We use hemp deep litter system in our coop. Works pretty good but it’s up off the floor too. We would do your method if ours we’re on the coop door too. Good job!
I dont know if it's the best way, but it sure has worked well for us. Others may have a completely different view, such as others using the deep litter method but using hemp or wood chips for the media versus straw. Straw has worked well for us. Thanks for visiting the channel!
I'm trying straw today, I'm a new chickens mom LOL I see your straw dose turn into soil , how often should I clean my coop out , I live in the cold northeast the winter gets pretty cold here .
I was told straw could harbor mites, that could take over the coop. Have you had any issues? I'm currently using mulch. My coop also floods frequently.
Mites can be present in any bedding material which is why it is vital that chickens have a way to dust bathe. We intentionally left a small pile of dirt outside of this coop and that that were they bathe. Dust baths are the chickens principle way of keeping parasites and in particular mites under control. We have never had a mite problem using this method. Now if they were confined and did not have an area to dust bathe then I would bet we would have a problem within a few months. Great Question!!! Thanks and welcome to the channel.
Funny Chicken.
