Masters Swimming World Record Holder, National Duathlon winner, and coach, Karlyn Pipes demonstrates five techniques for improving freestyle using the Vasa SwimErg and underwater video instruction. These techniques will lead to more efficient freestyle swimming and increased stroke power to achieve speed, sustained power, and freestyle endurance:
    Technique 1. Hand Placement.
This describes how to achieve perfect high elbow catch / early vertical forearm in your freestyle stroke. A proper set-up of the stroke is critical and enables the swimmer to get more power from the stroke.
Essential Techniques to Improve Freestyle Swimming

Technique 2. Fingertip Orientation: High Elbow Catch or Early Vertical Forearm

This was the first video I watched, when I started learning to swim last year in June. Forgot all about it as I have watched so many especially TI videos. But lately started looking into something call EVF, to possibly lower my SPL. And now I find myself back here after doing a search. When I first watched it, the concept was foreign and too much to grasp. Now I get it. She really knows her stuff! Thanks!

I love teaching what is essentially your techniques in the pool. Wish I had seen or had access to this type of detailed information when i was struggling 5-6 years ago. It's a never ending wonder to me that more swim coaches don't teach specific hand/arm placement technique.
However, I suspect, they are unable to do so as they often only know how to make people race up and down the pool doing 60 laps or more. This appears to be more than 90% of most swim coaches' repertoire.

I swim to keep fit but noticed today that I took 10 seconds off my 100m intervals! I could picture this video in my mind as I swam today and totally understand how a dropped elbow gives less water resistance which in turn is less stroke power.

May I suggest that you begin a progression by using a pull buoy between your legs and a front mount swimmers snorkel (if you can tolerate that) for simplifying breathing. That way, you could practice the technique points the coach makes in these videos and focus on the correct stroke path, high elbow catch, and pulling with the strong muscles in the back (lats) and arms. I have seen a lot of swim videos and I really liked this one very much. I actually subscribed to your videos, I think the first time ever subscribed to any TH-cam videos. I really like the concept of using the palms of my hands during the catch. I tried it out today and I could really feel the difference using my palm and my full hand. I also like how you demonstrated the power of the catch in all three strokes, freestyle, breast , and butterfly. I would like to see a section on the recovery, hope you can either update this one or create one in the future.

I am an amateurish swimmer and this morning I tried to follow your tip and... my 3km time went from 1h6 to 1h2! The best thing is that now I see a very good margin of improvement, because that's was my first, timid, try to pull up my elbows! Thank you very much!
