No country is perfect. You have good and really bad places in all countries just like where I live here in the UK. Things are really falling apart here...just don't recognise this country I've called home now for 23 years...it gotten from worse to worse over the last 13 years it's so sad.
Peace of mind, safety, security and quality of life matter most in my opinion.
      Happy for you.

We moved to Ireland from South Africa in February 2020, with our teenage son. It was the best decision ever. He often thank us for that, because he has opportunities that he wouldn't have there. We miss the sun and the heat, but Ireland is beautiful and the people have made us feel so welcome. We are also so grateful for being safe.

Your story will resonate with most Irish people because so many of us have relatives who had to leave Ireland in the past in order to try and make better lives for themselves-known as ‘the Diaspora’. Thankfully that day is gone-although some people still choose to do so-but we can empathise with people who come here now. I have relatives in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA and the UK and that’s typical of most of us. Welcome to the Irish weather! Cycling or walking home in the lashings of rain and gales of wind was par for the course during my schooldays-still is work/shopping wise as a matter of fact as I’ve never had a car. Well done on what you’ve achieved so far and no doubt there’s a lot more to come in the future. You should be eligible for citizenship in a year or so if you choose to go that route-all doors across the EU open up and because of the Common Travel Area between Ireland and the UK, that jurisdiction would also be accessible for jobs, living etc. I really enjoyed hearing your story.

One of my good friends, Capetonian, went there too. Best move he ever made. Don`t worry about the shoddy weather: you`re a hop, skip and jump from Spain, Portugal , Greece, etc. The absence of fear is difficult to explain to those who haven`t experienced it!

First of all, I have to comment on how amazing your intro is. Wow, you really seem to be very creative/artistic, I could never produce such elegant videography but, I can appreciate it.
I'll be honest, I was afraid that you were going to say that you didn't like Ireland and that you thought it was a mistake, phew..... It was a lovely honest and insightful video. There are two things that I really don't like about Ireland, 1 - The Weather and long winters. 2 - The high cost of living. However, I think you have made an excellent choice with respect to your children's future. The education system and career opportunities here are top notch and this will continue for the foreseeable future. Hence the high cost of living but we are now a rich first world economy. And your children will be well balanced, grounded, kind and have a good sense of humour ! Because of you guys but also because in general we are like that here ;-)
Well done to you and your husband for being so brave to make these sacrifices for your children. I've met a few South Africans who have done something very similar to what you guys have done. You were so vulnerable with such little financial backing, but you guys are so so rich in talent and attitude. In my opinion, we are very fortunate that you choose Ireland to re-locate to.
Now can you please let us win the Rugby World Cup ?

That was the best move you could have made for your children. We did the same thing we left SA in 2008 and moved to New Zealand. We ( me, wife and 2 daughters) just had our clothes and a bit of money with us. I had to find a job and find one in the form of farming. This was a big challenge as I had no farming experience, luckily the farmer I worked for was a very patient man and he learned me everything about farming. The great thing about farming was the free housing. I later studied through my employer towards an agricultural diploma and never looked back. We are now 15 years in this country and I didn’t go back to South Africa yet. I will never go back to SA again New Zealand is for us home now and the weather is actually pleasant, never too hot and never too cold. The scenery is spectacular and we think we stay in the most beautiful country on earth. I am so happy for you and your family that it did work out for you and at the end of the day it is the best decision that you could have made for your children. Wish you and your family just the best. Hope you still support the Bokke.

I was born in England and moved to Ireland with my mum and dad and my siblings where I would have spent my formative years in school etc, then my dad and mum who were both Irish decided to return back to Ireland which was the best decision for us because where we lived was starting to get dangerous with breaking etc and we've never looked back.

Your story really hits home for me, it's a lot like my own. I'm glad to hear your family made it through together. My own family didn't stay together, and it really hurt. But would I go through it all again? Definitely. It was tough, but my kids got better chances in life and they've done really well for themselves. I'm super proud of them. As for me, I guess I'm pretty happy with how things turned out. I came to the UK in 2001 with only £230 in my pocket, landed at Heathrow, and had to choose which way to go. And I wasn't born a British citizen; I had to work hard and go through a lot to become one.

I am Irish living in South Africa. Just Wish i could return to Ireland but at 58 too old to start over and i dont have any friends or family in Ireland. SA is a horrible stressful place to live. i say this mainly because of the crime we have experienced over the last 10 years, the most recent incident being a family member who was hijacked and abducted. 60 murders a day.

Born and raised in SA and won't SA trade SA for any country hence its challenge with crime which the state its doing its best to overcome, every country has got its challenges like Ireland being an expensive to make ends meat, a fact is SA is a beautiful country and some Provinces in SA are very peaceful, such as Limpopo, Free state, North West and Northern Cape, it's not as bad as its projected, some of us are living way good life compared to some in Europe.

Thank you for posting this, it is so inspiring as I and my Fiancé met each other 14 years ago when we were 19 he had growing up in Chicago and I had grown up in Ontario Canada. We both grew up feeling like we were growing up without a culture and wondered what our ancestors did how they lived off the land and then sometime in high school, both of us had a similar experience of getting into wicca paganism and yet even though I was going to Catholic school and I was living in an Irish settlement community, we really felt like most of the people around us had become atheistic, and we really wanted that connection with the land as I did more research I discovered that what they called paganism and wicca was actually just a sorry Excuse, for the traditional earth connected animism of my Irish ancestors, and I turned towards that instead.. But it took me all through Most of my 20s for me to realize and start to really connect to those roots.. My partner also has been doing the same we realized then there was such a rich culture and Ireland, and we learned about the history with the potato bite and attempt to genocide on our people. We learned about the erasure of the language and the laws against speaking it, and about the Magdalene houses and about the laws of Irish people not being able to do business in the 1700s when our ancestors immigrated on the coffin ships. It started to make a lot of sense as we both had found ourselves in a lot of deep trauma, and we’re doing a lot of research in terms of somatic experiencing.. We felt really hopeless for a long time We had both been bullied in school for fair skin and me for my freckles and kicked for for having redhair.. It’s a devastated me, growing up with half siblings that basically died their hair as soon as their parents allowed them to make their own decisions because they were shamed of who they were. We looked into the history and realized that there was a big discrimination in the past people that looked like us. And we really felt like we weren’t belonging here as I had first tried to decolonize myself when I found out about colonization in high school, and started to learn about indigenous Canadian Teachings, because they were starting to promote these teachings, even though I had grown up in Canada, and had been raised on the stories of the Dreamcatcher, and had always had one all my life above my bed and We often participated in collecting maple syrup. I realized that very quickly through trying to get a more earth based indigenous culture was not allowed Because it was just appropriation.. This had felt strange to me, and was quite upsetting in my teens, especially as I had moved 28 times while growing up, and had never really felt a sense of belonging or acceptance, and because I was the only spiritual person really in my family, and in my peer group in all of the schools I went to I felt quite ostracized, especially with the bullying.. My partner on the other hand growing up a suburb of Chicago, and have been extremely bullied thrown in dumpsters, told he was a piece of trash because of his skin color. Being too fair people often told him he looked sickly and We were both told often that we needed to get some sun.. I attempted this in my teens, going to tanning beds, and trying to expose myself to the sun, but I would just burn.. And when I gave up on that men would tell me, my legs were too white.. just in passing.. like they had any right to change my body.. I was often teased for looking too young, because as a traditional, Irish body type I am only 5 feet.. So people would often tease me, and say that I was just a small child still.. Until I was 28 years old people thought I was between 12 and 15 years old.. At age 32 people often confuse me as a teenager before speaking to me, Regardless of the clothing that I wear, that is quite classic and composed and mature.. So I heard that historically the Irish are a small statured people.. and were often seen as sing songy and almost childlike well into adulthood.. anyway, It’s been a really tough go, and We’ve really been struggling in recent years with all of the racial tensions and the floods of Young male refugees from the middle east and Africa Over the last 5 to 10 years.. Especially because there have been great advances in the last 20 years about non-smoking in public places and public parks and non-drinking in public places, but these rules seem to continue to be broken By these large groups of young men who can’t understand and often smell so badly on public transit, I have felt very uncomfortable, travelling alone, especially with my autism I feel very sensitive to the loudness of their voices, and the strong smells of perfumes and colognes and body odour.. I’ve really felt put out and like I’ve lost the sense of belonging just in the world in general, even though I didn’t really have a connection to ancestors.. It has been really tough, and I feel like some sort of invisible person that has always had to conform or fly under the radar and be quiet and silent to not be picked on and now it feels even more stressful. We have been seeking for a place we could live that would be away from all of the craziness intention, and all of the loudness of the cities With loud heavy metal and wrap music blaring all hours of the night loud motors, rumbling, and disturbing sleep and loud Yelling and talking on the streets At night when you try to sleep with a breeze of a window open.. Watching your video really inspired me and I think Ireland seems like such a peaceful place and a welcoming place for people who Originated there Who, like our ancestors never wanted to leave.. I look forward to looking into relocating from all the craziness of the big cities, connecting with the roots and growing a humble garden, and maybe a small family..

Thank you for sharing that, very interesting. I did the same but in the opposite direction 40 years ago, arrived here in SA with my hi-fi and record collection, a suit case of clothes and very little else other than a determination to succeed. I've had a good life here but I've worked hard for everything I have, no windfalls or inheritances, SA has been good to me, however there's a downside too, you get tired of the burglaries, you get tired of getting robbed and fearing for your safety and you get tired of sitting around without electricity and, now I'm retired I'd really like to pack up and go back. However, it just isn't possible now, the financial gap has become too great, my savings are worthless, I could not afford to live there, my immediate family there are all deceased and over the years I have slowly lost contact with everybody I knew, so it is a frightfully out of reach proposition to think of doing it now, especially as I'm past employment age. So, well done you for doing what you did, you will definitely feel homesick from time to time but rest assured, the prospects are infinitely brighter where you are now and with time it becomes easier, and you've got your whole life ahead of you to build on what you have without fear of one day losing it and enjoy life in relative safety. Thank you for the video and my best wishes to all of you.

The Common Travel Area (CTA) between UK and Ireland was there long long before the Good Friday Agreement and has nothing to do with it really. Good Friday Agreement is more about the right of those in the north to declare either national identity. I think the CTA was set up at the foundation of the state. Any British person can enter Ireland and live there and vice versa.

South Africa is the most beautiful country in the world, some of the friendliest people , the weather is warm and allows for family outings , however the crime statistics do not lie and if they do, they are lessening the gravity, no jobs and even if one is the best candidate, affirmative action is in favour of the majority, our municipalities are neglected and incompetence is rewarded.
Those who left did so with a heavy heart, they will pine for their homeland for the rest of their lives. People leave for the security of their loved ones, no one wants to live in fear. Good luck to your little family, best wishes .

🤔Errr... No and No!☺ That's wishful thinking.. The feeling of elation and relief as the plane took off and we watched Table Mountain disappear into the darkness of the setting sun😉
I'm afraid SA has lost these highly qualified people for good, and this is Irelands gain. Anyone that returns has either not planned their move properly, expected Ireland to be like SA, or is suffering from a severe case of amnesia.. but they'll get their memory back as soon as the plane lands in JHB or CT.🙃
Ireland is a different beautiful country and people, has different things if you're prepared to get out there and look. It also has their problems like any country.. but for comparison as a good guess it's like ratios of 90:10 to 10:90 in Irelands favour.😇

Now may be seriously tough but in 10 years, when you look back and your kids have a future and you hopefully settled financially, you won’t be sorry. Keep the important thing in focus while you walk this difficult road. We all hope for a fix in SA but lets be honest, means rebuilding infrastructure, getting investor back, too many years to devote, to a majority that will not walk the course. I did not arrive with such limited resources and still the road has been rough, just stay the course. Best of luck.
