    Indeed, I agree, well done Nikon! The Z5 deserves a bit more attention!

      @@guentermartinsich9898 I bought third party replacements from Lazada (online selling platform in Malaysia), ripped off the old ones and attach the new ones. The covers for Z5, Z6, Z7, Z6 II and Z7 II are the same, so the replacement rubber covers are plentiful and quite easy to find. Not sure about ZF though, since it is a new camera.

      I had the same problem with my Olympus OM5 so it's not unique to the Z5 or Nikon. And I don't even live in a hot and humid climate.

      The Z5 is so very underrated. Its better the than the applauded 750; and when introduced most reviewers were saying don't but the Z6 unless into video. Even using as a webcam the resolution beats anything AT EVEN 4K

    I have had only Nikon cameras all my life, and now at 72 I enjoy them as much as I have since the first one. I bought a Z5 last year, the first full frame camera I've purchased, and am very pleased. I still have a D7200 that complements the Z5 nicely. I would like for you to do a complete "recommended settings" video for the Z5 if you have time.

    Hey Matti you asked me to give some feedback and I'm thinking considering the Z5 is such an affordable full frame, dual card slot, IBIS toting, no skimping on ergonomics all round camera with Z mount, access to all Nikon glass, and almost every other mount under the sun (including e-mount). How can you go wrong. Talking video, you called it 'lame'. It delivers 4K 24,25 and 30p with a 1.7x crop. APSC is 1.5x (Nikon, Sony) and 1.6x in Canon, and you seemed to compare it at times to your a6700 APSC which has a constant 1.5x crop. For a content creator sitting in their studio turning their 28mm lens into a 47.6mm FOV eqv, I shoot almost all of my talking heads at 50mm. So for a content creator it is great. And if you want to vlog on the run you can grab a 16mm (27mm FOV eqv.), 18, or 20mm. For me considering the solid entry level photography spec, and the fact I can still get 4K for any situation, you just need to choose the right lens, and if you need, you can get 60p in 1080p, 2.5x slow mo in 24p timeline.
    As for the rubber sealing ... I live in Australia, I still own Nikon cameras from almost 20 years ago, their seals over the ports still work all these years, as they originally did. As was said somewhere, the Z5 camera you are using in this video was purchased 2nd hand by your friend. There is no way of knowing how it has been treated. Also I wonder if more humid environments cause the rubber to act in different ways as I have never experienced this here in Australia, I live in the south, not much humidity here.
    The Z5 is four years old, and is a previous generation camera from Nikon Expeed 6. The Expeed 7 Zf, if you had compared, yes more expensive, but an absolutely outstanding full frame camera, with great video spec and stills spec, AF focus up with the Z8 and Z9, an IBIS unit bettered by none, and still very affordable.
    I can see today the A7 C II is $2198 vs Zf $1996, perhaps two cameras that are closer together in spec, than Z5 ($1296 full frame) and a6700 ($1398 APSC), which seem hard to compare other than price. Card slots different, sensor size different, ergonomics different, video spec different, generation different .... and so on.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much for your feedback my friend.
      I did not compare the Z5 to any specific Sony but I mentioned Sony's different approach to focus tracking.
      I'm thinking if you buy full frame you'd want full frame video (4k) too and that's my reason to call the video features lame.
      My good friend and a long time Nikon shooter in Finland (not hot nor humid) says his Z6 has similar issue with the rubber flaps. There are other reports as well. So I guess it is some kind of a problem but your experience shows it's not a universal problem.
      The global pricing is interesting. In Finland the Zf is about 100€ more expensive than the A7CII.
      Anyway, as I said in the video, the Z5 is an excellent camera and an excellent value.

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mattisulanto :) Now worries Matti, perhaps there is more moisture in Finland, rain and snow, than Australia. And as these parts are made of rubber, I could see moisture changing the equation. From myA7R, A7R III D3s, D4 D850, Z6, Z6 II Z7 and more, all their seals are still working as originally intended. So indeed the world is varied, experience is varied and mileage does seem to vary.
      As for full frame sensor and not getting the full read out in its highest res. Indeed that is the case. There are other notable cameras that come to mind that have the similar attributes, one for example the A7R V shoots 8K (its highest spec) and at 8K 24p there is a crop of 1.24 X. In both cases what we can see is the camera companies are pushing their cameras as hard as they can. And in both cases the cameras can only read the actual pixels for the video resolution, and there is not sufficient power to use the full frame and interpolated to the given resolution. It's a pretty standard move. The very new A7C II in 4k 50P is 1.5x crop, I would prefer to have 50P with crop than not. So in these cases, the Z5 and A7R V A7C II, personally I am happy that we get 4K and 8K respectively and pushed frame rates, rather than Sony or Nikon saying we cant get full frame, so we won't offer it. Ultimately I see it as an advantage, having the higher spec video with a crop in each case, rather than not getting the higher spec. :)

    I bought this camera used about a year ago. The AF options took me a while to get used to (my previous camera was Nikon d5100). The articulating screen was a disappointment as the 5100 had a much better articulating mechanism. My final gripe is the remote. Using a wireless remote on the 5100 worked well. On the Z5 you must use the app which has frequent hiccups. The bluetooth remote while technically works is totally unusable in practice. Overall I love the Z5, especially the image quality! I’m still experimenting with lenses to see which tradeoffs I’m willling to live with (too heavy vs high variable aperture vs prime, etc). I started with 24-200 with 50mm prime. Right now I have 28-400 for outdoors and travel and 24-70 2.8 for indoors plus outdoor portraits. Both are very heavy. I’m thinking of going to 24-70 4 and 50mm (while keeping the 28-400). It seems silly to have 3 lenses that all cover 50mm, but that lens is sooo good.

    Matti, they also make a really sharp 50mm lens for Z mount in the Nikkor lens line. A real value lens, which goes on sale now and then. I am shooting the Nikon and Lumix, with occasional Olympus, more and more, as the Canon RP sits on the shelf. The Nikon Z5 simply outshines the RP, though that camera was once a fair deal. The dynamic range and so much more just places the Canon down a notch or two.

    Hi Matti - nice overview. That said, you should keep in mind that when you compare the tracking of the Z5 to the A7 IV you are literally comparing a generation 1 camera to a generation 4 camera from Sony.
    Have you tried any of the Nikons with the Expeed 7 processor like the Zf or Z8/9 (Z5 is using Expeed 6)? If so, you would find that these cameras auto focus and tracking are on par and in some ways superior now to modern Sonys.
    As you pointed out, the Z5 is now 4 years old - it is expected to be refreshed soon and when it is it will have the new Expeed 7 and all the benefits that come with that processor. Nothing on the market will come close to that camera for under $2000 USD and my guess it the Z5 will not exceed $1500.
    You mention how good the 40mm f/2 is for its price point and you are correct. Have you tried other Z lenses or any from the S line (pro line)? The Z lenses are class leading across the board. Nikon now has the best set of 1.8 primes for any system and their 1.2's are exceptional and ground breaking. The Z mount, which is physically superior to all other mounts due to its 55mm throat diameter and 16mm flange - allowing for optical designs that simply are not possible on other mounts - especially the Sony E mount that is a jury rigged APS-C mount with a mere 48mm throat diameter. As such, Nikon is now able to make superior optics for the Z mount that cannot be matched and we have seen this for the last 2 years - Nikon boasting the best telephotos in the business now and their standard primes (as mentioned above) are class leading.
    Furthermore, due to the dimensions of the Z mount it is possible to adapt lenses from other systems to Z camera - this is NOT true in reverse. For example. with the newest Megadap Pro adaptor we can now adapt all Sony E mount lenses to the Z system with near native and in many cases native functionality - meaning that any Sony lens is now a Z mount lens. The same is true for Fuji X mount, Canon EF mount, and Leica M mount. It is just a matter of time until there is an RF to Z.mount converter - especially now that Nikon has bought RED which uses the RF mount.
    Speaking of RED and video - you mention that the Z5 is not a great video camera and you are most correct - that was not really part of its design parameters, but the Z8/9 are literally the best hybrid full frame video cameras on the market and have been now since the inception of the Z9 at the end of 2021. There is no Sony hybrid camera that can do what the Z8/9 can do.
    And - all of this is prior to Nikon incorporating any of its newfound cutting edge video technology that they now have access to due to their acquisition of RED.
    If there were ever a reason to come back to Nikon (I never left and have been shooting Nikon since 1986), its now. There is nothing that your A7 IV can do that the upcoming Z6III (to be releases in the next couple months) will not do better for the same price or less, and you will have access to the superior Z lenses and most importantly superior Z mount. As far as your Sony glass goes, just get the Megadap adaptor which is not expensive (something like $250) and then you can adapt all your Sony lenses to your new Nikon with full functionality - also this adds only 2mm of length and almost no weight to the set up. The Z6III is expected to be a monster video camera as well as being as top notch stills camera - it is expected to shoot up to 6k 60 with no crop and with internal 12 bit RAW capability.
    Your issues with the menu and switching between modes and subject detection have been fully addressed in more recent Nikon cameras and will be fully addressed in the Z6III as well so no need to worry about any of that.
    Its a great time to be a Nikon shooter - do yourself a favor and come on back. As noted, your cost to switch is minimal as you can still use all your Sony lenses for the small fee of the Megadap adaptor, but you will find that you will not use many of them in short order as you start to pick up Z lenses and phase out the Sony ones. The Z lenses (more often than not) are just better - seriously, go see for yourself - you will not be sorry.
    -PD

      Thanks for your extensive comment.
      The rumored Z6III would of course be an awesome camera but also newer than the A7IV and therefore any comparison would be unfair😀
      I'd love to own every camera system from Canon to Panasonic and everything in between. However that is not possible because I can't afford all that😀
      Unfortunately I can't become 100% Nikon shooter for mainly two reasons.
      1. There is no Nikon representative in my home country. As a TH-camr I want to have a direct contact to my camera brand and I want to be able to borrow gear if necessary for testing.
      2. As a TH-camr I want to able to test and try out third party lenses. Right now the support for Sony is still way better than Nikon support. That may change in the future but not any time soon.

    • @photographydiscourse1185
      @photographydiscourse1185 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mattisulanto Understood - those are some good reasons. Its too bad, maybe Nikon will step up their support game along with how much they have stepped up the products.
      As far as the Z6III being newer than the A7IV that is correct and a reasonable assertion. I suspect that the Z6III will easily compete with a newer A7V in the future however as Nikon has built in to their cameras longevity through a firmware update program that is second to none. I think we will see Nikon cameras out pacing the others more and more in the next few years, but we will have to see.
      In any event, I understand your reasons, but again you could stay with Sony and simply buy one Nikon body and the Megadap and then just use your Sony glass (for now) - at least this way you would have the benefit and fun of shooting the Nikon which we both know the Sony's just don't provide. Sony's are good functional tools but relatively soulless to use - any old school photographer (like yourself) knows this - in some ways this is the reason for the success of products like the Zf.
      Anyway, thanks for the video - all the best! :)

    The only problem is that the autofocus is not in the same league as the new cameras from Nikon.
    Finally, a small tip, try the new Sony A7CII, because the autofocus improved quite a bit compared to e.g. Sony A7IV and on par with the top models from the competition, if not a little better and at a cheaper price!

    Great review Matti, and always good to watch your videos. I have a Fuji X-T30 with a few lenses and I have been thinking of buying a full frame camera as well (my budget restricts me to used) and I narrowed it down to a Nikon Z5, Panasonic S5 or maybe a Sony A7 111. I just can't get away from my SLR film day nostalgia. Would you have preference out of those 3. Are the Nikon Z5 dislikes you mention very much of a reason to avoid that camera. I use the horizon level too and I wouldn't want that great big visual popping up all the time. I don't do video these days. I'll be keeping my Fuji X-T30 anyway. Thanks for your thoughts if you have time to reply.

      I have never tried to choose between those three excellent cameras. I suggest you list the features that are important for you and then see which of those three matches that. In addition to that if possible go and see and feel those cameras at the local camera store. Then pick the one that is the best compromise between the features you like and how it feels in hand.

    I own the Z5..along with the ZF ( absolute fav) and a couple of D750 and a D810... honestly the Z5 would have been perfect if it had at least 7fps, for predominantly static shots or still subjects, no problem but once you track something with it like a moving toddler or a pet, it becomes unbearably unusable and would only guarantee me below 40 percent in-focus accuracy and the D750 gives me way more keepers most of the time. I think Nikon missed the boat on this one
    This is the only complaint I have, It is a great video camera and stills for the price, only problem is it doesn't track too well

    Its a good camera. But the only thing I don't like about it no vertical battery grip. As a wedding photographer I like vertical grips.
    The one thing I don't get why Canon, Nikon, Sony make their grips with a dummy battery that goes into the camera body and two batteries go into the grip. I like how Panasonic and Olympus do it one battery in the body and one battery in the grip.
    I know you can swap batteries with the Nikon grips but if you push the wrong lever you can pop out the battery and kill the power to the camera. The reason this scares me as a wedding photographer I don't want to pop out a battery then the camera is writing to a card. I like to have as many safety nets as I can.

    If Nikon did a Z5 II with the tech they have now, it would be a blast. Sure, after they release the awaited Z6 III first. :)
    Other than that, as well as the superior in range Z6, the Z5 has the same frustrating points - mainly the autofocus in auto-area, tracking, and similar, which are usable, but not great, as Sony's (even in the a7 III) days are. And the sensor is the older one from the D750, and has a huge crop for 4k.
    Other than that, the Z5 has great ergonomics, 2 card slots, joystick, and is very cheap if bought used.

    Viewfinder “not bad”. What the hell do you want? It’s a 100% viewfinder, 3.69million dot, 0.8x magnification. You’re being a little disingenuous given that Sony needed three attempts to get their autofocus working properly on the A7 series and still do not offer anything like the Z5 for the money. Also, the Z5 is a stills oriented camera so of course the video features will be taking a backseat. You are coming across as being a bit annoyed with the Z5.
