Problem importing .mp4 and .mts files into Premiere Pro 2021 and 2020.

  • I recently updated my operating system from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and as such I also updated all my adobe software including Premiere Pro. I was using Premeier Pro 2018 in Windows 7, but the Creative Cloud updater updated me to Premiere Pro 2021 version 15.2.
    When it did that I found that I could no longer import .mp4 files from either my gopro or from OBS screen cpaturing software, nor could I import .mts files from my panasonic camera.
    I couldn't find any help at Adobe, so I posted my problem on redit:
    / cant_import_mp4_files_...
    and some great folks helped out and solved my problem. I ended up having to reinstall Premiere Pro 2018 (version 12.0) which I was only able to do since one of the folks that responded to be on Redit posted a link to the installer file.
    So thanks for the help smushkin. I hope this helps someone else who might be having the same problem.

    HOLY FUCKING SHIT, I ACTUALLY FOUND A REAL FIX FOR THIS SHIT ON PREMIERE PRO CC 2021.
    First of all, the problem lies on having leftover files from a previous version of Premiere Pro in your computer. It conflicts with the 2019 version and beyond, making .mp4/.mts and everything else stuck on the import progress bar.
    How to fix this crap?
    1 - Uninstall Mainconcept Codec Suite from your computer just to make sure;
    2 - Browse to C:/ProgramFiles/Adobe/Common/Plugins/7.0 (or some other number you have there)/Mediacore
    3 - Delete everything inside this Mediacore folder, it's mainconcept related crap
    Now you can import .mp4 files on Premiere Pro 2021 just like you could do in previous versions and it'll get rid of all those mainconcept errors you often get in 2018.

      Thanks Lul m8. Well done on finding a solution. I am in the US at the moment away from my computer, but I will have a crack and see if I have these codecs and can use the same fix. But you are right, having to constantly find workaround for Adobe software is a massive pain in the arse.

      @lul m8 You are a god amongst men. You posted this solution that worked for you while I was over in the US, so I wasn't around my computer to give it a try. I just did exactly what you said. Closed PP2022 uninstalled the Mainconcept Codec Suite (which I had installed), went to the C:/ProgramFiles/Adobe/Common/Plugins/7.0 folder and deletced the folder Mediacore. When I restarted PP2022 the files just imported with all their audio and worked perfectly. That's amazing. Well done on finding that fix.

    I have been facing the same problem ever since "Upgrading" to 2021. I could not import any video files. Then I created an output video file in CC 2018 version hoping that it could be imported into 2021 shxt. But even that file could not be imported into CC 2021. This clearly shows that something is SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH CC 2021. I am paying yearly subscription for something that is totally worthless. You are saying your problem was solved - well, downgrading to an older version is not considered a solution.

      Oh, I agree. I hate work arounds with a passion. I hate it even more that problems can exist for Years in Adobe sofrware, and the forums are full of people having the same problem and Adobe never does anything about fixing the problem.

    HELLO HEYDN! Recently watched and extremely enjoyed your video tutorial! I just got a Sony XDCAM and discovered that I can put my SXS to SD card adapter directly into my card reader on my computer, transfer the files to my capture drive, the files show up as a folder called BRAV! Inside this folder is another folder called CPLR! Iside this folder are lots of Sub folders containg the actual video files! I have to open each folder individually, Rename then save to a Capture location! Then when I go into Adobe I go into Media Browser, locate the capture drive and the files pop-up into thumbnails! This is too many extra steps and very time consuming!I What is the most effective way to import XDCAM footage into Adobe Premiere! What are your thoughts?

    Using Adobe Premiere Pro 2020. I first had the same problem trying to open up an mp4 video file.
    Seems to work fine if you do the following….
    1. In the top menu bar…select “Import”….
    2. Browse to the mp4 file location…..
    3. Select the mp4 file and type, paste, or drag it into the file name input box.
    The “Supported Media” type selections shows just to the right of the file name input box.
    4. Select that box and scroll down to the MPEG Movie type selection. Select that type.
    It should show just to the right of the file name input box. The long list of extensions is shown (including mp4)
    5. Open the file now.
    My version of Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 now opens this mp4 video file as expected. Maybe this will help?

    Hi Haydn, I've got the same problem but I don't want to downgrade to 2018 edition. I think it may be other solution like installing some missing MP4 codecs. Cheers!

    • @lulm8428

      nO, You must delete the codec inside your older Premiere folder, there must be a leftover there with maincodec stuff

    Hi Haydn thank for this video. I also had the same issue as you, upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10, tried to install PP 2021 and got frozen import there. Wasted like 6 hours of my time before finding your video and reverting back to PP 2018.
    Ironically, I upgraded to Win 10 because I wanted to use PP 2021.. *sigh* This is me after using Win 7 since 2013..
    I suspect PP 2021 must have some conflicts with the remnant of Win 7 codec libraries or there might be some migration issue there.
    Maybe if I do have sometime later I'll just do complete reformat of C and do clean install of Win 10.

    • @AusFastLife
      @AusFastLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Hikari, if you do try a clean install of Windows 10 it would be great to hear whether that then allowed PP2021 (or whatever is going by that stage) to work properly, since yes it would be good to be able to use the updated adobe software.

    • @hikarichannel9817
      @hikarichannel9817 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AusFastLife I didn't do clean install of Win 10. What I found was there was this codec library installed from when I had Windows 7. I couldn't remember the exact name as I had uninstalled it but you can see it on the programs & features install list in the settings.
      Once that one was completely cleaned, PP 2021 and in fact latest Premiere worked flawlessly.

      I am sorry this wasn't the solution you were looking for Elijah. I feel your pain. I have also gone through all of You Tybe looking for solutions to problems. I think the main issue is that there are as many problems with Adobe software as there are stars in the night sky, so what worked for one person, isn't necessarily going to work for another unfortunately. In this video all I was trying to do is find how to reinstall Premiere Pro 2018, since that is what I needed. I managed to find an installer for that older version thanks to Reddit, so for me this soved what I was trying to do. If that was not what you needed then absolutely, I can see how that would be a frustration. I hope you are able to find what you need my brother. Best of luck!
