Truth is Blue-Grass music is not Mozart or Handel where the music graphics is very complicated. With proper tuning on a stringed instrument, a few chord patterns can easily cover all the notes that Blue Grass needs. Also you can play by ear and never read a note once you know the melody.
In case he doesn’t get a chance to answer you, he had a foreign exchange student live with his family at some point in time. The young man now has the company called “Cometa” and if I remember correctly, they make some kind of biometric sensors that work underwater and Jerry was/is a sales rep for that company. That’s as best as I remember it but I may be off on some of the details.

Another thing: I "learned" on a 4 string Ukulele and 3 chords. C G and F. those 3 contain all the notes in one octave do, ray me, fa, so, la, tee, do.
