined: “In the broadest sense, natural products include any substance produced by life. Within the organic chemistry, the definition of natural products is usually restricted to mean purified organic compounds isolated from natural sources that are produced by the pathways of primary or secondary sources.” Thus meaning, natural products are ones that are made strictly from organic and natural compounds. Thus meaning, natural products just means, if it has a chemical in it, it’s not natural. I respect your opinion, but I just thought you didn’t know the full definition.😊😁🙌🏻
I’m Danish and “hygge” just means relaxing and being super cozy and comfortable, whatever that is for you😌😊I’ve spend plenty of “hyggelige” moments in the States😌Don’t get the super hyped marketing concept of “hygge”😌 Something everyone does...
Lucie Fink - I don’t think that’s true at all - that night you had with your sister and Michael - you can’t tell me that’s the first time ever you spend a night like that?? Or just hanging out on the couch with your man or your sister/best friend - that’s hygge too... any time where you are relaxed, comfertable and with someone you love, that’s hygge....
Lucie Fink it is the first time I am hearing that having a good time isn’t a part of someone’s culture. Hygge is having a good time with your friends, family or all by your self depending on what kind of person you are and to fulfill the need you have at that time, I’m from Denmark and I really don’t understand the hype. And a lot of stuff you are reading from the book sound like BS to be honest
Mariam Bibi - i agree - like, I get the comfy pants and sweater, and I get cozying up your home, but in Denmark we love candles, but candles are not what makes it hygge... neither is blankets and pillows or lighting.... that is all a stylechoise... Hygge is a feeling, and when you are trying to identify it, I guess all those things help, but that is not what is considered hygge in Denmark.... You don’t need to ‘stage’ hygge... hygge appears when you feel happy, loved and in a space or with people who make you feel that way... We use the word hygge to describe that feeling - but also to describe stuff that makes us get to that feeling faster.... for some it’s hyggebukser, for others it’s candles, for others again it’s just having a conversation... Hygge doesn’t have a ‘default-setting’ and you can’t make a manual and say ‘this is what hygge is’... because it is such a personal thing to define!
calamitasCorvus everything’s a mental problem these days. I’m thinking realistic if someone wakes up and cant look in a mirror they are doing to worry. Like “5 days with no makeup” she felt self conscious the whole time and maybe without a mirror she can boost her confidence. It’s 2018 everyone looks in a mirror when they get ready it’s a fact and think about how you would feel without it.
calamitasCorvus lol every morning routine on TH-cam and mostly anywhere the first thing they do is check a mirror I know I do so if that makes me have a mental issue then so be it and when you wash your face or brush your teeth do you have a mirror in your bathroom now that’s abnormal. Almost every person checks there mirror when they wake up it’s something you cant change.
I think it would be cool if you, Lucie, did a video were you tell us what of all the Challenges have really impacted in your daily life and the habits that you’ve changed because of the challenges. Merry Christmas 🎄
Would just like to clarify, that “hygge” is also a feeling. You can without a doubt have “hygge” at a beach, in the summer while wearing a summer dress.
Lucie Fink also cut the cinnamon bun with a thread! Wrap the thread around your told and tighten it until it’s cut! That way you keep the shape and not smush it with a knife
I, as a dane, would describe hygge (not pronounced hooga, but more like higge) as the feeling you get by being in cozy situations. Candels, a fireplace, comfy clothes, warm and toasty inside but cold outside, hot chocolate, and no worries and responabilities. So hygge isn't the situation itself but the warm, cozy, fluffy and relaxed feeling that comes with it.
OMG I JUST HAD THE BEST IDEA EVER! Lucy i want to see you try to live in a tiny house for 1 week! I would SO watch that video! Also i love ALL of ur videos
This could be a challenge but you could do five days of religious practices, (not necessarily all church or cathedral based, but maybe home practices?) or maybe holiday traditions like Christmas and Hanukkah? You live in one of the most positive diverse place here in the U.S for this and it would be really cool to see and watch you go about doing 🌼 love hygge moments!
I recently read this book and it inspired me to use hygge to get through the cold NY winter! Some hygge things I’ve done so far: Baked snickerdoodle cookies from scratch while listening to my favorite Danish singer, Tina Dickow, cross country skiied in the woods by my home, read Scandinavian thrillers while sipping coffee in bed in the morning, gathering with amazing women to talk about life and share a meal. 😌
Seriosly when i Saw The titel i was like, “ What Hygge?! OMG THATS DANISH! “ ( Danes loves when People from other countrys mention our country lol👌🏻😂 Thank you so much for inclueding our little country in your video🇩🇰💕! Hygge it’s such a Big part of danes Day, and The things you did Where really “hyggelige”! This is My New fav episode of TLWL! And The Way you pronounce hygge is litterly so fun for danes to hear. I dont know, but i Think The hygge comes from that there is so cold here and Then you stay inside and turn on some candles. I Can say that hygge is not pronounced “Hoo-ga”😂 Americans say Danish Y’s like U’s, so to me it sounds like you Said Hugge😂 Witch it’s close, but seriosly if you aren’t Born in Denmark you would not No How to pronounce it. It’s so hard to explain, but just come here and you Will could feel The hygge ( and The cold ), when you arvive here🤣 We love guests, but Ya we dont get tons Cuz it Can be really expensive to be here so Ya. LOVE THIS EPISODE Edit: Woaw Thank you for all The likes!
Hi honey, I just looked thru all your series & I donnnnt think you've done this but how about 5 Days No Technology (AT ALL!) Too hard? How about.... 5 Days No Internet Still Too Hard? I bet you could do.... 5 Days No Email. Lucy can do anything...for 5 days! 😊 Happy Holidays!
My winter hygge is: building a cozy canopy in the corner of my bedroom; Hot cacao with cinnamon & mini marshmallows; Reading a book in bed for an hour before sleeping; Cuddling up in a fluffy blanket with my dog; A lot of fancy soy candles; Being kinder to myself and others... and feeling extra grateful for my life!
After 4 months of living in Copenhagen I have to say, it comes naturally. When days are short and cold and cloudy or rainy you learn how to hygge pretty fast. I don't like burning lots of candles because I might forget I left them on, so I turn on some fake candles that look very real, and have a timer on them. And then a scented candle or two 😊.
Så hyggelig at du prøver deg på dette, jeg håper du koste deg!! 😉 I'm norwegian tho. But it's so fun that you're exploring the scandinavian culture! 😄❤
Wow..I have had so many Hygee moments without realizing it. My best Hygee moment is building a cozy tent in the basement with my kids and playing Monopoly with my family during Thanksgiving break while camping out in their living room. Best video so far. I am getting the book.
Nice video! I guess I've had a Hygge habit for years: I have tea time, with some little sweet snack almost every evening between 5 and 5:30PM. It's my way of unwinding and also centering myself after the workday. I've also started incorporating more candles into my life, which I enjoy. :-)
So funny when you say HYGGE doesn’t sound like in Norwegian or danish. I Bergen Norway we have sugar or powder-sugar on cinnamon-buns ✌🏻 Love from Norway
Soft warm blankets... fluffy comfy pillows... warm, cozy sweaters with leggings and thick socks... flavorful coffees, teas and hot chocolate... homemade baked treats, soups and stews... reading books/magazines surfing the Innanets while snuggling with my kitty... I’ve been practicing Hygge for years!!
Hygge is just a word we use to describe when we relax and unwind. It´s something you also do in your everyday life it isn´t something special, it´s something everyone also do, people just have a different word for it. By the way I am Danish. but great video, and great you hyggede
The y in hygge is pronounced kind of like when you say ‘you’. Or the u in fx Hugo. But the sound is a bit shorter :-) Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰🎄 I personally almost never light candles, and yesterday I enjoyed a hyggelig evening with my husband and pizza (not homemade). But yes - all kinds of meals can be hyggelige and if you’ve spend a long time making it together the whole food-making process is part of the hygge 😁 but we use the hygge-term quite freely - fx it can be hyggeligt running in to an old friend on the street. So it’s generally just whenever you do something that makes you happy.
Thank you for this video! My best friend has been going through a rough semester, and same for me, and this is something I felt we were missing in our day to day. I kept telling her she needs to find a little comfort in each day, but couldn't describe how exactly and this concept/book seems to do the trick! Just bought her, my other friend and I matching books for Christmas! Hopefully it helps us start off the new year on a good foot :)
Hygge is a part of both Denmark and Norway. As a Norwegian i can say that hygge is not really a planned event, at least there is no formula to make it, it just comes naturally . I can mention one the most hyggelige moments for me. My dad has a house right by a lake, during the summer it's great to have friends over there. We will make a bonfire in the fire pit, bring out a couple of mattresses, pillows, blankets, music and something to drink and snack on (what you like to drink or snack on is up to you). Usually the most hyggelig moments are from about 4pm and out. We would snuggle up on the mattresses outside with the dog as the sun goes down, in Norway the sunset starts from like 8pm until 0:30am (depending on where you are). I also remember going on cabin trips with my family as a kid, and we would make cocoa, my dad would play guitar and we would snuggle up on the couch with the fire on. So yeah, it's about a relaxed atmosphere, hanging out with friends and family and being present, how you want to make that happen is up to you.
Omg omg omg so excited to just watch this!! So I'm done, and this was goood. I hygge-d by getting comfy blankets for my room, extra lamps so the lighting is comfy and not harsh. Then occasionally I will grab tea, a pile of books and enjoy my room with some bossa nova or rain playing.
My grandmother (Elli) she moved to America from Denmark and raised my father here. We have a lot of these themes in our house such as cozy areas, lots of games and I bake often. I saw this vid and just thought this hugge was home, and comfort. It is where you can nap, chat, eat, snuggle, and do your own thing.
Thank you so much for doing challenge. I've always wanted to do this but I've never had the time to try it out. With this video you helped me see what Hygge real is😊
I love autumn and winter to some degree and before i knew hygge i realised i have been doing it my whole life ...who knew...but now i have new ideas. Happy Hygge people!
Hermione Granger My fav movie is Harry Potter fav character is HERMIONE GRANGER I literally have most of the wands read all the books 18 times and have a collection of books in different languages and a back bag and more
As a norwegian this was hillarious! Danish and norwegian is very similare in writing, but diffrent in pronounciation. You did pronounce it wrong and very american, but i dont blame you. Norwegian and danish is hard. Ps: i can link you a better recipe for cinnamon buns, those looked extremely odd!
yes, it is a lot about atmosphere but I would never call anything I do on my own hygge. so if you were to add a friend or two to the mix then perfect! "when you are multipule people who are feeling good at the same time, in the same place in peace and quit. When you feel like you could cut a piece of happiness, then it is hygge"
I’m Danish but in Denmark we don’t need to have a scarf on to hygge. Hygge in Denmark it’s like to be with your family and friends and just have fun and be happy. And it means a lot of things for different people. Love your series.
I’m from Denmark, and this video is great. There’s a few mistakes with the pronunciation on the different words but you are describing the term pretty good. A hyggedag (hugge day) for me is a Sunday with no plans, chilling around in my sweatpants, my biggest and most comfy socks, a big sweater. Then I like drinking tee, and being with my family and boyfriend ind bed or in front of the fireplace. Maybe going for a walk, but other than that just staying at home. Of course as many candels as possibly, and low lighting. This on of the hyggeligste (most hugge) things for me. But hygge can not be described, because it’s different from person to person❤️
If you put hygge through google translate Danish-English and press the audio button for Danish it is more correct. Not right but better then hoo-gah. :) love you're videos!!
“Hygge” just means hanging out with, or without friends. It isn’t something you do all day, it’s just something you find the time to do. So you basically relax with snacks, watch a movie, etc. We usually Hygge when it’s winter, because we like to be cozy, whilst watching the Christmas Canlendar. We usually don’t have a “Hygge crog”, we just sit on the couch, in bed or something else. And we ONLY burn calendar candles in school, so only from the 1st of December to the 24th of Demcember.
I'm Danish and i think you did a great job on this video. It was really nice how you tried to pronounce our danish words, and i think you did somewhat well :) I must admit that i've never thought much about how many candles we burn in other places than our home. Once in my school a whole window frame actually ended up in flames, because a candle that stood on the teachers desk, caught the curtains. If you want a great danish recipe on cinnamon buns, try googling "kanelsnegle", because they are a bit different and tastes amazing in my opinion
Always funny hearing how Americans pronounce words form other languages, especially my own. Hygge is something I actually take quite seriously, and I love laying in my couch with a cozy blanket, surrounded by fairylights and watching my favorite tv-show.
in denmark we use hygge as both an adjective and a noun. it can be used any time of year, and as an adjective it means cozy, fun or nice. we could say “det var en hyggelig dag” which means “it was a cozy/nice/fun/good day”. i think the reason it’s hard to describe is because the definition changes, depending on the context it’s used in
But really - Pyjama pants or yoga pants can be considered hyggebukser ;) even leggings ;) As long as it’s under an oversized sweater/shirt, then anything goes ;)
What is your favorite cozy winter tradition? Comment below!

'Natural products' is a bit vague.
Natural products defined:
“In the broadest sense, natural products include any substance produced by life. Within the organic chemistry, the definition of natural products is usually restricted to mean purified organic compounds isolated from natural sources that are produced by the pathways of primary or secondary sources.”
Thus meaning, natural products are ones that are made strictly from organic and natural compounds. Thus meaning, natural products just means, if it has a chemical in it, it’s not natural. I respect your opinion, but I just thought you didn’t know the full definition.😊😁🙌🏻

GOOD IDEA it was too oily lol
Lucie Fink also cut the cinnamon bun with a thread! Wrap the thread around your told and tighten it until it’s cut! That way you keep the shape and not smush it with a knife
When she said it wasn't good, I wasn't surprised. Because I think using flour instead of oil isn't just a good ideia, it's the normal thing to.
Foxtrot oil isnt normal!
Yes! Also, they need to rise again after you roll them and cut them. Time consuming but worth it ☺️

So yeah, it's about a relaxed atmosphere, hanging out with friends and family and being present, how you want to make that happen is up to you.
Love your series Lucie!!! love 'em!! ~
Previously you've done a $50 dollar budget challenge maybe you can try a $20 challenge this time :)
I love that!!
When she threw the sweater with all those candles around I just about had a heart attack

Yay! Love love love your 5 day challenges! They always make my day!
Hygge is also a thing we use to keep the winterdepression at bay. Our winters are very long and dark.
Im from norway🇳🇴norge🇳🇴🇳🇴😻Hygge is wen you are comfy and have your life perfect.
My grandmother (Elli) she moved to America from Denmark and raised my father here. We have a lot of these themes in our house such as cozy areas, lots of games and I bake often. I saw this vid and just thought this hugge was home, and comfort. It is where you can nap, chat, eat, snuggle, and do your own thing.
the 'huh' at 5:35 cracks me up :) You are great, Lucie!

I love this series, Lucie! Keep them up!
My first comment on any TH-cam video :=)
I think you might have to edit the description box. Hygge is not Scandinavian - it’s danish 🇩🇰🇩🇰
+helenamoller Updated! :)
Refinery29 We say "hygge" in Norway. But it's not a thing tho..
I still feel like it's a part of the scandivanian culture tho. Maybe we norwegians rather use the word "koselig" more than "hygge"?
It's Norwegian
Helena Møller Excuse you but Norway uses it too :)
Also part of hygge is getting out in the cold and doing the hard stuff so you actually enjoy the warmth instead of just being lazy and binge watching.
Please do a figure skating video!!!!!
yes, it is a lot about atmosphere but I would never call anything I do on my own hygge. so if you were to add a friend or two to the mix then perfect!
"when you are multipule people who are feeling good at the same time, in the same place in peace and quit. When you feel like you could cut a piece of happiness, then it is hygge"
5 days of organic makeup
I’m Danish but in Denmark we don’t need to have a scarf on to hygge. Hygge in Denmark it’s like to be with your family and friends and just have fun and be happy. And it means a lot of things for different people. Love your series.
Wow I’ve been Hygge all my life
I’m from Denmark, and this video is great. But hygge can not be described, because it’s different from person to person❤️
try 5 days of swedish FIKA !
This is the perfect episode for this season!!!
I'm from Denmark, but thats not how you say it!😂(it's not hooga)😂✨
Anna Ildensborg-Grooss how do you say it!!! I wanna know 😛
You pronounce it “H U (like in Huge)”+ G G E “ ☺️ - I think that’s the best I can explain it
Anna Ildensborg-Grooss why does the Meik Wiking book say “hoo-gah” then?
If you put hygge through google translate Danish-English and press the audio button for Danish it is more correct. Not right but better then hoo-gah. :) love you're videos!!
th-cam.com/video/QSXiH_0HgwI/w-d-xo.html
this is the correct way to say it:) lol
“Hygge” just means hanging out with, or without friends. It isn’t something you do all day, it’s just something you find the time to do. So you basically relax with snacks, watch a movie, etc. We usually Hygge when it’s winter, because we like to be cozy, whilst watching the Christmas Canlendar. We usually don’t have a “Hygge crog”, we just sit on the couch, in bed or something else. And we ONLY burn calendar candles in school, so only from the 1st of December to the 24th of Demcember.
+tiffanyle Thanks for sharing!
For the dutch people hygge seems to means the same as gezellig.
WOW thank you so much this is so nice!!!
I just become so happy, when i find well made videos that are about Denmark, because they are kinda rare :)
I think I’ve been living a Hygge lifestyle without even knowing!😳
I love that book so much! I just recently found this video and I was SO HAPPY!!! 😊
watching this made me feel so sleepy #HyggeLife
Always funny hearing how Americans pronounce words form other languages, especially my own. Hygge is something I actually take quite seriously, and I love laying in my couch with a cozy blanket, surrounded by fairylights and watching my favorite tv-show.
Where are the Danish people squad at?🙋🏼♀️
Astrid Houmand Heyyyy
I'm danish and thought this was a really cute video!
5 days of eating only veggies (morning lunch and dinner)
5 days without a mirror
Paige Schar that’s such a good idea
Love how well you captured it, especially the hyggekrog
Well done!! I am a dane and I approve😁 Nice pronunciation👍👍👍👍
I’m Danish and i love to “ Hygge” its just so fun to be together with the people you love
5 days of wearing coloured contacts all day long
in denmark we use hygge as both an adjective and a noun. it can be used any time of year, and as an adjective it means cozy, fun or nice. we could say “det var en hyggelig dag” which means “it was a cozy/nice/fun/good day”. i think the reason it’s hard to describe is because the definition changes, depending on the context it’s used in
She pronounce the words so cute😂
You’re reading My Brilliant Friend!! What an amazing book choice ☺️☺️
YES!!! In the middle of it now!
Also: “hyggebukser” translates somewhat to “comfy pants”
But really - Pyjama pants or yoga pants can be considered hyggebukser ;) even leggings ;)
As long as it’s under an oversized sweater/shirt, then anything goes ;)
I LOVE hygge. I'm so glad you enjoyed your experience!
5 days of veganism
I did that!! Hope you enjoy: th-cam.com/video/i6Xd-MbcWwc/w-d-xo.html
Yay you finally did 5 days of hygge! I finished reading that book 2 weeks ago 😀😀😀
