    This is the best overview of student vs professional saxophones. Problem with a pro horn is it is too expensive to take out to a lot of places, when most people have guitars costing a few hundred pounds each and you are going to carry something around that costs 4 grand. More of an investment maybe but also more of a worry if it gets stolen or damaged.

    I’m only looking to buy a new horn because my old one is falling apart and I’ve spent so much money having it repaired that I might as well have bought a new one.

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! This can happen for sure, sometimes it is worth the fixes if it is a solid horn. But if it doesn't stand up to the high quality instruments on the market it is sometimes best to purchase a new one for sure.

    I'll try to put this into words. This is all somewhat subjective to say the least. First between your two horns. The EX sounds very technical which to me means it does everything well. It has a sweetness about it and your ability really brings that aspect out of it. It is straight up a fantastic horn. Now to the Bundy 2. It kind of hangs out on the ragged edge which is not a bad thing. It has a different dynamic range about it that favors the bottom/mid range. That ragged edge gives it a jazzy sound to my ear and maybe to yours.
    Everyone is looking for "their" sound. But it's not only "their" sound they are looking for but also how does playing makes them feel. You will know it when it happens. I think that's why so many players search for that perfect mouth piece lig, horn setup.

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Richard, indeed! I agree spot on with your assessment of the horns, Bundy has more of that classic jazz sound with more in the mids for sure. And the feeling of how it plays is just as important if not more then the sound of the horn... If your not comfortable with playing your horn there is no way you will be comfortable with your tone.

    I have access to several altos, (a Keilworth 2007, a Selmer Aristocrat AS600 2006, an old Conn [idk when, we think from the mid-50's], and a Bundy I from 73/74), and the Bundy I sounds the best out of them all. The Conn is entry level, and almost identical to the Bundy (just the Mercedes low C guard, and the pearl rollers), and its my second favorite tone-wise, the Bundy might just be in better shape and they'd virtually be identical under ideal conditions. The ergonomics on the newer saxes are far better though--and the AS600 has the high F#. The Bundy I has the old pinky cluster design, and the II has some tone hole redesigns I guess; would be really interested to find a Bundy II in good condition to compare the I against. That Bundy sounds great in this vid, had more edge to my ear. If you want to upgrade, for sure upgrade the mouthpiece first, and then hone in on a preferred reed for it. Don't become obsessed with gear though--can pick someone's set-up whose tone you like and then practice to get (close to) where you want. Also get your horn serviced like the video suggests. Great advice. Also check around pawn shops for horns--can get them cheap and then (if needed) fixed up for less than a new horn, or even a ebay/craigslist one. Eg. the Selmer and Bundy both came from a pawn shop, haven't needed serviced and cost $330, and $189 respectively.

    Excellent review. I have a Bundy I and I was thinking to upgrade to a Allora Paris Pro... I like my sound nowadays (obviously I still look for my sound), but I am not sure if I should do the upgrade...

    • @KevinBene

      Yeah not totally familiar with Allora brand. The Allora pro looks to be in beginner price range. Not totally sure if it would be a big upgrade. The Bundy's are excellent horns.

    Unfortunately, I hear THAT much of a difference between a professional and a beginner horn. Notes are somehow all around in beginner sax, while the intonation control is easier on a pro sax. I always believe that quality of an instrument definitely matters.

    I’m just going to get started playing saxophone. What horn should I start off with?

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Really depends on how much you are willing to spend.. I always recommend reliable brands that are in good used condition. Selmer Bundy, Yamaha YAS 23, Jean Baptiste. If you can get your hands on one of these you will be good.

  • @jackcristofano7499

    i have a Bundy II as well, however it’s very old and breaks almost every other month or so. I’m a sophomore in high school and i’d like to think i’m pretty decent, and my family and I agree that it may be time for an upgrade. What are some models/brands you recommend?

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jack, thanks for the comment! Well if you plan to play any sort of classical music I recommend sticking with Yamaha or contemporary Selmer saxophones, that is just my opinion. If you have no interest in any classical playing other options like, Yanagisawa, Keilworth, Cannonball, P. Mauriat and Lupifaro are all good. Of course the best bang for your buck is the professional options, but most of these brands come with an intermediate model. Hopefully this helps!

    The reason I’m looking to upgrade from Selmer TS710 is because of the weight and the ergonomics and some leaks. One of the repair technicians fixed it a week ago and now seems to have some leaks in the lower registers again. Thoughts?

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very possible the repair technician did not fix it thoroughly enough. It happens to me occasionally. It isn't a great idea to buy a new horn because of leaks in your old horn, because a good technician can clear that up. Weight and ergonomics could be a reason, although the only ergonomics in a Selmer TS710, if I am correct, won't be extremely different from any new contemporary horn. Don't get me wrong there are definite differences between horn ergonomics. But usually we just get used to the horn with time. The only time I would get a new horn for ergonomics would be if I was playing on a real vintage horn like a Conn, Martin, Buescher as the key work is vastly different. Usually higher level horns are heavier, usually made with more brass and better material yields a more solid heavier horn.

    • @abhimalavalli
      @abhimalavalli 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appreciate your response Kevin, I’m also finding I have to press the keys harder to seal properly, a gentle press doesn’t seem to be working out well, does it indicate towards needing new pads in your experience?

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abhimalavalli it is possible the pads have swollen yes, so you would need replacements. But it could be many things, pad cup may not be even, the actual Key may be bent or not be even, probably other things as well. No way to really tell unless a repair tech looks at it.

    i wanna ask ,if i want to upgrade my saxophone from student class and my budget is under 1.350 dollar what ur recomendation? thank u

    • @KevinBene
      @KevinBene  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a really good question. An upgrade (intermediate) horn for $1,350 or less is tuff to come by these day by more of the reputable brands. It depends what music you plan to play. Buying used may not be a bad idea, you just want to make sure to play it and inspect it before you buy it.. If your looking for an all around good horn for the price the Yamaha 475 or 480 horns are solid, but you probably will need to find it used. P. Mauriat makes a very affordable intermediate horn as well, they are more for jazz players though. Selmer, Yanagisawa also make great intermediate horns that are good for all around playing but you will most likely need to find them used for your budget. I did a quick search and this popped up. consordini.com/best-alto-saxophone/, pretty good source. Just make sure you play text a horn before you buy it!!
