Top Ten Weirdest Pokemon Stadium Models

- After all our years of covering Pokémon sprites in the main series games, we finally reached the last game to use sprites, which means we’re on to the 3D models. However, instead of jumping right to Gen 6, we thought we’d sidetrack to the first Pokémon game that let you battle with 3D models: Pokéemon Stadium. As with early Pokémon games, they were still figuring out how to design the Pokémon, so some of the designs had some interesting quirks. Sometimes they fit the Pokémon weirdly well, while other times they were almost reality warping with some of their actions. So let’s look for some of the weirder models that Pokémon Stadium brought us. Judgment Meter joins me for this list, too!

The Stadium models had so much personality and really made even made you feel something for the Pokemon you normally disliked. I really wish the modern game models were like them. I also really miss Steelix's chrome plated look from Stadium 2.
Pokemon Arceus and Snap did it in modern games too.
@@Topdoggie7 Yeah, Steelix is pretty chromed in Legends, I forgot about that. People bash on Legends but I really liked the personality of the Pokemon in that game.

Surprised Jynx is not on the list, the detail of her hair spinning around when attacked, and then being the only think left when she faints is pretty strange
I always loved that. Hilarious.
Not to mention how her nipples poke out when she blows a kiss on her idle stance

That defeat animation with the hair was also referenced in the GBA Pokemon Puzzle game. On it's defeat, it's defeat animation was literally the hair waving a red flag
When she uses Mega Kick, she jumps up and shoots some kind of bizarre blob out of the bottom of her dress! There is no body inside the dress/the weird blob _is_ her body!
One odd thing I never got past is how Gastly and Haunter are an order of magnitude larger than Gengar
Speaking of Gengar, I was reminded of it when the brought up Golbat in this video and it's tongue, as it also had a habit of using it during it's attack animations, and it was pretty hilarious if you ask me

Funnily enough haunter's actually bigger than gengar
Gastly is 4 feet tall and weighs 0.2 lbs, so this is pretty much the only 3D game that displays Gastly at the right size I think. Haunter is 5 feet tall and still weighs 0.2 lbs. Gengar is 4 foot 11 inches and weights 89.3 pounds, it lost an inch and gained some weight.
Eevee has a tuft of hair on its head! That's the greatest design ever! Also, I forgot how hard I went on that Wigglytuff imitation.

I think the point of Golbat's tongue was a reference to how actual vampire bats feed: the use their fangs to just barely break the skin, then lick the blood off the animal's body as it trickles out.
Also, Golbat CAN close its mouth, the game footage you used clearly shows the bottom fangs sticking out when Golbat's wings are folded up, and the mouth opening when it unfurls them.

Just a small piece of information. Snakes don't unhinge their jaws. Their lower jaw isn't fused and the muscles in the mouth allow it to move each section individually. This allows it to "walk" it's mouth around prey. Sounds terrifying, but it's quite interesting to watch.
I always liked Jinx's animations that really expanded on her lips and the way when she's defeated she leaves her wig behind

Holy crap. That Venusuar eye situation is very creepy.
I like the idea that Vileplume isn't being taken over by the flower, but is instead planting itself to regain nutrients, like a gen 1 version of the Ingrain move
When Venusaur's eyes go bloodshot, its normally red irises turn blue. Maybe that's not blood going *to* his eyes, but rather he's so focused on attacking that he's expelling the blood normally in his irises. Our vision can become blurry when adrenaline causes pressure on our eyes, maybe Venusaur's high power moves press the blood out and impair his vision until he's not on the offensive.
Poison type detail?
That doesn’t make any sense. How can Venusaur see if its irises are full of blood?

To talk pretty seriously, with all the struggles and depressions in life, whenever you make a Pokémon or yugioh video, it always cheers me up and brings me back to being 5 years old :)

The animation of Alakazam using DIG was pretty hilarious to watch. I like to think it uses it's psychic powers to spin around while using it's spoons to drill a tunnel! 😂
You should have mentioned Electrode at the very least. Its eyes pop out before fainting, which is hilarious.
My favorite sprite is Jinx, because it shows the "black" was just a shadow, which makes changing it to purple actually altering the entirely of the Pokemon itself by giving it a physical body where it normally didn't have one
That was esseentially number 11 since we were looking at that one. Leaving its hair behind is just as funny as Vileplume flower head behind left behind
Before I knew Jinx was ice/psychic type, this is essentially what I thought she was... like a haunted opera costume.

in gameboy puzzle league, her defeated sprite is also just the wig waving a white flag, there is nothing under the dress
It is technically a glitch since it requires a trade from generation 2, but Aerodactyl using earthquake is the funniest thing I can remember from Pokemon Stadium 1.
Golem using fly through metronome has me and my brother cracking up as kids
The fact that I love this game so much that I remember how all the models in this video moved is amazing lol.
I made a lot of my picks before even replaying any of the game since they were so ingrained in my memory lol
Always love how you do so many variations of these lists, some obvious and some less obvious but they're always great fun to watch
I miss how full of personality and life these animations were.

I kinda find it sad though that Brock just didn't offer the Ninetails to just be part of his team. I know he is specialiced in rock but still better than leaving it alone after all this time.

Honestly he has way more non-Rock Pokemon than he does Rock. And it's not just a traveling with Ash thing, because Misty's only non-Water Pokemon was her Togetic. Brock is just bad at being a type specialist akfjgbkdjfgb
I do noticed Golbat has the ability to close its mouth in a few milliseconds right before its wings got itself covered.
the alakazam animation isn't meant to show it's not hurt from the attack (alakazam line has absolutely pitiful defense), it's to show that it has no issue levitating itself because its psy powers are so advanced it requires little effort
The co-host interjections are weird and disjointed and just come across as annoying. Not a fan.

I still can get over the weird red veined eyes Venusaur emits whenever it attacks. Perhaps it takes a lot of stress for it? Anyway, thank you for a great list!

Shout out to jinx and electrode. Jinx has a faint animation like vileplume and electrode probably had the most crazy eyes that you ever seen almost unsettling.
Since were moving onto 3D models for the Ranking Sprites series, I recommend tackling the Pokemon XD, Pokemon X and Y, and Pokemon Legends Arceus models. These are the games that changed up the 3D models.
The original 386 of XD are the same in Battle Revolution. Sometimes even down to the shadows.
The old models were done by creatures inc which made the new models too. Stadium up to revolution kept porting up the models of older gen pokemon forward. This is part of the reason why I hated their excuse that they spent too much time making new models and there were too many pokemon, when they stated that the XY models in a past interview were future proof designed upto 4k so they can keep porting them forward into new generations. This means by the time swsh started dev they already had most of the pokemon models made and ready to be added to the game.
@@safehouse432 and they still had to work on the old Pokémon models when porting them to Switch by giving most Pokémon lot higher quality textures and giving some Pokémon actual lighting effects than just making them bright to look like they have lighting effects etc...
@@safehouse432 the models for Sword & Shield were just the wire frames, they needed to individually retexture the incoming mons to make sure when they dynamaxed that the textures didn't pixellate
Some of the XD models were updated for BR, including most of the Kanto/Johto Pokemon since those are imported to XD directly from Stadium with few edits. You can see evidence of this in how Kangaskhan, which went mostly unedited for the entire series, looks jarring and out of place in BR since it's a nearly unchanged N64 model in a Wii game. Meanwhile the other gen 1 models have had rough edges smoothed out or textures changed.
XD's gen 3 models went mostly unchanged IIRC, but gens 1 and 2 received significant updates.
@@safehouse432 I hear each new asset added to Sword and Shield takes over 40 hours to render, as a factor into why they had to Dexit. They even admitted that time crunch is a factor into the decline in game quality recently.

Thank you! We like to embody the feeling of classic TH-cam in videos since it's very nostalgic to us. While there's plenty of great quality content on the platform nowadays, an element that sometimes gets lost is the charm of a couple of people just talking about what they like with their natural humor. We like giving off that feel, only with better visual and audio quality from the late 2000 TH-cam. I personally think my mic sounds pretty standard for modern TH-cam, just being a Blue Microphone like most TH-camrs, but I know plenty of other channels have a pro setup too, so the audio quality may sound comparatively older. Anyway, thanks for watching!

except for the fact that golbat's mouth actually does close? it's only open when both wings are no longer wrapped around the body, not only can you tell when both wings are closed by the upward direction fangs that are from the bottom of his mouth, but when he's only covering himself with one wing you can clearly see not only his close mouthed body but the closed mouth line in the 3D model quite easily I'd say
"They start fighting Moses."

I like this video, it was a pretty fun watch. One thing I noticed though is that Golbats mouth does indeed close and open. You can see it for a split second at the beginning and end of his animations. Also when he wraps himself up the teeth are sticking upward, implying his mouth is closed.
It's funny how we were so engulfed in the tongue that we didn't even notice that. It would have given us even more material to work with.
I think they did such a good job with them honestly and many of the base models and animations were used through 2007 with Revolution. And the fact they had a mega kick animation for almost every monster was wild.
I always wanted to give Venusaur eye drops and I like the twitch from a fainted Vileplume. I remember there be different Pikachu animations depending if it came from yellow or not.
Look closer at the Golbat animation and you will see right before it closes it wings it coosed its mouth. Also the theet stucking out are the one in the bottom since they are pointed upwards
My personal favorite is any Pokemon with metronome using fly. Snorlax and onix are especially funny
Pokemon Stadium is one of my favorite childhood games I loved and it has my favorite line in all of gaming

8:58 Kangaskhan is one of the few (maybe the only) Pokemon models to go completely unedited through the entire Stadium series... Including Battle Revolution on the Wii. It's quite jarring in that game to be surrounded by all these new or updated Wii models then suddenly, N64 Kangaskhan.
Now I want to play Stadium with Judgment Meter!

If I remember correctly, when Jynx faints her body disappears and only her hair remains. Also, when Mr. Mime does a charging move like Tackle he positions his hair like bull horns.

Then electrode just explodes without the boom was always great haha
Electrode was one we were considering mainly for that fainting animation where its eyes bulge out of its head despite not having visible eyeballs normally

Also, I wouldnt say that magneton fits in this video as a weirdly animated pokemon, but as an interestingly animated pokemon that is very worthy of the spotlight

Jigglypuff's fainting animation is actually referenced in Smash Bros, as one of its taunts
At that time that animation didnt exist in the smash bros series (it came in Brawl), it is original in this game.

Machoke also has a great animation for getting up after being hit. He does kind of a "Come on, walk it off" motion where he hits himself in the head.

You should review Pokémon Stadium Zero's models. Pokémon like Starmie have animations that aren't used again (not even on the later Stadium games) and Nidoking looks horrendous!
That's a strong possibility for the future. I did end up doing Japanese Red and Green after some of the later games, so I'm always down to go back to the Japanese versions of the games

I miss Pokemon Stadium 2, glad it's finally coming to switch online, I always turned the commentator off though because when the Pokemon did a KO (Like a Horn Drill) his voice used to scare me as a ten year old haha. I always loved how when you'd import your own Pokemon from the gameboy they'd always have different shades of colour like they were unique.
i like how these animations are used i think still for some in Battle Revolution all the way on the Wii
